Ah, licence tests. For my learner licence I just walked in to the office, took a ticket, waited for my number to be called and took the test. After passing, I got my height measured, my picture taken, and my learner licence. The whole process couldn't have taken more than half an hour.

I'm not sure how long you have to wait between tests for a provisional or open licence, though.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Well, you don't live in a city where your nearest DMV office is near a mall and major subway station/bus hub. Or do you?

Hmmm, for my learner's permit (had it for a month and a half or so) I was given a test in school, then a card with my score, then I had to go get a vision test (I almost failed it, got glasses now 26.gif) and I can drive, but restrictedly though, well, I guess I am another driver that is doomed to destroy the world in the eyes of NJ's goverment.

Anyway, I am trying to learn C++ (apparently the book says in 24hours, but stupid ms wouldn't compile my .cpp so the first hour was more like 3)

No. The nearest DMV is near two malls and a major train station/bus hub, as well as an interchange between two highways.

They don't actually measure your height here. What you put on the form is what they put on your license. If you don't know, you guesstimate. My license says I'm 5'11" ...well, turns out I'm more like 6'0". Oh well, close enough. I suppose I could have them change it when I renew my license next year.

I've had my learner's permit for over 2 years now, and still haven't done the required 100 hours of driving to be able to take the provisional licence test.

lol, the american system is dam difficult

Here in Austria you only have to frequent the theoretical course (20hrs.), a small first aid course (1 day), take at least 8x2 hrs. practical course(driveing), pass the theoretical test (if you fail you can try it again as soon as the examiner is at your driving scool again (2-15 days)) and after the theoretical the practical test (if you fail it's the same procedur like aboth). If you pass the theoretical test you get handed out a temporary license by the examinator before leaving the car. Than they send you your fix license within 8 -10 workdays (credit card size)

And last you have to take a driveing safety training (some months after the practical exam)

(driveing safety training < that was the est way to translate it, it's a training where you learn how to handle your car in difficult situartions)

The license front site looks like this, back side like this (notice: that's just the austrian standard example, not mine9.gif)

^^How does the american license look like?

Depends on the state. All 50 have their own different design, along with their own different set of rules on how to get one. My driver's license isn't an "American" driver's license (there is no such thing), it's a State of Connecticut driver's license.

Likewise in Australia. The issuing of licences is a state government matter, not a federal one.

Theese are the things that work better in Austria (maybe because it isn't soo big)

But I think it works in germany in almost the same way... At least the differences between the driving licenses is just a white D instead of a white A in he top left corner. same for other EU states as well.
