thanks for all your comments. It's true that i'm quite proud of my terraforming work. But all the credit goes to the creator of this wonderful island : God. (or whoever you call it, Allah, Shiva, Flying Spaghetti Monster... whatever). I've found a very rough greyscale map on Simtropolis (I don't remember who did it). I had to redraw all the caldeiras and rivers, and spent a lot of time on Google Earth and standard maps. I discovered the map around 2005, and worked on it until 2007. I began writing the CJ at the beginning of 2008. Some updates are ready, but i've only reached 1715 so far. This is gonna be a very long-lasting CJ I think.

    Update 6

I think I've shown you too much. We'll see la Réunion in detail later. Remember the developed monkeys haven't discovered it yet. Let's have just an overview for now.

    300satellitejm7.jpg

La Réunion has the shape of a potato, is about 70 kilometres widewith a perimeter of 220 kilometres. As you see in this satellite picture, rains and swell come from the north-east, like in all tropical islands of the southern hemisphere.

Thus, the western side has a totally different climate and different sea currents. This allowed coral to grow and form a 20-km long coral reef in the west as you've seen in the last picture of update 5.

You can also view it on full satellite photo here.

    3006ha0.jpg

Le Piton des Neiges, as I described before, is surrounded by 3 caldeiras, called “Cirques” in French, with the shape of a cloverleaf. They are formed with the collapse of the older volcano on itself.

    3007be4.jpg

    300photoarienneenclosua7.jpg

Her is a partial view of the Enclos Fouqué (click for full view).

    300enclosfouqulu3.jpg

Le Piton de la Fournaise is different. It collapsed too but lies in one caldeira only, called “Enclos Fouqué”, with the shape of a horseshoe. It has not been eroded yet since it’s too young, unlike Les 3 Cirques who have a very chaotic landscape.

    3008ag1.jpg

Gorges are created by the heavy rains of the region, and are particularly deep and narrow when the rivers that form them come from one of the 3 caldeiras. The highest cliffs are the ones that surround the caldeiras.

That's all for now. Enjoy !

    Update 7

Chapter 1 : Mankind discovers la Réunion (300-1638)

    300xb5.jpg

    peuplementaustronsienhk2.jpg

    632pw4.jpg

    expansionislamfv1.jpg

But they talked a little bit about it. Only around 990 is La Réunion mentioned by some arab merchants. Precisely three islands, who now form the Mascareignes Archipelago : La Réunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues. They called them Dina Morgabim, Dina Arobi and Dina Moraze, (Dina meaning island in arabic)

    1186rj1.jpg

You can see the map full screen here.

But arab sailors didn’t really care either. La Réunion was just a dot on a map.

All that mattered was a new way to India… that avoided the dangerous land routes thru Europe and Middle East.

Many people discovered la Réunion on the way to India. There is no unique discoverer, as often, and the islands of the archipelago had several names throughout history

    UPDATE 9

    CHAPTER 2 : First Settlement (1638-1663)

For centuries, no one really cared about la Réunion, until 1638.

    and guess who arrives???

    1638a.jpg

    1638b.jpg

(note to purists : the blue-white-red French flag didn’t exist in 1638. In fact it was a plaque dedicated to the Louis XIII. And I couldn’t find any lot with the French flag on the stex, so I had to photoshop sumthin.)

The French cared about la Réunion for several reasons. First, it was virgin. Secondly, it was on the way to India. And thirdly, it was close to Madagascar where France already had a colony (Fort-Dauphin), and projected to expand there with La Réunion as an off-shore base. But the French didn’t settle immediately.

    1642j.jpg

But again, the french didn’t settle immediately. Le Réunion was still desert. The French were more focused on settling on Madagascar.
    1646i.jpg

    1649a.jpg

Yeah, they wanted to stay. Even if there was no woman. 42.gif

Oh, WOW, this is outstanding! I just went through your updates and I must admit this is coming along greatly. Not only was it such a good idea of yours to incorporate the dinosaur thing (and you are right: it seems to be very unlikely that they could/ should not have evolved any further... 2.gif ) , but also you made an excellent choice of pictures. This whole content is really well thought of, congrats.

Moreover, you have been doing a beautiful layout to the island so far, pimped with all these special effects. Really great job!

Would you mind calling me a fan? Looking very, very much forward to more,
