Cricket was reasonably popular in the US for a while. George Washington was once reported as taking part in a game.

Not any more, though - only about 30,000 people there watch or play it regularly. Many would probably be Commonwealth expatriates.

I think golf is extremely boring to watch but I like Sid Meier's SimGolf, mini-golf, put-put, and driving ranges. I cannot tell you if I like to play the true game of golf because I have never played it. Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball are the only games that I watch live at stadiums. The problem is that Seattle does not have the Super Sonics any more. I loved this week's America's Got Talent.

Where did the Sonics go? I didn't know about that because I don't pay a lick of attention to basketball. You should have seen me last summer in LA trying to find a place that had the Stanley Cup Finals on while the Lakers were in the NBA Finals. I got a few weird looks... and probably some death threats too.

Perfection? Hardly. A theorietical perfect score in golf (18) is so absurd an achievement that I can't imagine anyone has ever come anywhere near it. But your point is taken: it's not a game that anyone can just go and play, it takes a lot of skill to be anything other than abysmal at it. Bowling is kinda the same way. As would be any game where you're not directly playing against an opponent, but rather simply trying to manipulate things towards a theoretical optimum. At a typical team sport, it doesn't matter so much if you suck if your opponent also sucks.

But the problem I have with golf has nothing to do with any of that. The problem I have with golf is that there's simply no action. Stand there, aim, swing club, go sit back down in the golf cart. Repeat ad nauseum. It's no fun to watch.

What's interesting is that soccer has exactly the opposite problem, but to exactly the same effect. The action pretty much never stops, which is actually just as monotonous to watch as action that pretty much never starts.

Both are an imbalanced situation - for something to be fun to watch, you need action, but you also need periods of relative inaction to contrast it with, otherwise the action just becomes normal and mundane.

A perfect score in golf is generally regarded as somewhere around 54, which is 18 shots under par on the standard par-72 course. I would also like to point out that many golfers don't use carts - I personally much prefer to walk.

I happen to like football/soccer more than I like most other sports, with the possible exception of cricket. I'm just that kind of person.

I have baseball (99% of my collection), football (most of the remaining 1%), basketball, hockey, movie/comic, and even professional wrestling cards, but no soccer cards. This is a deficiency!

Cricket is nothing if not a game of statistics. How else would commentators keep us entertained for up to five days straight? Well, aside from talking about things not at all related to the sport - something they do with astounding frequency, especially on radio. And yes, cricket and football (soccer) trading cards do exist. I don't own any, but they're out there.

Well, to get an idea, we may be able to compare to other sports that involve a lot of running around trying to score goals.

Stats on the back of 1990-91 Fleer Basketball cards: G, FG%, FT%, REB, AST, BLK, PTS, AVG

I take that as Games, Field Goal Percentage, Free Throw Percentage, Rebounds, Assists, Blocks, Points Scored, and... and Average of sort. Looks like average number of points scored per game.

Stats on the back of 1996-97 Topps Hockey cards (position players): GP, G, A, PTS, PIM.

Hmm... Games Played, Goals, Assists, Points... no idea what the last one might be.

Games Played, Minutes Played, Goal Attempts, Shutouts, and... I guess average number of goals allowed per game.

There is noticably less stuff there as compared to baseball cards. To wit...
