^^^Fireworks off the ice preceded fireworks on the ice on Day 3 of the Simtropolis Hockey League.

Cortezlynn City hosted the June Isle Sharks at the new Sierra Simms Arena in tonight's featured game.

Fans were treated to a very physical game. Both teams came in with the drive to win, but some players took it too far. This was a penalty-heavy game; in fact, much of the first period was spent with one team or the other on power plays, or in four-on-four hockey, as four minor penalties were called in the first 10 minutes, plus a fighting major each for Cortezlynn City's Therien and June Isle's Souray. Even with the power plays, neither team was able to score in the first period.

 

^^^Therien (COR) and Souray (JUN) let fly in an attempt to gain momentum. Souray won this one.

 

Three more penalties produced power plays in the second period. Yet still there was no score and the teams entered the third period 0-0.

 

Each team's coach must have realized they'd been dodging bullets with the penalties. The teams came back in the third and played much cleaner hockey. Shortly into the third, June Isle was able to set up a textbook play, with Elias feeding Kasparaitis from behind the net. 1-0 Sharks.

^^^Another fight, this time Semenov (JUN) and Guerin (COR). June Isle won this one, but each earned a 5 minute major.

 

June Isle was able to carry that score into the final minutes. In a last ditch attempt to even the game up, the 86'ers pulled their goalie in the last minute of play to give themselves an extra man on offense. It's a risky call that didn't pay off this time; the 86'ers were unable to put one in the net, and the Sharks put an empty-net goal in at 19:18 to make the final score 2-0.

 

^^^Cortezlynn City fans got a rough-and-tumble game, but not the outcome they wanted.

 

^^^First star Biron earns grudging respect from Cortezlynn City fans.

 

A good game, but with so many power play opportunities and no power play goals scored, both teams are going to need to look at their special teams. They can't afford to waste such prime opportunities.

I'm working on the standings right now. I'll probably start adding it to the end of each Game Day update, so the current standings would always be on the last update in the thread.

Everybody, feel free to use whatever I post in your City Journals or however you want. However, it's probably a good idea to put them up on your own imageshack account, or wherever you want to put them, because I will probably periodically go through the thread to clear some stuff out (such as the Next up matchup logos after they are no longer the next ones. The purpose is to reduce the clutter in the thread and my Imageshack account a bit, and to reduce load times. Most important images should stay just where they are though.

^^^The SHL has spent tens of thousands of simoleons on fireworks alone for the amazing shows put on for each home opener. There will be two more days of such shows before everyone's had their home opener.

 

 

Featured game:

 

 

The June Isle Sharks hosted the Dynasty Sabre-Toothed Tigers at the Sim Bank Shark Pen tonight. These early games are important as teams seek to set the tone for the season, and both these squads showed up to win.

 

Play was rapid and skilled during the first period, but neither team could gain a clear advantage. At first intermission, neither team had anything to show for 20 minutes on the ice.

 

The second period started off in much the same manner until Dynasty's Dahlen found Grier in front of the Sharks' net. A quick wrist shot and the Tigers were up 1-0.

 

^^^ Dynasty takes an early lead.

 

That score held through the second period and the teams went into second intermission to plan their strategies.

 

^^^The Sharks head to intermission down 1-0.

 

The third period prove to be where the action was in this game.

 

Dynasty looked to pull away and scored early, with Dupuis finding the net just 1:44 into the third period.

 

^^^Dynasty goes up 2-0 for a comfortable lead early in the third.

 

The goal appeared to suck the energy from hometown crowd and team alike, and June Isle was unable to make anything happen for them offensively.

 

^^^Dynasty's Hatcher got the worse end of this mismatch.

 

Suddenly, in the last ten minutes of the game, June Isle seemed to hit their stride offensively. First, at 13:05, Stillman turned a pass from Vascek into a breath of new life for the Sharks. The energy had changed somehow, with the fans and Sharks players suddenly feeling they still had a chance.

 

^^^June Isle brings the game back within one goal.

 

Five minutes later, Lidstrom found the net again for the Sharks, and suddenly it seemed the game, once lost for June Isle, would be going to overtime.

 

But that was not to be.  Just one minute later, the Sharks again racked one up, shooting one past Dynasty's goalie at 19:27.

 

^^^The remaining crowd - some had left, thinking the game lost - went berserk after this go-ahead goal in the final minute of play.

 

By this time, the once-quiet fans were overjoyed, and the Dynasty defense was a shambles. The Sharks managed to fit one more goal in at 19:37 to make the score 4-2 in this amazing comeback.

 

^^^June Isle's Biron, expecting a few short minutes before to go back to the locker room with a loss, celebrates the Sharks' come-from-behind victory. Dynasty's defense will be answering the tough questions instead.

