I downloaded the demo and played the first mission of the tutorial that they have there. It's very similarly structured to the original game - the graphics are great, and most of the humor is there. Though I do miss seeing my Tropicans' thoughts and feelings in the scrolling bar when I click on them - some of the stuff that they had written for the original game is really funny.

I did find myself missing the music from the original game. The music in T3 is fine, but I found it a bit repetitive - with the original, there was over two hours of different songs, but for the new version it seemed like every twenty minutes or so I was hearing the same song. But perhaps this was the way the demo was set up? I don't know, as I haven't gotten the full game yet...

If I could get the music tracks from the first game up and running with the new version, I'd be a happy El Presidente!

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley
"No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' " - Dani Bunten Berry

It is a demo. I found only 10-15 minutes of music in the demo of the original game. I will have to check gamestop or EB games because I must have missed it at Fred Meyer.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I downloaded and started playing the demo for the xbox 360 version -and im sorry to say its not very good. the new features are great, the achievements look good, but the camera and placement controls are so frustrating!!!!! i've been playing far cry 2's map editor lately so im used to its camera controls, and then tropico has the reverse!! its so annoying and i gave up as i couldn't get past it. when placing buildings i kept getting a something is in the way message, and when placing roads i got the same thing and it said the turns were too sharp. there may be a patch soon or something to fix this, or an option to invert camera controls in the full game -but the initial view from the demo is disappointing.

Well it is a PC game after all and it's controls are really for mouse... Yet don't you yourself find it unfair to say that something is bad because it is simply in reverse compared to the game you played before, simply because you're not "used to " it?

After playing this game for a few months, I'd like to describe how the game works at least in the way I see it. Frankly, T3 is no SC4, but I guess you already know that. Seriously though, it's right what they say that you have to control all things unless you want your economy to plummet. There's just a few misconceptions that might help you when playing the game (the demo first mission in my case). The demo is actually very easy to do, but I want to maximize my twenty years, so I try my best to avoid completing the tasks. I'm only gonna talk about the first mission demo here. The second mission is kinda boring for me with no agriculture and all that. Of course, some things may apply in the retail version.

Economy is the most priority. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. I know that you want to increase the wages to increase the living conditions your people but there is only a limit to how far that goes. Don't increase it too much if you can't handle it. This is exacerbated when you're workforce is educated (at least in the demo)

2. I know you want to build that college for a while now, but there aren't so many college jobs in the demo. Take your time at best.

3. Market places are important too, but trust me that you don't build more than one. You're produce will only either go to the docks or the market place.

4. Make sure you have enough teamsters to carry your produce. It helps to make another Teamsters' Office. It also helps to put a garage nearby. The goods will be sent through trucks instead of wheel barrow.

5. Do not have a massive construction spree. Sure you're income may be steady now, but who knows about tomorrow.

6. Try as much as to have a steady and predictable income.

* Certain information about some buildings in the demo at least

1. Farm. Plant vegetables or fruits or tobacco (That kinda sounded useless), but you can change what you want to plant assuming you don't like what it's planting first.

2. Ranch. Pretty much solves your food problem. It helps to make two or three.

3. Logging Camp. I like this building very much. Unless you're Logging camp is in a very dense jungle. I just have some tips to make it operate longer. Use Take-it-easy and activate horticulture.

4. Fishing Wharf. It's just like a farm. Catch fishes.

For the first four, it is vital to have it at full work-force to have significant exports.

5. Shanty. Don't even buy this as the homeless people can make these for you zero cost.

6. House/ Country House. Classy/ Rural home with very little occupancy.

7. Highrise alternatives. More occupancy. Remember to raise the rent.

8. Lumber Mill. Once you have this, all your Logging Camps will stop exporting and will start transporting there lumber here. The idea here is simple. There should be input storage and output storage. Input storage is the lumber coming from your lumber mill. If this goes to zero, you're Lumber Mill will have no supply and soon no exports. A good way to increase longevity is to take-it-easy. Shortens work hours but may allow logging camps to recover.

9. Cannery. Once you have this, all your fishing wharfs will stop exporting and will start transporting there fish goods here. (I think there's also an effect of this to pineapple and other crops but I'm not sure). Same rules apply, There must be input storage to have output storage.

10. Pubs and Restaurants. To have good balance, it helps to increase the service fees.

11. Childhood Museum. This is nice but I don't think it's worth with the starting salary and the fees can only go so high to balance it out.

12. Cabaret. I like this building. The fee starts at $10. Still, people still go there.

13. Tourist Dock. Don't bother, you won't have tourist in the demo.

14. Teamster's office. Vital to the economy. More teamsters will allow for transportation of more goods to the the docks. As mentioned before, remember to also build a garage.

15. Banks. There are three modes it can work on. The first one will reduce construction cost, the second will send cash to your swiss bank account and the last will generate revenue through transactions from tourists.

