Then how do you explain Megaman 9? It was made with NES-grade 8-bit graphics and it actually sold quite well. So well, in fact, that Capcom then made Megaman 10 the same way.

Bingo!

Two other key points:

1) A lot of old-school gamers complain that modern games are too easy. Megaman 9 was hailed as being difficult like an old-school game. Although, if you ask me, it isn't that difficult once you've played through it. And some of the NES Megaman games were pretty easy.

2) Thanks to the low-fi-ness, the game was cheap to produce, and sold for only $10US.

But SC4 is a seven year old game. It having a "bargain bin" price is to be expected. MM9 was $10US when it was brand new.

Compare that to what SC4 was selling for in 2003. It was... I forget, acutally. $30? $50? One of those two, probably. Also consider that that wouldn't include Rush Hour, which was then another $20. Minus a theoretical rebate which nobody ever got.

The price of time-specific items tends to go down as they stop being new and interesting, but then up again as they become old enough to be collector's items and supply dwindles.

If you wanted to buy an NES in 1995 or so, you probably could have easily found one for real cheap. Now they're hard to come by and will set you back at least a grand unless you manage to find someone selling one at a yard sale that thinks it's just another one of their son's old toys and has no idea what it's worth (my cousin snagged an SNES and several games for it for 25 bucks this way).
