The Burj al Arab project

I have just started to construct the Burj al Arab hotel in Gmax it's one of the coolest buildings in the world https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif>

And this is the first I have created, I haven't focused so much on the details yet just made the basic shapes.

I have experimented a bit with textures for the windows

 

 

next I will start with the resturant deck on the back.

 

 

If I could make up a good way to make it stand on an island (it does so in Dubai were it belongs) I would but I don't think that would work in the game, maybe with some mod that allows landmarks to be placed on water

it looks great so far, just be sure to make it very white as in the pic. and don't skimp on details. this is a very ambitious project.

Wow. I've been waiting for someone to do the Burj-al-Arab! Modern Middle Eastern aarchitecture is really coming into it's own and it's been a long time coming that someone picked this up as a project!

As for the island, Isn't there something in the Lot Editor that makes surface water on the lot? You'd probably have to terraform a round Island in God Mode, but if you make a water lot big enough... make the edges round with land on the outside.. place it on the round island... maybe you could achieve the atol-like setting the Burj is on.

I can't wait to be able to use this in the game either, I would put it on an island either near the citycore or in some wealthy suburb.

i'm not really satisfied with it so far, somehow there's something not completely right with it can't figure out what though. Oh well maybe it gets better when I change to the correct colors and add details and materials.

It may all be in vain... the Maxis crew might beat you to it, seeing st there's no better building in the world to make a landmark out of. Hopefully they won't beat you to it. maybe, yours will be better.

sorry for not posting but I am currently on the wrong computer, I won't be able to post any update until late next week or weekend, hope it won't be to late though thoose Maxis designers will probably not be able to resist this magnificent building.

Killer work! Think ya might be willing to do the giant Ryugyang Hotel in Pyongyang, as it was originally envisioned to look in the colors of the NK flag instead of the drab facade it has today. I've seen a few pics of it, but I dunno any good sites that might carry them, unless skyscrapers.com has some. NK, from what I remember of some downloads for SC2K, has, or had some pretty unique architecture. I dunno if some of those buildings are still intact or left to decay for the upkeep of Kim's parade routes.

I will continue on this projec as soon as I get 3dsmax 5 up and running again, it doesn't seem to work on Windows XP. Has anyone else had this problem?

Wow, I've never seen a picture of that hotel before.  If I am correct that hotel when completed will be the largest hotel in the world, but at the moment its just a hollow shell of a building.  It's been under construction for quite some time hasnt it?

he hotel is open for business and I believe has been for some time. Saw a thing on Discovery about it, the only 7 Star (IIRC) hotel in the world.

If the actual modelling of the hotel is proving tricky, there is a structure being built in Portsmouth, England that is similar in design but far simpler and smaller, called the Spinnaker Tower. It can be found at  http://www.pertmaster.com/ company/case8.htm

I have an obsession with archetecture, ang the BAA is one of my favorite hotels to sit and stare at, because i cant afford to go there. it has an amazing structure, though. its supposed to represent a sail.

I have the same obsession as you, Hooloovoo - infact i'm starting my Architecture course at university this year, but I too am also fasinated by the appearance the Burj al Arab. I've read magazine articles about it and it just sounds amazing.

I can't wait to see what this looks like in the game!

I have WinXP, too. I have gmax 1.2 and its work function.
My WinXP updated automatic. When the gmax doesn't do, you must install that new, that had I too.
