Fire

Under previous SC incarnations I have played, it has been possible to start a fire and burn down all or most of a city. I have tried using SC4 with little or no fire protection and can never get more than a single building to burn. It would be nice to see my city burn once just for kicks without being a serial arsonist. Am I doing something wrong? I know crime doesn't pay, but this is ridiculous.

HAHAHA  wow this is hilarious. you just want to light the city on fire and watch your sims burn and run? lol I really have no help for you, the most fires I have ever gotten to start this way is in Dirty Industry Areas with NO fire protection. and thats like once every 20 hours or so of game play. So I myself have wondered about this. Try playing the sims, putting one into a small room and lighting it on fire if u wanna watch stuff burn, and kill them in the process. Just a idea.

Even with no fire departments, no smoke alarm ordinance, and no water, fires usually just disappear out without causing any damage. sometimes the building turns into rubble. It seems that fires can't spread at all. The worst you can do is constantly set your nuclear power plant ablaze, after several attempts it may explode (usually the fire goes out on its own), causing much radiation and some small fires, which quickly disappear.

you can never have a true firestorm on SC. What you would have to do is ignite a few fires at a time. OR just set the tornado and it will cause great damage fast.

I had a fire storm in one of my cities once. I made a lot that I was testing and I modded similar to a combination of two Simgoober lots, one of which was highly flammable and another which grew very prolifically. Then I blocked all maxis growables and grew a city of mostly this new lot. I went to get a coffee and left the city running accidentally. When I came back a quarter of the city had burned to the ground and two other quarters were ablaze.

I don't think you could achieve that without a lot of custom modding to every building you wanted to grow in your city though.

I wonder why they decided to do away with this. Fire is much more realistic than killer robots and more likely than a volcano suddenly appearing in the middle of a city. That is one thing I did enjoy in SM 2000 and 3000 although sometime I did need to turn off disasters in order to keep it from happening.

the robots and UFO's are just stupid imo. its fine if they wanna add that stuff but they should put normal disasters in first. After all, what major city is complete without a devastating fire or horrible flood sometime in its history? Instead we have to unleash the great car monster attack of year 78? come on..

They started on the right track with simcity classic and sc2k, with the disasters and scenarios (the non-disaster scenarios were good too), but they seem to have abandoned that for other features. I for one find u-drive it as nothing more than annoying, accidently clicking on police cars and trains etc..

Agreed. Fires were so legit in SC3000 Unlimited. And another question, why did they get rid of toxic clouds and whirlpools? Those were just fun all around! I would have loved to have the locust plague too since it is now so much easier to have agriculture. SC3 Just had awesome disasters. SC4 has disappointing disasters.

I've never had any really serious fires. Their mostly annoying, but not very distructive. Many I should try what sam did sometime.37.gif

lmao, admittedly i used to do that, id build a lil outhouse in the garden, place a barbeque and then deprive my sim of sleep and force him/her to make burgers until a fire starts

not very nice of me, but i would only do it when extremely bored

on topic though, im also unable to start a serious fire, although 1 fire did take down 5 buildings, that was with fire stations 26.gif but they were poorly placed

The only place I can have a real good fire is in areas of dirty industry. It's usually because I don't water them and I keep fire protection thin there (I don't like dirty industry so I treat them poorly). I also wish I could start a forest fire. I always wanted to use the fire plane but everytime I set the forest ablaze and get to the plane, the tree explodes when the countdown for UDI gets to 2. So now I'm in a plane for no reason. Stupid. Would there be anyway of making a mod to make buildings more burnable?

The "Fire" disaster was much more dangerous in SimCity 2000 (it destroyes EVERYTHING in less than 1 sec!), that's why I hated that one-eyed monster-thing or whatever.

    In SC3K, it was ridicoulus...

Now, in SC4, it is slightly more dangerous than its predecessors (but SC2000 was devastating).

Personally, when I burn down a city with fire (yes, I did, often... XD), I try to destroy Fire Stations first. Ironically, they seem kinda weak against fire, but that's just my opinion.

Skyscrapers are difficult to burn down, but they burn as hell when a volcano is erupting XD

Fun fact: In SimCity 2000, the developers increased the speed and power of fire in order to make the Oakland Hills scenario a challenge. As a side effect, every little one-tile fire was a threat to spread and burn any city to the ground, and if you got a disaster that started many scattered fires, like an earthquake or the monster, you were capital-S Screwed unless you had a ton of firefighters and were fast with the bulldozer.

Slightly off topic: the disaster I REALLY miss is the hurricane. Rebuilding after one of them was a real challenge.

Yeah, I remember that scenario, it was too challenging... that's why I loved the good old SC2000...

Too bad they did not appear in SimCity 4. I wonder if there's a way to create a mod that will ad some scenarios to the game...
