Why can't I make a "pedestrian neighborhood"?

I tried to make a small neighborhood with only pedmall tiles instead of streets. I thought my sims would walk to the adjacent bus stop (which was placed along an avenue) and ride the bus to work. But after months, even years, all the lots had the little green car zot over them...no one was walking to the bus stop. Any ideas? I also have yet to see any ped traffic on my mountain trails or pedestrian bridges....grrrrr......

Well, a residential lot must connect to a street, road, ect. for it to develop. You can make an ally way behind the houses with ped mall tiles. ut the tiles will not replace roads.

I was always hesitant to use those, but now that I know that, I have ideas on how to utilize them. Thanks Tungston!!

Tunston,

So if we use pedmall tiles near industry and commercial zones, what do they connect to? I would expect the tiles are for people to walk on, and people have to come from somewhere. I was assuming they would come from houses, residential, but since they do not work for residential, what is on the other end of a pedmall? (parking garage? bus stop? subway? rail station?)

Thanks.

Ok, so I just tried zoning some commercial around pedmalls. I connected the pedmalls to road...actually, the last pedmall tile before the road was a GLR/pedmall tile, but it doesn't seem like that should make a difference. Buildings did grow, I didn't get any zots, but the route query tool didn't show any pedestrians using my pedmalls...I've got a picture, but I'm not sure how to put it into this post...

Cougar is correct in his assumption that ped malls must be placed next to a mass transit staion in order to see significant use. Please remember, however, that ped malls used in industrial areas should be placed as a pedestrian alley behind or between the buildings as mentioned by Jezus53. Your industrial buildings need to be touching a street, road, or avenue so freight can leave your city. The stations used in the pic below are bus/subway combos.

Ped malls will also be used if they are near enough to residential areas to prevent a lengthy commute. In this pic, pedestrians are crossing the bridge provided in the stream kit by Pegasus and using a ped mall to walk to work:

There are a lot of ways to use the pedmalls, limited mostly by your imagination. I use them for seawalls, and retainers, because they can be plopped on the coastal tiles, and under water. The dirt road tiles look good along a beach, or going through shallow water.

I just want to get it straight. Are Pedmalls the same thing as open paved area? Where are Pedmalls in the tool bar?

Pedmalls are just open areas which pedestrains can walk on, but cars etc are restricted from.

If you have NAM they should be somewhere in the mass transit button.

You can develope financial districts using them but not an entire city.

I believe the open paved area you are talking about is a park.

The Pedmalls are in the roads menu, you need to tab down to them.

Is there anything out there to make plazas ped transit-enabled? It seems like they would make a good break in the pattern.

On a "Simtropolis Related" note, what does the "Linear : Threading : Single : Branch " mean at the top of the thread?

    @ArchangelMichael

"The proximity of a desirable thing tempts one to overindulgence. On that path lies danger.

That is absolutely my favorite series on earth! What do you think of the work his son, Brian, has done on it?

It's just the way the thread is laid out. Example, if you select threading at the top of the thread there is a little table that shows every post and how it relates to the other posts. I was wondering that too. You can click them, nothing bad is gonna happen. Just remember that Linear is the style you are probably looking at right now. Take ST 6.0 for a test drive. You might be surprised.

The problem with transit enabled lots is they can't be plopped adjacent to each other.

Ped Malls are network-enabled puzzle pieces, just like the puzzle pieces for road, rail, etc in the NAM. This means that they operate just like draggable networks, but in this case it is a pedestrian network. Puzzle pieces are different from lots.

Lots with transit enabling cannot be placed next to each other to form a contiguous network. If you have a plaza piece that is transit enabled for pedestrians, you will not see pedestrian traffic move from one lot to the next - but they can cross the lot as long as there is road access on more than one side.
