Today is Pi Day!  Celebrated by math(s) geeks all over the world, March 14 is the date representation of the first 3 digits of Pi!

So how does one celebrate Pi day?

Should we all find the area of a circle or something?

Did we celebrate square root day? 03/03/09

The next one isn't until 04/04/16

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

    And some geeks, like me, think the idea of here being a "pi day" is entirely stupid, seeing as it is a transcendental number and thus no date actually represents it.

    Besides, for a lot of people in the world, March 14th is 14/3 or 14/03, so the apparent significance instantly vanishes.

    Myself, I prefer "not found day", April 4th. That one is exact, not approximate, and the beauty of it is that it works whether you use mm/dd or dd/mm since it's 04/04 either way.

    That's not a square root day, that's just a square day.

    And in any case, we haven't had a square day since 12/12/144, and we're never going to have another one ever again unless we change our calendar. In theory, we'd be due for one on 45/45/2025, but there aren't that many months in a year nor are there any months with that many days, so it won't happen.

    Though, you could make the argument that five square days come every year on 01/01, 02/04, 03/09, 04/16, and 05/25. Of course, if you use dd/mm, then you only see the first three.

    Or, you know, we could quit with all this bulljive numerology and realize that these dates don't have any special cosmic significance. Just an idea.2.gif

    Dude, you totally killed my fun. I was so stoked for today till I read you're post. Now I'm actually sad! 8.gif

    As for the other countries, we can do pie day on July, 22. So that way it's 22/7. I remember that was another to type out pi.

    Well, I had a good Pi Day myself.

    As for the other countries, we can do pie day on July, 22. So that way it's 22/7. I remember that was another to type out pi. quote>

    Actually, 22/7 is not a good approximation of Pi in my opinion, so I never use it.

    Pi (to 10 digits) =     3.141592654

    22/7 (to 10 digits) = 3.142857143

    There is a significant difference, and can show up in calculations. For mine, I use an approximation to 10 digits, since I've memorized it over the years.

    I know it's not good for exact measurements, but I like to use it when I'm to lazy to get a calculator. I like working with fractions rather than decimals.

    Well, my calculus class celebrated this on Friday. It was fun and all except for the fact that my buddy conveniently brought a ton of soda, including those special "real sugar" Dr. Peppers, after I mentioned that I gave up soda for Lent 3.gif The temptation was so great but I resisted!

    Good for you! Power to you! I don't think I could give that up. Not yet at least.

    I haven't had rhubarb since my parents grew some in their garden when I was about 6. Blech.

    I'm more of a fan of palindromic dates. I belive the next one would be 01/11/10. As for the other countries it's... well 01/11/10... just have to wait a little longer.

    EDIT; Unless of course you want to include all of the year's digits.... 'twould be 01/02/2010. A bit sooner.

    Here's a Pi day joke involving two of my favorite numbers:

    "Get real"

              \

    i          π

     \

      "Be Rational"

    I also, for the record like the numbers e and Φ 1.gif (Both of which don't have holidays coming up anytime soon)

    I recently bought a book from the Barnes & Noble bargain bin called The History of Pi.

    I couldn't find any good recipies in it, though.

    Seriously, though, I enjoy books involving the history of numbers and well-known mathematical equations.

    Oh, I'm good someone understands the 1/3/37 comment, could you (or someone else) explain it?

    And yes, I'll admit that I'm geeky, but more so with math, my grammer needs polishing.

    Yes Pi day! 39.gif

    What should we calculate first?

    Area of this real pie?

    potd_pi-pie.jpg

    So approximately 12cm in radius...

    A = Pi · r²

    A = (3.1415926535) · (12)²

    A = 3.1415926535 · 144

    A = 452.389342104cm²

    It's horrible! At my highschool they made us memorize the first 10 digits! 32.gif

    1337 means 'leet' (as in elite minus the 'e') in leet (1337) speak. So when the calander reaches 1/3/37, it will be 'leet' (1337) day4.gif

    It started out as a hacker thing, then parts of the gaming community took to it. Then everyone started doing it and all of a sudden it became annoying, since now it wasn't just the cool people doing it. Like a lot of meme-ish things, it died from going too mainstream. It got too big and burst from overpopularity and the resulting overuse.

    Other memes have suffered similar fates by even going so far as to find their way out of the internet and into the real world. It's how Chuck Norris jokes died. It's how rickrolling died.

    Time Magazine put "AIG Fail" on their cover recently... so, I think we can start digging a grave for that one too, now.

    I see. I think I just got into the gaming/internet community when it was dying. See, for the longest time, I played Starcraft, and only starcraft. Never on battlenet, because there was never any good maps. So I stayed huddled in my room with no outside connection. Lame. Then I found Simtropolis.
