Since when did Norton stop being such a pile of crap? I mean, normally the scans would take 5 hours and also make the computer unusable. Updating took at least half an hour. The program was, well, stupid. Detection was lackluster. And the firewall was useless. Totally different story with NIS09.

Did Symantec realize they were going off the deep-end? 3.gif

No clue, but I do know that I'm still using NIS '05, and it's only given me trouble once... and when it did, a quick email to Symantec customer service fixed the problem.

All around, Norton Intenret Security is a decent program... if you have control over it. I know back before I had my own computer, I hated it since I didn't have administrative privileges with it and when it got in the way of something I simply had to deal.

Now, on my own computer, if it gets in the way of something, I can fix that either by messing with the settings or, if all else fails, by turning the damn thing off temporarily. And all of a sudden the annoyance isn't there anymore. 21.gif

Sure, a full hard drive scan takes several hours, but I think the copious amounts of crap I have saved on my hard drive certainly contribute to that... and it's not a problem. Just let the scan run overnight. 31.gif

Norton did nothing for me, it even said it was too outdated to protect my computer...3.gif

It was time to renew my subscription just a few weeks ago. They offered the upgrade (yes, for free). I declined. Why? A couple reasons.

1) There is absolutely nothing wrong with my '05 copy. And, well, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Last thing I want is to find that NIS '09 doesn't like my computer and screws things up.

2) An upgrade involves taking up additional hard drive space for it. Since I perceive it as unnecessary, this is thus wasted hard drive space... something which I worry about since the size of my hard drive is finite.

What version did you use? I got that with the 2005 version before I wiped it off the hard drive in exchange for AVG.

well i hear alot of bad about norton, though we havent had to many troubles we still got computer problems, i think we've had 3 virues, or spyware programs on the main computer, some even recently.

But the second computer, which im using now, is complete crap. It's a xp and runs slower then 98, and i mostly blame it on the fact my sister before she gave it to me used norton 2004 for 3-4 years with minimal or no updates. I found spyware, trojan, i mean it was totaled, and hasent been the same ever since.

That can easily be fixed by backing up any important data on the computer, reformatting the hard drive (as NTFS of course) and installing a fresh install of Windows XP or Vista.

Norton Virus Scanner came installed on my machine. They gave me a 3 month trial. It was fine until it started consuming more and more resources. I just dumped it for AVG Free Edition.

Norton is the worst anti-virus program I've ever had the displeasure of using and will never go back to it again. Since I dumped the useless program for AVG free edition, I've had zero viruses and zero spyware. Norton doesn't hold a candle to that.

Iv been using Trend Micro Internet Security since i think 2004 when Norton started being a huge resource hog and

charging the same price for online annual renewal as  buying the  newest version at  a store.

Im happy with trends preformance, + its cheaper to buy then norton and cheaper to renew as well.

I've heard a lot about AVG and I was thinking of getting the free edition. But I don't seem to be able to find it. Is it on the AVG site? Is it the 30 trial one? Could you maybe give me a link if I'm in the complete wrong place?

    Thanks!

    Chptrk

    Hi, chptrk,

It can be found here.  I've been running it for a couple months, and it seems to work fine.  I do think I will add Identity Protection.  A  person might want that if they do a fair amount of online transactions.  It is $19.99 per year, and can be found here.

    Bye for now.

Ehh, I don't like Norton, it's always a pain in the butt to deal with.

I use NOD32, it's a great anti-virus program. As for AVGFree - I used it once, didn't like it all that much - also it tended to switch itself off randomly for some reason. Installed NOD32 on that same computer... and it works perfectly.

I use Malwarebytes Pro and AVG Free.

And AVG Free SUCKS. It's let 17 viruses slip past it.

Oh well, at least it gets rid of the tracking cookies.

I've learned something, it is that Norton is actually bad and needs improvments

Right now I would reccomend Windows Live One Care

It's a matter of opinion norton works hard keeping up to date you have to at least give them credit for that.

Actually, it's a matter of fact, not opinion2.gif and I don't have to give anyone any credit they don't deserve, especially when they rip me off.  The program is useless, doesn't 'get' rid/fix viruses like it claims to [false advertising anyone?] and isn't worth amount of money you have to spend to get it.  AVG on the other hand performs flawlwssly and is free.
