The best city skyline for me is Chicago. It has North America's tallest skyline and the only city outside Asia with over five buildings surpassing 300 meters, according to Wikipedia. Most of the lakefront is parkland, so there is a green space between the skyscrapers and Lake Michigan. Not many cities with a waterfront have such an expanse of parkland along their waterfront.  Few skyline views in the world surpass the view of the Chicago skyline from around Adler Planetarium, with Lake Michigan in the foreground and Grant Park between the skycrapers and the lake.

My favourite city skylines are:

Sydney, Australia: a cluster of pretty elegant glas and concrete towers behind the Circular Quay Ferry Terminal/elevated railway station/Cahill Freeway bypass, the Opera House off to one side and Sydney Harbour Bridge. And who can ignore the tall gold topped spike of Sydney Tower?

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan: a bold cluster of skyscrapers thrusting up from an elaborately designed shopping district.

Guangzhou, China: The mainland Chinese have some of the most impressive and intriguing modern architecture, check out CITIC Tower and the new West Tower, and the massive variety of styles applied to apartment complexes here! Sorry, I live in Guangzhou, it's one of my favourite cities......

Paris........... City of Light and Love........... need I say more?

Washington, D.C. Formal, imposing, and a very inspiring Seat of Government.

But one thing, I HATE Hong Kong, it looks cool from a distance, but up close it's a nightmare. The newest skyscrapers are by far the ugliest ones, and the IFC looks like something you can buy in shops that sell toys of *ahem* .......an "adult" nature.......... Also, it sort of built for business, but not really, it has the WORST transport system of any major city of it's size. The trains and trams are slow, the traffic is insane, and by KCR metro it takes longer to get from Central to the border crossing at Shenzhen than it does to take the 200 km/h CRH train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. Oh, and it's a cheap, VERY bad Cantonese rip-off of Tokyo.

Do skylines in certain eras count? =] I'm a huge fan of spires, so my favourites are:

Chicago circa 1927

Koala Lumpur looks fantastic.. the Petronas Towers really stand out as two spires reaching up into the sky.

1. Hong Kong (stunning architecture, and beautiful mountainous backdrop)

2. New York City (such architectual variety, ranges from gothic to modern)

3. Dubai (the almost radical nature of architectual design keeps me interested in what they will come up with next)

4. Kuala Lumpur (love the Petronas complex)

5. Sydney ( I love its modern skyline and the opera house & harbor bridge are a plus)

6. Chicago (Sears Tower and the Hancock Building, just to name a couple of reasons)

7. Seattle (love the Washington Mutual Bldg, the formally named Sea First tower, and the Boeing Bldg, and who can forget the space needle and mountainous backdrop)

8. Dallas (my home city and one of the most modern, glass filled skylines)

9. Toronto (CNN Tower help it to stand out in my mind)

10. Monte Carlo (not your main stream skyscraper complex, but the view of the homes, hotels, mountains, etc from the harbor [including the yachts] is spectacular)

The picture should be no more the 800 pixels wide. It is against forum rules. That's how you destroyed the layout. Just remember to resize pictures bigger than 800px.

I'd agree.  I love Columbus' skyline.  The best is the Leveque Tower, I think.

Though.. i'd still rank NYC above columbus.

Almost is quite vague, they started building it in the 1980's but stopped construction due to either financial problemsor stuctural problems, or simply because of the fact that there's no way they can fill up a 100 plus story hotel tower full of tourists to visit "the properous and flouishing city Pyongyang in North Korea". So since construction stopped, the tower just sits there looming over the city as a giant hulking failure of the communist govenment.

I have to go with the hometown pride here. San Francisco. The city is built to still be on a human scale, so the buildings are short compared to the huge skyscrapers in New York and Chicago. I love the Transamerica building.

Here is my home - the Ottawa Gatineau region:

Ottawa Downtown:

Gatineau Side

3446770352_5b1342be10.jpg?v=0

2490475939_092ecf00ce.jpg?v=0

It looks quite unremarkable compared to all of the others becuase of a local bylaw that says that you can't build towers that would enshadow Parliament Hill - a controversial bylaw to those who want to give Ottawa a distinct skylaw like New York or Toronto.

I like by laws like that and especially appreciate that law in DC i think it gives cities the incentive to build dense urban atmospheres which is the essence that i love about European and Japanese cities and i think bigger is not always better and i think you have a pretty good looking downtown and nice looking capitol building that is given prevalence in the skyline as it should it the center of decision making for a whole country

I don't like it if the tallest skyscrapers look like someone's fingers sticking out of the ground, with only much shorter buildings around them.

Nothing beats my current hometown, Seoul!

I still think new york is great. I just love seeing it as I drive along the Highway towards it...

That makes the city more excellent, I think.  A city with excellent streetscapes are better for for actually going to and visiting, while a city with excellent skylines are better for looking at over the internet or zooming by on the highway.  (Although there are some cities that can achieve both, still, most skyscrapers are only interesting from the ground for a minute or two.)

1. New York-Best in the world....the skyline and the pizza...

2. Chicago-Their pizza is disgusting, there skyline, however, is not.

3. Boston-two different unique skylines, one is a clump plateau of skyscrapers, the other has a few peaks and valleys.

4. Sydney-great skyline

5. Pittsburgh-the view from PNC Park is spectacular

6. Melbourne-sick skyline

7. Vancouver-Looks like hong kong, only prettier.

8. Cleveland-that one tall tower amongst a bunch of bad ones is metaphorical of Lebron James and the Cavs.

Maybe with some effort, Ottawa could achieve both. There`s plenty of construction going on around the back of downtown, recession or not recession (surprisingly enough), and some people want something taller in the city to give it some character. Still, if you go into the city from downtown, it looks like a skyscraper canyon like any other city, only the tallest 20 or so buildings are all about the same height (within 10-15% anyways shortest to tallest), which gives it an interesting effect. The downside is that there are no distinct skyscapers or anything like that.

I`m in favour of abolishing the law and so are many of my neighbours and other city residents.
