Can't Install Rush Hour Expansion Pack

I have had the separate versions of Simcity 4 and Rush Hour for about 3 years.   For reasons I can't remember I gave up on the game but came back to it.  I never got RH installed.  So I finally contacted Aspyr and they contacted me.  I did what they suggested.

*check for Apple Software Updates

*repair disk permissions

*uninstall everything and put the files in a folder in the root directory

*create a new account with full permissions

All these did not work

I'm not going to go out and buy Simcity 4 Deluxe just to fix this if I already have the two games

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have a 1.25ghz eMac with OS10.3.9.  It meets all the software and hardware minimum requirements.  SC4 runs smoothly.  It's just RH that won't install.

Odd. Never a problem with RH install and I am on an intel iMac. You are on a G4. Bad CD? Scratched?

Sounds like you have a similar machine as to what I have.

Tell me, what precisely is happening when you try to install?

When you installed SC4 without deluxe, did you install it in a different location than the default location?

I bought Simcity 4 at a local CompUSA and Rush Hour at Amazon.com

The CD's are not scratched. For me if a game is not in its case or in the computer its on a towel or tissue.

I have tried several locations for the SC4. It creates an Application folder in the User account. I've tried the Applications Folder. I have tried a New User Account with SC4 in its own folder.

Right now, because nothing is working, I have SC4 in its own folder in the main user account

As to what actually comes up? First I get the README, which I click through. Then Rush Hour's License Agreement which I agree to. There is a slight pause, and then I get a message: "This installer is looking for an application named SimCity 4 and didn't find one. If you have changed the name of yor application, please rename it." I click OK and get a second message to quit or Retry. I have tried 10 times in a row with retry but have gotten the same message.

Note: out of curiosity, does the Rush Hour Installer look like an OS9 file on everyone's CDs?

Make sure that the SimCity 4 application is named that, with the space in the correct spot. If it is, try different combinations of spaces between words (Sim City4, Sim City 4, SimCity4). If you still get nothing, make sure it's in the folder you installed it to (or maybe Applications?).

Not sure what you mean by OS9 installer, but on mine it looks like a CD over an old iFruit iMac, with an arrow pointing down from the CD to the computer

Rush Hour specifically asked for "SimCity 4" it was in quotes. As you have read above, it says that 'if you have changed the name of the application, please rename it'.

I appologize if I was not clear, I did try the Applications folder several times, but I still got the error message while trying to install Rush Hour.

When I mentioned the Rush Hour Installer file, I was just trying to find out if this was a common file. I guess it is. It happens to be a common OS9 file icon.

You could try a manual instal, where you just drag, drop and replace the information. You can find this information on the CD's in the "Installation Data" Folder. However Im not to sure if this will work, so just make sure you have a backup of any cities, plugins or albums that you may have.

Thanks for the suggestion.  In fact I tried this.  SimCity4/Rush Hour ran but there were things missing.  Text in text boxes in Region screen was missing.  This caused the game to crash and lock up the whole computer.  I rebooted the computer and went back in.  This time i went straight in to selecting an area to create a city.  When I tried to build a road, the game crashed again.  So, although you can install the game manually, I think you need the installer to get all your ducks in a row.

I think at this point Aspyr tech support is getting creative.  They have requested a save file from my System Profiler.

Seems to me that the trouble might be that you've moved around the original SC4 install location.

Have you tried deleting everything and reinstalling the entire thing from scratch, using the default location? If not, I recommend it. Don't worry too much about losing your cities. The Rush Hour upgrade is likely to screw them all up anyway.

I have also tried the default SimCity 4 location.

One other thing I have tried is to copy the Rush Hour 'loader' and data folder into the SimCity 4 folder. The thought was that it should be the very first place the loader looks for the Application. But I still get the error message. I have tried this in a new user account as well. (deleting SC4 from the main account first)

Strange. I got Deluxe Edition, and all you had to do was drag and drop the folder from the DVD. Is it not just possible to replace the existing SC4 install with RH, then run it, it will ask for the SC4 CD, copy the required data, then run.

Now that you did a "manual" install have you tried to install RH again over the manual install?

TEG, the CD install is different. You have an installer on each CD each of a different size. They each contain information vital to the install. They changed things when they made your DVD and made everything drag and drop.

unityx, the manual install was somthing I tried a while ago but I will do it again if what you suggest actually works (and right now I am willing to try anything

One last thought that involves File corruption. Disk 1's installer is only 300kb. If someone could upload it or a moderator could make it a temporary downloadable file, I could see if that is the cause of the problem.

I am not suggesting doing the manual install again per say. What I suggest is to do it again but then run the automatic installer for RH. Not really sure if that will make a difference or not, probably not, but its worth a shot.

I tried the manual method again. But I think The installers affect the SC4 application in some way. There is one screen that I have not mentioned because I didn't think it was important. In the background there is a screen that shows Installing... File: Installing 0 of 35

So I think it is always searching for the SC4 application but not finding it for one reason or another. One reason is as you have suggested is corruption. I have tried copying the installer off the CD to install with but that does not work (same result). I'd hate to find out after 5 years of owning the CD that the CD is bad.

Try using Disk Utility to create a disk image of the RH installer CD. Actually I do that anyway so I dont have to have the actual CD in the drive to play the game, just mount the image. If it fails to create a CD image the disc is indeed bad.

Also, you mention the file thing. Mine always hangs when installing for a while too but eventually gets going.

I know its a Mac, but do you have any anti-virus software installed?

Maybe try starting up with the shift key down, I think that is safe boot and will turn off an bunch of extensions. The CD drive should still work.

No, the installer is not corrupted. Mine is 300kb as well, which tells me that the installer doesn't install anything thats not in the "installation Data" folder.

I still feel that the manual install is the way to go.

So, make sure you have installed everything on both disks.

If you have, and that doesn't work, then manually install everything from the first disk, then open the second disk, go into installation data and use the installer on that disk to install the second disk.

Im not too sure if this will work, but its worth a shot.

If none of this works, then tell me where you are putting the files from the manual install.

You could also Delete SC4, and then manually install everything...

If the Installer was just an Installer, than why is the one on disk 2 5.4mb?  Those two files have got to have something to do with the install.  I have dragged the data files from RH disks 1&2 to  the SimCity 4 Data folder.  Some of those files go in specific subfolders like the fonts and the music files.  Even when I am done with this and I run SimCity, as I have said before,  I am left with blank text windows.  For example, when you have to name your city.  That whole section is blank.  If I want to change display options from the Regions menu, that window is blank.

Tell you what, to keep you all from guessing, since I have a ticket out with Aspyr, I will ask if  the installers do more than install.

At one point I thought that I could try Disk 2's installer until I saw that it was bigger than the one on Disk 1.  That is where I got on the track that they do more than just install.

I am all too happy to be wrong.  I just want my game to run.

Well, I did the very last thing possible. I wiped my drive and installed from the original disks. I then installed SC4 then followed up with Rush Hour! 4.gif [sigh] Backed up everything but my bookmarks...

I didn't want to do it this way but maybe I fixed other things in the process.

Incidentally, you can't just drag and drop. The installers edit the SC4 application. It starts out at about 13.8mb for just SimCity 4 but when you add in Rush Hour it gets 2.3mb larger for a total of 16.1mb and its icon changes.

In the end perhaps this topic will help someone with similar problems or similar ideas.

Anyway thanks for all the help.
