Hi,

My new copy of Simcity 4 Delux arrived today.... Hooray!!!

However, I am having problem with it.

My sims do not want to use the train! I have around 15 stations in a town with 20,000 population.

I have set the map up with with Avenues, Roads and rail link all places and into other maps at many locations.

Even my freight is not using the train (freight station).

I have downloaded NAM (April 2008) version from this website and have downloaded a few builings from Maxis.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Lee

Remove some roads. Given the choice, freight will always move by roads before any other mode of transport.

I'll give that a go, however, my sims are not using the trains either. The only thing using the stations are cards and pedestrians.

Its as though the sims go to the station and then just disapear.

I started another map nearby and have placed bus stops there. However, when i click on the buildings it shows that they are fully manned however there are no travel routes to and from the buildings. It says that there are zero commuters!

Tried it, but it didnt work.

All that happened is that a lot of sims left their jobs!

I terminated all the links to the indy zone and no one used the trains, which by this point was the only link to the Indy zone.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Upon further investigation I have established that monorail also does not work, but the subway does.

Its odd as the stations for the train and monorail both show that cars and buses stop there, however, it shows no pedestrian use.

Also when you click on the track for mono and rail it shows no use, however, when clicking on the subway it does show useage.

    PLease....can someone help?

I am going to try and re-install without NAM or maybe ill remove that first and see what happens.

    hi, leemonk

if the trains don't work after you have installed NAM, probably thats becz it takes longer for your sims to travel by train. maybe your stations aren't placed right?

for your trains station to work, make sure the stations are positioned near the heart of your zones, so most of your sims can walk to work after they get off the train, alternatively, you can place subway stations/bus stops near train stations.

for monorail, you might want to add some parking garage near the stations to encourage use, in additional to the above

also, try eliminating all road/subways connecting you zones.

the NAM is a more efficient pathfinding engine than the vanilla game. so even if your sims are not using the train, they are still arriving to work faster

trains arriving even tho no one is not using them is actually quite realistic.

    hope it helps,

    Nomis

    Hi leemonk,

Try everything that Nomis said. Bus stations near train stations or public garages help. BUT, the most important thing is that the track has to cross the station from behind it (the platform), and the front should be facing the road.

    ex:

    II ==> |I|

(II) being the railroad, (==&gt2.gif being the station, and (|I|) the road.

It may sound so obvious, and you may have known it already, but when I started SC4 after Sc3000, I didn't know about the positioning. Given that in sc3000 the stations worked either way.

    Hope that helps,

    7up

    leemonk...

If I am understanding some of your previous posts, you have tried to set up the situation where the only way for Sims to get to work is by rail or monorail and they don't. You also mentioned you had the NAM installed and it stopped working. If that is correct, do you happen to have a left-hand version of the game? If so, did you also select the Left-hand option when installing NAM. The left-hand version of the game will require the left-hand component of the NAM, or else the rail and monorail will not function correctly. More info here... Just a thought...

Also, you mentioned this is a new game for you. Did you also install the patch that is available for Deluxe? This is probably not the cause of your current issue, but there is a patch for Deluxe that fixes some things. The patch is available from the official EA site (registration required) or through SC4Devotion (must also register). Just thought I'd ask...

The station just need to be next to the rail [any postion], and have access to a road type transit.

For passenger stations you need one for the sims to board [residential], and one for them to depart [industrial, or commercial].

Genius!!!!! That worked. Had even noticed they were driving on the left hand side.

It was odd as a downloaded version was working earlier in the day with NAM, so I was bemused that the correct version didnt. BUt I obviously downloaded a US version and purchased the UK version!!

    Thanks very much.....

And also thanks to those others that replied. Its great to see a game as old as this still having an extreamly active forum!!

btw, i guess i still need to download that patch.

    Regards to all.
