*puts on prediction hat*

I predict we shall reach 10,000 posts in... the future!

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

The posting rates in this thread are anything but regular and do not seem to be predictable. So, I hesitate to try and extrapolate.

But, if you're going to pin me down about it, I'll say... mid-November-ish.

Yeah, let's try to shorten it.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Agreed. It took me 5 hours just to get my learner's permit. I can imagine how long it's going to take to get my provisional license.

We don't do the "provisional license" thing in Connecticut, although the rules have tightened a bit. When I got my license, as an adult all you had to do was walk up and schedule a test and provide proof of address, etc. Now, you're not required to take the full driver's ed that teens do, but you do need to take an 8 hour course about drugs and alcohol. Which, according to my sister, was little more than being shown movies about drinking and drugs, a couple of which she had already seen.

Prior to ~2005, there were no restrictions on teen driving. Now, the restrictions are so ridiculous that it's not worth the bother to get your license as a minor.

Here you have a drug and Alcohol class in school. We also had a Ex drug addict come in and speak. You also get a certificate saying you passed the class.

When I first took my road test, I don't recall it being anywhere near such a hassle as you guys describe. I did, however, fail it the first time around. Why? I couldn't remember how to turn on the high beams. I had to wait 2 weeks before I took it again. And I was almost 17 by the time I got my license. I could have got it at 16, but days after I turned 16, I left the country for over 2 months, and then was told by my parents to take a safety course first, which lowered my insurance rates. Then when I finished the class I got grounded for the second quarter of the school year because of bad grades in the first. Back then it seemed to take for-freakin'-ever.

Personally I think everyone should have to re-take some sort of test every ten years or so. There are far too many drivers on the road whom I don't think meet the qualifications for being considered a good driver.

2 weeks? I had to wait six months after failing the test the first time before I could take it again. That wasn't due to any law, though (in CT, it's 30 days after the first failure and 60 days after subsequent failures), it was because the local DMV was absolutely swamped and that's how far ahead they were already booked.

As for retaking the test every so often... I personally am quite glad I don't have to. I have anxiety issues. I get very nervous when I'm being observed and when I'm nervous I suck at whatever I try to do. I drive a lot better than the way I performed on the test would suggest. I was only able to pass the it in the first place by taking Xanax beforehand.
