Regions & Downloads & more

Hi all,

I love SimCity 4 (deluxe) and have been an avid fan since the beginning... I have a couple questions about SimCity 4 that i just can't find a clear answer on and believe me I've spent a ton of time reading all the sites...

first, has anyone created or figured out a way to "join" the regions together? this is one thing I didn't like in this game, the cities are so much smaller than in SimCity 3000... I really don't like the separate cities in the region thing...

next, I have committed what I saw called "plug-in suicide" I think. I downloaded a bunch of stuff, then when I couldn't see hardly any of them in the menu, I downloaded the lot editor and then brought a bunch in and "saved as" into the game. Than I read about "plug-in suicide" 46.gif

So, my first question here is, how do I get rid of multiple menu items? I now have duplicate things in the game menu and I can't figure out how to remove them. I can't find the answer to this question anywhere! I downloaded the bat, the SC4 Tool, the plug-in manager and I still can't figure it out. The amount of information, add-ons, downloads for this game is completely overwhelming!

Basically, I doubt it will be awhile before I want to attempt making my own lots & props, (but apparently I have everything I need for that now)...

I just want to know which add-ons or whatever do I need to see and delete multiple things from my menu, how do I rename things (example, I downloaded a "Large Firestation", it shows up twice in my game menu as
"custom ploppable - insert ploppable description here" .

I thought the plug-in manager would let me see the props, plops and stuff and organize them, but it doesn't seem to help, or maybe my head is just too rummy to get it.

I also have things I downloaded in my plug-ins (in my docs/SimCity4/plug-ins) folder that I have no idea what they are, so I don't know whether I could or should delete them..

Any help would be so much appreciated!!! I feel like a total moron for not being able to figure this all out!
I just want to play the game and add in some of the cool things that are out there. And I really wish my cities could be bigger.

The large cities are bigger than anything in SC3000. No they cant be joined together (something I've asked before as well).

There is no way to join regions together without totally redoing the regions.

I would say you have a real mess on your hands. When you do a "save-as" you will have two of the lot. All of those lots will be in the documents plugins folder. If you can find them, you can delete them.

The only thing that will show in the Plugin Manager are the model files, and some custom content will include those in a dat file, which will not show in the Plugin Manager. Model files are created when you render a scene using the gMax BAT.

If you have the model files you can open them in the Plugin Manager, then edit the names and values.

I would suggest starting with something simple with gMax and working your way to more complex custom content.

Hey jdv57, Welcome to Simtropolis! 9.gif

I'm going to try and answer your questions...

1. first, has anyone created or figured out a way to "join" the regions together? this is one thing I didn't like in this game, the cities are so much smaller than in SimCity 3000... I really don't like the separate cities in the region thing...

Nope it isn't possible at all to join to regions together, or cities together. However you can make a custom sized region. Many people have even created 20x20 large city tile regions. You can read more about it here from the omnibus.

2. next, I have committed what I saw called "plug-in suicide" I think. I downloaded a bunch of stuff, then when I couldn't see hardly any of them in the menu, I downloaded the lot editor and then brought a bunch in and "saved as" into the game. Than I read about "plug-in suicide"

Well I think you might have a problem with one of your downloads which is affecting all of your custom downloads, also it could be you installed the lots improperly, which is highly unlikely because I'm sure you put all the files in your plugins folder. Also you may want to try deleting or moving all the files out of your plugins folder and download a test one to see if it is a problem with the game or one of your downloads. If you need any more information check this omnibus article out.

This could mean you downloaded or have multiple lots or bats. Try going getting rid of them manually. Go to the plugins folder and quickly browse through each file if you have multiples, delete.

4. I just want to know which add-ons or whatever do I need to see and delete multiple things from my menu, how do I rename things (example, I downloaded a "Large Firestation", it shows up twice in my game menu as
"custom ploppable - insert ploppable description here".

I think tungston answered that one for you. 2.gif

5. I thought the plug-in manager would let me see the props, plops and stuff and organize them, but it doesn't seem to help, or maybe my head is just too rummy to get it.

If you're too confused it's better to small and not use the Plugin manager as tungston said. Don't worry after a while you will get the hang of it.

6. I also have things I downloaded in my plug-ins (in my docs/SimCity4/plug-ins) folder that I have no idea what they are, so I don't know whether I could or should delete them..

Try using cleanitol, it will get rid of any unwanted files. You can download it here but you need to register at the BSC LEX to download.

Any help would be so much appreciated!!! I feel like a total moron for not being able to figure this all out!

Don't worry about it, you will get the hang of it eventually. Start small like downloading content from the STEX here at Simtropolis, or reading the omnibus first, they're are some really great articles there and I definatly encourage you to read them.

Have Fun! And don't stress it... -Element 2.gif

    Thanks for the help so far..

    I've figured out how to get most of the duplicates out. because i brought them into the plugin manager a couple days after downloading them, i can see 2 with 2 different modified dates. so when i delete the 1st one, it gets rid of the duplicates...

    i downloaded some stuff over at simcity.com and the problem i'm having with them is that they don't show up anywhere in the menu... i downloaded some farms, etc.. and i can't figure out how to find them to put them in.

    I did go in and look at the existing regions that come with the game and picked one to re-start out with that had some large sized city squares... it's just a pain to have to go out to region view and jump around. But I love the game so much that i will get used to it!

    thanks,

    JD

    Sorry but I cant beleave that.

    One of my biggest cities as got 1,6 Million inhabitants. If you devide this with 16, you get 100.000 people.

    100.000 people living on 1km

    100.000 people living on 1km²? Thats more than unrealistic, it would mean higher Popultionrate than ourer true Metropolis Cities than NY, LA & Tokio! It cant be. I would say: 16x16= 256km².

    Can anybody ask EA or MAXIS, or does anyone know better?quote>

    Well my city (Montrouge) have got 44,000 inhabitants in 2km² (in reality of course) and there's no skycrapers, just low-rise buildings and houses. So if your city in SC4 has got tons of skycrapers, I think it's realistic compared to mine.

    You can do the calculation yourself, each tile is 16 meters square. So the sides of each city size is as follows:

    small = 64 tiles

    medium = 128 tiles

    large = 256 tiles

    Hi, jdv57,

    Welcome to Simtropolis. If the farms are growable, they won't show up in any menu, they will just pop up when you zone ag, and conditions are right for them to grow. It is the same with all other lots; there are growable and/or plopable versions of all lots. The custom content at Simcity.com is a tad unreliable as some of it isn't supported or tested adequately. It can be tried out in a tile created just for testing purposes, a "test bed" city, and I would keep tabs on it even after that.

    Have fun.