The SHL can provide the fireworks outside, but the home teams still have to work to make it happen inside, and Emporia couldn't make it happen tonight.

The less said about this game the better. While plenty of offensive players got to rack up goals and assists, the defense was missing in action on both sides of the ice. Those defensive players present seemed to spend most of their time in the penalty box, watching their teams feebly attempt to hold off power-play onslaughts. Rumor has it that this was originally to be the featured game of the day, but the commissioner was so disgusted with the play that he chose another game. He had no comment tonight.

FIRST GAME'S A LOSS, BUT FUN ANYWAY!
SIMMS ARENA, SECTION B
CORTEZLYNN

The young but strong nation of Simtropolis now has thier own hockey league, and a young but strong city, Cortezlynn, had thier taste of ice sports. Unluckily, the taste was bittersweet.

Cortezlynn City had thier first match against June Isle last week at the Sierra Simms Arena in a north-central community of Luvenia Palace.

Sportswise, some fans were disappointed because the city's first game was a loss, but everyone were happy to see hockey, many of them watching it live for the first time.

Transit-wise, many residents were lost, dazed, and confused when they found out on short notice that the team moved to the new Sierra Simms Arena uptown. Almost all of the residents who bought tickets arrived at the old Sierra Park Arena. To compinsate for this, the Transit Authority conducted free bus rides and reduced train rides from 8th Street and Union Stations to the Fort Totten station, the closet station to the new arena.

After the game, streets, trains, and buses were packed, not because of a mass exudus, but because residents shopped around the stores on 11th and North Streets. Both the department of transportation and the TA announced that trains were on time, and streets were not clogged.

Overall, even though the first game was a loss, many residents loved the new arena, the team, and the event itself, and looks forward to many others.

Thanks everyone for participating! This is actually a bit of work, and it's nice to see people getting into it in this thread and/or posting things in their city journals about the SHL.

Here's some information about June Isle that was unavailable for the last update:

June Isle is home to one of the elite soccer teams in the region, so the Sharks knew that it would be tough to get fans. They lanched a marketing campaign throughout the entire region, and so far, there is a lot of interest. A 2-0-0 starting record is beginning to make some people forget about soccer... almost!

The weather in June Isle features Calgary winters and Southeast (USA) summers. Sports fanaticism is traditionally huge for soccer. Some are impressed with this hockey, but can they live together? At best, residents think of their new hockey team as soccer on ice. At worst, they see it as too rough -- why the hitting? For the average fan, it's I like it, something for the winter.

The Friverton Gold Stars hosted the Pern Dragons at Reebok Arena tonight for their home opener. Friverton won their first SHL game in overtime after an exciting comeback, and came ready to show their hometown fans a win.

 

Friverton is a small town with a population of 200,000. Its a town mixed with industry and commerce, parks and canals. But it lacked the attention its neighbouring town Saffron Knights got. Saffron has been home to the SCSL's SKFC football (soccer) team for over 7 seasons. The people of Friverton demanded they be in the SCSL, but they were rejected. However one day, Friverton's Sports Council recieved notice of the SHL and submitted a bid to join. Within a few months the Friverton Gold Stars were accepted and Mayor Ling declared July 10th Hockey Day!

 

This was a fine game between two teams with a lot of promise. It's awfully early in the season, but these are certainly among the teams to watch.

 

The teams started the game well-balanced, and as well as the offenses played, they couldn't get any traction against the opposing defense. But when Pern captain Lindros was called for hooking, it gave Friverton the opening they needed. With the man advantage, Salei was able to slip one past Markkanen at 6:24.

 

^^^When Friverton couldn't find a crack in Pern's defense, a power play gave them the advantage they needed.

 

With Pern returned to full strength, the delicate balance between the teams was restored and almost 25 minutes of hockey passed with no further scoring. Midway through the second period, Pern finally found the opening they needed to even up the score.

Again, the balance reasserted itself. Fans were on the edge of their seats as they knew they were watching a fine game where a small mistake or advantage could make all the difference. Tension mounted on the ice as both teams tried without success to score. Late in the second period, Friverton's Salei and Pern's Paul earned five minute penalties but were unable to earn any change in momentum.

 

^^^Paul came out on top of this one, but that energy boost didn't carry over into the game.

 

More than halfway through the third period, it was again Pern that found an opening, with Zubrus smoking one past Joseph to earn the 2-1 lead.

Down 2-1 in the final minute of the game, Friverton pulled their goalie to allow another attacker, but the desperate plan to take the game to overtime backfired as Pern was able to add an empty-net goal to their tally.

Pern got to take a win home, while Friverton fans left disappointed in the loss. But all admitted it was a good game of hockey.
