$$$ Wealth long commute times - Help!

Hi,

I have slowly managed to build my self some High Density $$$ wealth residential. However, I am now having problems with vacany due to 'long commute times'.

How do I counteract this? I have a great rail and bus network and have now just placed a subway system but it seems to have made no difference.

I have tried to post a pic here, but not sure its worked.

I've been having the same problems....Even if my sims have to move just something like 20 tiles to work and there's no traffic problem, its considered a long commute...I'm starting to think something's not right with the game..I've installed the NAM and the updates from maxis but the problem persists. Are sims so lazy they can't handle a 15 minute car drive to get to work?... Any clues?

Have you tried downloading the NAM? It solves commute time and makes it more realistic. Download it here

(you must register there)

The NAM is also in the Modds and Downloads section right here on Simtropolis.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

You may be experiencing a 'quirk' of the game that allows more high-wealth residentials to grow than there are actual jobs for at the time. Even with high-wealth job lots available, not all those jobs are dedicated to high-wealth sims. Therefore, the high-wealth jobs quickly fill leaving nothing for the other residents. Then it's as if the Sims are driving around looking for jobs that aren't there. Thus the high commute time. You might be able to offset this issue by raising taxes on the high-wealth Sims so that they won't appear so quickly.

Hope this is makes sense and is helpful. There are other threads about this in the Forums, so you might want to search around a bit.

Hi all and thanks for the many quick respones.

I do have NAM, although not the new one that has been listed.

I'll look into the lack of $$$ jobs, but isnt that normaly shown  as a breifcase with a red cross over it?

These buildings specifically state that the building '... has been abandoned due to the long commute time'.

I think I might have read somewhere that $$$ sims do not use public transport. Is this correct?

    Cheers

Does your city have any CS$$$ or C$$$? Rich people tend to work at high-paying jobs 9.gif

I'm not sure about R$$$ not using public transport....

I am very familiar with this problem. The R$$$ sims will use public transport but will still use cars. I think that you can only get about 50% or so using Public transport. I don't think this is your issue though. A solution is to download NAM Jan '09 from the LEX and set it to Simulator Z Ultra. This will solve most of your commute worries but dramatically reduces the amount of automata on the roads. This is only visual though.

I have the Jan. 2009 NAM but I still have lots of congestion (->long commute times), like 8000 car commuters on 1 piece of road. I managed to decrease the overall commute times a little bit by doing massive investments; ring highway, subway, El rail etc. but in some corners of the city (central CBD city), the apartment buildings still turn "dark". I didn't found the Jan. 2009 NAM config tool yet, if I did I could set another simulator which generates less traffic.
