Good Points?

Hi!

Yesterday was the first time I really looked into CitiesXL, and I was really exited, until today. Maybe I'm just a technophobe, but this demo isnt installing, so I can't sample the game for myself, and everyone on this forum seems to be complaining.

Please could you add a few good points about the game?

Also I have a few questions:

 - Are there airports?

 - How many different road types are there?

 - How long did the demo take to install?

 - Will I be able to make a decent city without subscription to the World thingy?

Thanks very much! :-)

Also I have a few questions:

- Are there airports?

not in the demo no but no doubt there will be in the full release.

Don't forget.

The demo only holds 10% of the buildings compared to the full release+ no doubt mods and downloadable content.

- How many different road types are there?5 roads(not including the bridges, will be more in the full version maybe?

- How long did the demo take to install?

About 4 mins maybe a bit more.

- Will I be able to make a decent city without subscription to the World thingy?

In single player yes, but without subscribing, you lose alot of what they plan to add for the subscribers.

So that's not good, i hope they change this but can see why they are doing it.

Hopefully they will back track on this?

There will be no mods dealing with gameplay and only custom content for online subscribtion and even that will be very limited sorry to dissapoint you guys as it currently stands. There will also be no mass transit for singleplayer so that will probably include airports. Also there will be no region play without the planet offer which is minimum5.50 a month. The planet offer does not add much in bonus content but rather content they took away from singeplayer. So will you be able to build a decent city? That depends on your definition of decent if you go by the same definition of decent that a majority of people on simtropolis go by, then no without the planet offer, no. Also please reas thesny threads on these topics before making a new one as most of your questions have been answered before there.

I saw airports but they must have been in online mode because airports are probably another city-link type of thing (and maybe a demand thing). I could have sworn that buses were going to be added soon after release and will be available for offline, or am I mistaken?

Yeah they said you will get busses for offline play....that's about it.

No offline region play. No offline mass transit. No offline custom content. My smile is turning into a frown when it comes to CXL. Perhaps an expansion pack will rectify these things down the road. But it's a sad situation when an expansion pack is needed to save a game.

- I believe there are airports, but not in the demo

- I saw highways, large avenues, small avenues, small roads, and farm roads (pretty cool), anything else I believe you will have to pay a monthly subscription for

- Only took 15-20 minutes to install the demo, it was easy.  Downloading took a while though, it's about a gig

- You can make an alright city, but all the goodies are going to be part of the subscription.  Want mass-transit?  Pay up!  I hope they fix the "all zones are the same size" issue, but if it's fixed it sounds like you'll have to pay up for that as well.

Is it worth buying?

At this point, I would say hold off.  Wait for them to fix the stuff and wait for the price to come down.  If you wait six months you can hopefully get a cheaper game with many bug fixes.  Although, you'll still have to subscribe to get a lot of the updates.

I think the Limited Edition will print only so many copies (though the online is unLimited) so I am going to pre-order it today for all the goodies (including the nice poster and cards).

Off topic: I wonder if someone will make Cities XL playing cards (standard 52 or trading cards, not like a card game).

Their also offering an Unlimited Version that costs more but comes with a lifetime (as long as their servers are around) connection to Planet Offer. BUT, here's the dig, it's only available in Germany through amazon.de. I asked why but never got an answer from MC why only Germany? Sounds a little country discriminating going on here! But, that's their call.

I wouldn't doubt after world wide release and a low subscriber base that they change their mind! Time will tell!

I won't buy either way but will wait for the end of Beta before I say why.

Planet Europa in the demo :

  • nearly 5000 cities built
  • less than 30 online players at the same time on a friday evening
Am I the only one to think something bad will happen to MC in the future?

Europa is only for Europe. My first account was on Caliban; my second was on Prospero. How many people total visited on that Friday? I do not believe in Lifetime OR Unlimited Edition, I think Amazon.de is WRONG!

Well your free to beleive whatever you want. But directly from MC in the beta:

 Mathew wrote:
Lifetime Edition is not a fiction, but it is a specific offer only available on Amazon.de (Germany). It includes the same content as the Limited Edition but with a lifetime subscription to Planet Offer. AND:

Hi everyone,

I had confirmation that the Lifetime Edition is part of a very specific deal with amazon.de and available in limited numbers only.

So, to answer the question: there are currently no plans to have a similar offer elsewhere.

I feel so humbled now that I have heard it from the horse's mouth.

Take it easy guys. Wait a few months, I think just to January 2010, Monte Cristo will see their fail with a greedy planet offer and will give all of the planet offer extra stuff to the limited edition including lifetime planet subscribtion, and that will be the only selling edition at reasonable price, obviously. They might also charge a few $$ for the planet offer multiplayer experience and that might work if they aren't to greedy, but much wiser it would be to give it all in the limited edition and upkeep the servers for online playing just to keep the game selling.

Probably they will still charge extra money for any additional stuff they create later.

They will not earn so much money as they wanted to drain out from our wallets, but this way the project and the company will be saved.

MC will realize that graphics aren't everything and once they see that less than fifteen people a night on thier little "Money sucker" planet offer45.gif, they will really rethink thier plans. I agree with chavez. Wait awhile.

Thats exactly what i want them to see - but looking at Monte Cristo's history you'll realize that they don't make the best business decisions.

couldn't have said it better myself than half the people in this thread. playing the demo and reading about how the game will play out on release, it would be foolish to invest in something that may go either way. a few months from now, you will know whether or not to buy this game or stay far, far away from it.

Is it worth buying?

It depends on your expectations for $50.  I would not pay $50 if I was determined to play offline only - I have very low expectations for single player offline.  I think it's only worth buying if you're willing to play online.  The single player version is more like a demo than a game.  However, I think the single player mode will be enough of a teaser to convince you to pay to play.