16. Police Stations. Recommended to be placed in shanty areas or tenements.

17. Military base. It actually provides housing not only to the soldier but also its family.

18. I haven't built an armory yet but I think that's where they keep the weapons.

19. Statues and Decorations. The first one decreases liberty (Think of statues as Big Brother or something) while the second one increases beauty and reduces pollution (At least that's what the demo says)

20. Highschool. I think this has better use than a college as most of the important education jobs in the demo only needs a highschool diploma.

21. College. Smaller impact than a highschool, but important nonetheless. Clinics, banks and newspaper agencies need a college degree.

22. Clinic. Has three modes: Preventive Medicine, Obstetrics and Gerontology. The first one allows the patient to visit the clinic less often after visit. The second one increases the chance of birth of a mature female. The last one can increase the lifespan of a Tropican.

23. Churches and Cathedrals. Satisfies the religious needs of a Tropican.

24. Market Place. Always build one. At most two.

25. Newspaper agency. There are... I forgot how many modes, but each mode prints newspaper to satisfy a certain group of people or a faction. I would pick the last one which is coupons where you get income by making coupons. It helps if you're newspaper agency is surrounded by a residential area.

To me, EDICTS come next as priority. I'll only be talking about a few EDICTS that have a few underlying implications.

1. FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE. Gives more food for the people but severely drains your exports.

2. LITERACY PROGRAM. Accelerates the education process, but severely drains your uneducated workforce (In the demo, agriculture is your primary source of income).

3. PRAISE US. It helps when the US doesn't like your avatar.

4. US DEVELOPMENT AID. You don't even want to touch this in the demo as it's not even available.

5. ALLIANCE. I would be careful about that.

6. POLLUTION STANDARDS. Reduces pollution, but increases factory maintenance.

Policies.

Immigration office.

Open doors policy. It is useful to increase the population and the workfore. Don't keep it in check though and you could have an overinflux of immigrants building shanties

Skilled workers. Allows the immigration of only skilled workers

Tropico First. Bans immigration except to foreign specialist hired by your government.

Love it or leave it policy. Is useful to control influx of immigration, but becomes a problem if you do not have enough workforce

All policies do not take effect immediately I think.

Diplomatic Ministry

Neutral Policies. Is neither pro nor against USSR or US

Pro-US. Leans more towards US. Better relations with the US. Lower relations to the USSR.

Pro-USSR. Leans more towards USSR. Better relations with the USSR. Lower relations to the US.

*Of course you can have a Pro-US policies and praise USSR at the same time to keep relations at both parties favorable and even excellent.

*Good relations is very much needed for financial aid.

The avatar

It's you. You can walk around. You can visit places and even speed up construction. You can even fight rebels.

I do not think that there is any modding community yet but that game does not need modding in the same way as SimCity-like games.

alas. that's kind of annoying, as the game could use a modding community. it did get good reviews, so i'm sure they'll be enough users to form a site. What I mean though, is that the game, though more limited in scope than sim city, could still accommodate new buildings or car models, etc.

Okay I played the demo for 360 when it first appeared, and as you can tell from my earlier post i was dissapointed. However, a few days ago I installed steam on a new (capable) laptop. I somehow got to the Tropico 3 demo, and started playing. I was hooked, and i spent the whole night plating it. The next day i went and bought the full game (Tropico's too good to pirate!). It's brilliant. It runs so smoothly on my machine (Pentium dual core 2.1ghz, 4gb RAM and ati mobility radeon hd 4570). Although at some points it may become a bit boring (the radio is WAY too repetitive) if you leave for an hour or two (as you're meant to!) when you come back you will become engrossed again. However, the game does feel like the original (+expansion) with 3d graphics and roads. This is not a bad thing though, and there are enough new features to amuse you. Thoroughly worth the money (

Its certainly got a lot of replay value, I got my hands on the 'Absolute Power' expansion a few days ago and the game has sucked me straight back in. The Absolute Power expansion doesn't exactly add much, the most noteworthy addition is the 'Meglomania' Edicts which include stuff like Printing Money (increasing inflation), Outlawing factions, Privatisation and Shooting Juanito (the Radio DJ... made me laugh). There's also the emergence of an annoying Anarchist called 'Betty Boom', she's a DJ like Juanito but her job is to stubbornly oppose everything you do, she gets really upset when you win landslide victories in elections XD. The Campaign that comes with it is MUCH more difficult than the classic campaign.

Yeah, so, I'm back on the Tropico.

Something tells me i should've bought the steam version as they don't sell the retail here. I got my copy from the states and I haven't bought the expansion pack. That means I'd have to get a retail copy of the expansion.

Anyway, I'm just waiting for custom content to appear in this game for me to play it again. I have a good feeling it's gonna come. In the event that it takes a while, someone do tell me if they like posted a site where Tropico 3 CC can be found.

If I remember right, modding for Tropico 3 is technically possible, but officialy restricted. Otherwise, an excellent reboot of a classic.

If anyone is interested, there are a few mods for Tropico 1. Search Google.

To boldly build where no one has built before.
