Today is bonfire night in the United Kingdom, which consists of bonfires, fireworks, drinks and good times. To celebrate the fact that Parliament was not blown up by "Guy Fawkes".

What are fellow Brits upto tonight?

Quiet night in for me... never really do anything on Guy Fawkes. Its tempting to go try blow up Parliament again.. not about religion though... this time its about speed cameras.

Nothing for me. I'll be staying in, hiding from the explosions. I'll be hiding from the fireworks too. I live in a town where fireworks are used as weapons!

I'm exaggerating slightly.

My dog shall be quaking in fear under the stairs or pressed up against the toilet. I doubt I'll do much, maybe watch the Fireworks. Maybe try and take a picture of them.

Did I ever mention (I have, but that's beside the point), that I'm distantly related to two of the plotters? My Mother, being the awesome genealogist she is, traced back our family line back to where it splits to the Wynters. She then traced that branch of the Wynter family..and guess who she found? Thomas Wynter and Robert Wynter!

Holy crap, I forgot about Guy Fawkes Day! Election hype distracted me. Congratulations on the relationship. I found out a couple months ago that I am distantly related to Geogre W. Bush...14.gif

But also Thomas Edison, The Duke, and well countless others, but it doesn't really mean anything to me. It is so distant that it hardly matters at all, except for the fact that it is just cool to say, I suppose.

It's November 5th. I'll be dealing blackjack to a group of Texans that are visiting my casino, and I know they will be *****ing about what they don't like. That's what happened to me yesterday and last week. Oh well, Happy Guy Fawkes Day.

Bonfire Night is the U.K comparitive of "4th July" for Americans. It's a nationwide celebration, celebrating the fact that in 1605 a foiled plot to blow up the entire government in the houses of parliament AND the king of the United Kingdom, by rogue catholic conspirators. One of these (whom was the one who planted and was to set off the gunpowder underneath parliament), Guy Fawkes, was caught red handed on November 5th 1605, under the houses of parliament with the barrels of disguised gunpowder.

yay! Guy Fawkes night. i didnt know this was just a british thing before now...actually i thought it was canadian 3.gif we celebrate it around here in a relatively modest way. backyard fires and community beach fires. Basically an excuse for little towns to burn all their garbage. doors, desks, plywood, drywall....you name it, we burn it!

Actually the current British Houses of Parliament are only 156 years old. The result had he been successful would have total and complete chaos. The King and his family would have been likely killed, most of the British aristocracy and he plot also included the abduction of the Royal children. Most likely a campaign of brutal violence against Catholic (the conspirators were all Catholic), rebellion in the nation and possible civil war...but we'll never know as thankfully they failed and paid the price for attempted to murder the monarch. 4.gif

Although it'd be interesting. What WOULD have happened to the country? As you said, the Royalty would have been killed. Nearly ALL of the aristocracy would have been killed. Nearly all the Lords and Gentlemen..killed. What would the UK be like today?

I dread to think...some horrible republic or the like...*shudder*

All that lost history and colonial rule, the world itself could have possibly been very different.

Present day form, from what i just read about this whole "5th of November" thing that I never heard of before ^^;. I would agree, if the English government took a turn in the wrong direction then what it did, which was..really, invade the colonies. Then there really wouldn't be a revolution. I wonder..how would the United States, or Colonies be like if we were still under English rule. Would we still break away eventually like all of England's other colonies?

And let me get this right...People in Britain celebrate with bon fires and fireworks because some guy, "didn't" blow up the parliament?
