7836. I'm very strict about making my homework, well, most of it. Partly because of some teachers, and others because it's good preparation for the tests. Only homework I hardly do is physics, because the teachers doesn't quite care, and I get a 10 regardless of my effort.

7840. @Philadelphia, does that include big assignments, like essays?

@cacks: Well, it's physics, so it can't be that bad. How many exercises are in the booklet?

Sure, here you go:

(a) Let k be a natural number, and r a real number with |r| < 1.

Prove (by induction on k) that for any polynomial P of degree k there

is a polynomial Q of degree k with Q(n + 1)rn+1 - Q(n)rn = P(n)rn

[Hint: Consider dierences of successive terms for nkrn, and use the

inductive hypothesis].

(b) Find the sum from n=1 to infinity of the series n22-n.

Note - part (b) was originally written in sigma notation, but it didn't copy over properly.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I do not like work, and would much rather be doing something else. I do, however, like to do well.

I'm studying in multiple fields right now - you can only take one physics course per semester as a first year student. My other three courses are maths, chemistry, and computing for scientists.

7860. woo I haz a multiple of 10 \22.gif/

I actually love math, and good luck with your test astro, as for that maths question I'll just say o.O

I have a maths problem of my own actually:

sqrt(1/2) + sqrt(1/4) + sqrt(1/8) = ?

I've tried a lot of methods but can't figure it out... 7 weeks of sitting in front of ST chat hasn't helped me out much either/

Problem from Cacks:

sqrt(1/2) + sqrt(1/4) + sqrt(1/8) = ?quote>

Remember: sqrt(1/2) = 1/sqrt(2), and also 4 = 2 * 2 and 8 = 2 * 2 * 2

Now, go on from there.
