Zoning sizes?

What's the optimal zoning size for R, C, I? I zone 6x6 for Residential and commerical because in the walkthrough I see that the largest building can take up 6x6 squares. But what should I zone for industrial? I want all of my blocks to be able to contain one of the largest sized buildings.

This is the vanilla game, no mods or special buildings of extra size in mind.

6x6, that is 3 tiles away from the street. You can zone 6x6 industry as well, though I use sometimes something like 6x12. Only important thing is that the starting industry building is not more than 3 tiles away from the street. When the companies grow, they develop smaller buildings that are growing next to it. Workers will attend those building through the main entrance at the starting industry building. Accordingly, those outbuildings can be even more far away from streets than 3 tiles. So, after all, 6x6 for industry is quite acceptable.

If you want to know what lot sizes will grow in the game, get the Lot Editor program, and look through the list. For instance, for industrial lots, only a few manufacturing lots are 6x6, but more common sizes include 5x6 and 6x5, 5x3, as well as 4x4. Also, for CO$$$ office buildings, the most common size is 4x4, with none being 6x6. In fact the only commercial lots that are 6x6 or some C$$ and C$$$ malls. Knowing what lot sizes things will grow on gives you greater control over what will grow (though, not perfect control. . .). Hope this helps!

As said the the biggest in game zoned buildings are 6x6 but if you have downloaded any content from the STEX you have have even bigger buildings. I genraly only zone up to 4x4. i.e 4x4 Also notice how some of the low density housing can be seem with different lengths i.e with bigger or smaller gardens/driveways. This also happens with commercial and industryial as the number of parking spaces can change.

For industrial, sometimes I'll zone 8x8.  It usually fills up nicely without any 'No Road Connection' zots.

Hello all. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I have a question about zone sizes. I'm trying to lay down some 4x4 high-density commercial zones and the game just won't let me, even while holding shift and/or alt. It keeps trying to force smaller 1x2 mini-zones, with half of them facing the opposite direction. Is there some work around for this that I'm not realizing or does it even matter? I just want a continuous 4x4 HD commercial zone and it seems pretty random when it allows it and when it doesn't despite holding shift/alt. Any insight would be most appreciated.

I see, I think 4x4 is the biggest for residential, only C and I can go to 6x6.

Also, can houses exit through avenues?

Actually, I believe that there are a few 5x5 default maxis lots that are residential. Perhaps some 5x4 or 4x5 as well.

For your second question, houses can exit on to an avenue, BUT, unless there is a break in the median (or the NAM team someday completes the Turning Lane addon) then your sims will only be able to head right (unless you have left hand driving enabled, in which case substitute right with left) from their home until there is a break. Err. . . I hope that made some sense.

    According to the

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/561176/21501

    Residential only goes to 4x4.

Also, I shouldn't make so many spaces between roads to fit in bus stops and gardens etc... right? I should rather place those inside the lots? Because making too many big spaces between roads increases the distance of the city, wastes space etc...

You're both right. However the residential buildings that appear on a 4x5, etc are actually smaller buildings built on a larger plot. Pay attention to the scaffolding while the building is under construction for the truth. 48.gif

I encounter this a LOT since I zone pretty much exclusively 4x4 and cringe whenever I see a Dolan Contractors show up (building itself is only 2x3 so lots of wasted space)
