Amador Bernabe fired for 'un-Australian toilet habits'

A MAN who uses water instead of toilet paper says he was sacked for his "un-Australian" toilet habits.

Amador Bernabe, 43, is a machine operator in Townsville on a working visa from the Philippines, the Townsville Bulletin reports.

On Thursday, he claims his foreman followed him into the bathrooms questioning his toilet hygiene.

Mr Bernabe said his employer, Townsville Engineering Industries (TEI), sacked him yesterday for not going to the toilet the Australian way.

"I went to go to the toilet and I took a bottle of water when my foreman saw me and he said, 'you can't bring the water in there'," Mr Bernabe said.

The foreman followed Mr Bernabe into the toilet despite his protests.

"I said it's my personal hygiene. I didn't break any law, I didn't break any rules of the company, why can't I do this, and he said he would report me to the manager.

The next day, Mr Bernabe says he was called into the manager's office.

"He asked me what had happened and I explained to him and he said if I didn't follow the Australian way I would be immediately terminated and I said 'sir, then you better terminate me'."

The move has angered union bosses and politicians on the Australia Day weekend.

Australian Manufacturing Worker's Union state organiser Rick Finch said the incident was shocking.

"I think it is atrocious, an invasion of a person's rights and cultural beliefs," he said.

"If it wasn't so disgusting it would almost be laughable."

Greens spokeswoman Jenny Stirling praised Mr Bernabe for standing up for his rights.

"I commend the man for standing up for himself and I encourage the employer to have further talks with the union and the employee and I am sure commonsense will prevail," she said.

"I would like to see how Australians feel when they go to Europe where in places they don't have toilet paper."

TEI could not be reached for comment.

strange, gross, and awkward.

also...something must have been noticable if the boss was suspicious enough to follow him into the stall.

I once went in a public toilet in Naples (which you had to pay for) and there didn't appear to be any toilet paper.

And why is that?

It's everybody's right to determine how they wipe their butt.

Wow...that is just WEIRD, I don't think he should be able to be canned for that. If he failed to wash his hands or something it'd be one thing...but that kinda stuff is personal business. How many people do you guys know who don't always wash their hands properly who don't get fired? eh? Weird. o.O

There are no holders either in the uni toilets or a lot of other toilets here, it's just piled over the water tank, so I don't know, really 5.gif

I can see where this could be a concern if this guy was, say, a waiter or a chef. But jeez, he's a machine operator. So what if the manner in which he cleans himself doesn't follow some "standard"? It's not like he's handling anything where cleanliness is a high concern.

The really amusing part is the adjective used to describe it, though: "un-Australian". Do I detect a hint of racism there?

Oh, yes.

We're really quite a racist bunch when it really comes down to it. 3.gif

Seriously, what the boss did is what should be illegal, following someone into the bathroom and firing them for how they wipe their ass?!

The person fired is from the Philippines, and being a Filipino myself, we don't use toilet paper when wiping, we use water instead. And using water instead of paper doesn't leave feces on the ass, the waste will be wiped out completely.

Well, if it doesn't leave residue on the guys butt, it isn't a matter of a hygiene problem, and the guy doesn't smell like poop or anything then the company should have fired him. Don't know Australian law, but I know employers in the US (at least in the State of Wyoming) can fire you for any reason other than basic discrimination (age, race, sex, disability, gender). However, this sounds like it might be race discrimination and that is wrong! Again, I don't know what Australian laws says about this.

Job discrimination can suck. It happened to me. I could have filed a law suit, but then I figured it just wasn't worth the time and trouble.

I think that bosses should have the right to invade on people's personal hygiene habits. Washing your butt with water is not only un-Australian, it is an evil satanic practice and should be punishable by death.

(If you can't tell that I'm being sarcastic, God help you)

Well there MUST"VE been another reason for it, probably racism seeing as how he described it as "un-australian". Perhaps he was looking forward to his day off which made him use that word? but still,

Well why wouldn't he bring it to the media? He got fired over something completely ridiculous, so it's hardly weird he talks about the idiots that fired him in the media. 47.gif
