Welcome to the Simtropolis Hockey Leauge thread!

What is this thread?
A way to have fun, add a little flavor and life to your cities and city journals, and maybe satisfy the desire for hockey action some folks might have without the NHL playing. But you don't have to know anything about hockey to take part.

Yes, take part. Like some other leagues that have been done on Simtropolis before, such as the soccer league and a previous version of a hockey league, members of Simtropolis can take part in this. Basically, your Sim City region can have a team that will compete against other Simtropolites' teams.

How does it work?
I'm glad you asked. Or I asked. Erm. Anyway, here's how it works. You sign up. I give everyone who signs up a hockey team. Then I pit the teams against each other, simulating a season of hockey between teams from Simtropolis. I'll simulate the games with a computer hockey game, and report back with results, standings, etc. The season will progress to playoffs with team and player awards just like in the NHL. We can trashtalk (within the rules of course) in this thread, develop rivalries, bask in the thrill of victory and suffer through the agony of defeat.

So basically, it requires practically nothing from you, other than participation in this thread to keep it alive. I do all the work, you have all the fun.

You can still participate by rooting for one of the teams. Also you can post here and make your interest in a team known, and if someone drops out you can take over a team. It will also give you first dibs on a team for season two, after the current teams have decided whether to continue.

This was geared toward people who want to have teams for their Sim City cities, but I'll take you guys with real teams if that's what you want to do. The only thing is you will get a random fantasy draft team just like everyone else.

I'm sure some of us hockey lovers would love to get into all the details, but I want to keep this fairly simple so it is easy for people who don't know anything about hockey, and also so it is easy for me to run.

It's great to see there's some interest in this. Just a little update and answer to some questions.

For whoever asked, I'm using NHL 2004, with rosters updated to the end of that season, to simulate this season.

Those of you selecting a real NHL logo for your team, it seems you have to take the team's real colors too. Sorry, seems to be a limitation of the game.

Finally, just thought I'd let you know I'm not sure exactly when this will start. With 30 slots I'd like to get a good number of Simtropolites with teams so we don't have too many other teams. So I'm going to wait a bit until we get a good number of people signed up. Let me know if you have a strong opinion on how many people this should be.

In the meantime, you can help by spreading the word, especially since we're lost over here in Off-Topic. Mention it in chat, keep this thread bumped, etc. Adding a link to this thread in your sig would be great for any of you willing to do so. You can copy the logo in my sig if you'd like.

I'm afraid people will be intimidated or think you have to know about hockey, but you really don't. Really, the people who have signed up can sit back now and never have to do another thing if they don't want to (though as I've said, participation in this thread will only make things more fun). I really think this will be a good idea for those who have city journals or who just want to get a little more life-like feeling for their city.

MrBoo, I think it's a great idea for everyone to post a picture of their arena if they'd like. It isn't required of anyone, but I'm all for getting into the spirit of the game and showing things like that.

CJAH, that's a fine update for now. You'll have more material for an update once we get going. You'll have a roster and we'll start playing games soon, once we get more teams. I don't see the depressed guy, but I'll look again.

Well, I'm going to wait to do the team roster generation until we get a few more teams involved. This post has only really been up for 24 hours, so I'd like to get more people to discover it and become involved. There'll be a few more days of sign-ups at the very least, so don't get too antsy. Like I've said before, you can speed things along by getting more people involved and interested.

Then, trades. It's up to you guys. We can do trades if you guys are interested. It's a little more work for me, but I don't mind as long as it doesn't get out of hand. Basically the way it would work is I would need a post in here or in PM format from both parties approving of the trade, and then I would put it through. I'm inclined to allow trades because I think it is a way to get a little more interest going for those into hockey more, but without complicating things too much, because those without a big interest in it wouldn't have to make any trades if they don't want to - you can just stand with your original team if you'd like.
