its nice. i like how you have more buildings now and it looks good.

your suburbs however need more variety in your housing. its pretty much the same.

those town houses are alright its just you look at it for 5 secs and get it.. theres nothing really too look at for long if uno what i mean.

your farms are pretty kool.

yuor region view is nice though so keep it up.

    Teaser3.jpg

    Yes, that's right.  Another teaser!

Since my last teaser update New Gelderland has joined the A.F.D.E.S.  Calder City has been nominated to host the first summit of the new union.

    As a result I've been developing a new area, so the town I teased you with will be completed at a later time.  So, without further ado;

The National Cultural Centre for New Gelderland  - Landing site.

    Summitlandingsite.jpg

This is the area where International leaders and VIP's can arrive in their helicopters or ships.  The wharf you can see was built to aid construction projects on the island (maps to follow in the next update of the area) which include the NCC plateau plaza, an amusement park and various hotels and entertainment buildings.  The island is also home to several small population centres around a beach resort town.

The island is a popular destination for many New Gelderlanders, especially those from the City of Hamilton and Calder City metropolitan areas.  Situated only a few miles from the edges of both cities, the island is ideal for day breaks or short stays.  The island is also popular with international visitors arriving at the new airport!

The next time I update properly it should be part of a series of large updates covering all the latest developments!

    Repliesbanner2.jpg

I realise these replies are a little late now, Apologies.  I'll try to reply more often.  I do read all the responses regularly, but I previously felt I should save replies until I update.  I think I was wrong.

Tia-may: I'm glad you like the farms. I've been spending a lot more time on them recently.  I think they're very important for the region picture.

crazyarchitect: Thanks.  I'm sorry I have to delay the full update on that one!  I hope you like the AFDES summit coverage and the airport update to come instead!

spore415: I'm flattered!  Thanks indeed.  I hope I can keep you interested!

deathtopumpkins: Oops.  You got me!  Those houses should have back gardens!  That's an oversight.  There's no way to explain it away, and it takes forever to grow houses in that way (it was an experiment).  They'll have to stay as 'affordable townhouses'.

You're right about British gardens (or rather your mum is).  They used to grow a lot of food during and after the war.  British people have always historically cherished their gardens... until now that is!  Most people pave over them nowadays for off-street parking.  Soon though we'll have to get planning permission to do that, so maybe things will get back to normal. It seems global warming for us has brought more rain than scorching heat!  The last two summers have been complete washouts, and garden paving has been partly blamed for flash flooding from groundwater runoff.  It's caused millions of pounds worth of dammage and left many people temporarily homeless!

I'm not too sure about custom farms yet.  Ive looked at them, but some of them seem very garish.  I'd like something that expands on and compliments what Maxis made though!

    That was a long one!

Ntq$310: Thanks!  It was an experiment that I don't think i'll repeat too often.  It takes forever!

Archean: Thanks, i'm glad you like what you've seen!  I think i'll ammend your statement and say that - there are tens of sights that i've planned!!!  I do have lots of ideas (for the nation, region and the city), but i'm showing them as I complete them, with the exception of the airport which is ready to show!

Godzillaman: I guess then that by the next update you'll like everything!  I took your advice and got a new train skin.  I haven't seen it yet because i'm working in a paused city, but hopefully it'll show soon.

fabsies55: I'm glad you like my changes.  With respect to your comment about the suburbs; that, i'm afraid is to do with architectural culture!  We're starved of real variety in Britain.  We don't really have suburbs in the American sense (I guess though that you are Portuguese?).  All out of town suburban housing tends to be built by the same developers to look like everything else around them.  We're stuck in a loop.

The town houses: again, that's something else that's a reflection of where I live.  I live on a street of row homes in fact, surrounded by dozens of other similar rowhome streets!  The difference however is that some of them have individual renders on the facade, so I take your point.

disturbman: Thanks.  You'll probably get tired of waiting for this CJ before long!  I'd be glad, as ever,  of your patience though, and that goes for all of you 9.gif

That wharf and pier are looking awesome, and I'd say the houses are fine! I mean, you're not really replicating a british city, just a made up one.

Sucks about your weather! We're getting no rain and heat, heat, heat here!

Calder city is really impressive. Great work with your city planning and development. I love how you have many clusters of mid density development amid all the low density sprawl. I also like the way you worked with the sunken highways and rail networks.

    This is officially - Update 7 - and it's a big one!

    Introducing...

    regiontop.jpg

    regionbot.jpg

    EntireCitytile.jpg

Southwell Island | Home of the New Gelderland International Seminar Centre: The AFDES September Summit.

Southwell Island lies to the south of Calder City and to the south east of Hamilton.  The island is a major tourist attraction for the region of Hamilton County and is home to a large number of international hotels which dominate the skyline of the town of Southwell.  There is also a theme park, 3 private beaches, a pier & waterfron complex, forest reserve and the New Gelderland International Seminar Centre (known as the NGISC or locally as the ISC).

The NGISC is the regular site of the summits of the Alliance of Fuel Developing and Exporting States (AFDES), a union of states of various sizes dedicated to, amongst other things, matters of energy and the trade of energy.  As the union's largest state (by population), New Gelderland has been chosen to host the inaugral summit.

The NGISC will host 1 in every 2 of the AFDES summits held in New Gelderland.  The other New Gelderland summits will be held at various beauty spots around the island nation.

I think that's enough words for now.  I'll begin by showing more of the island before moving into the NGISC.  Stay tuned for something extra at the end of the update!

    Southwell West End:

    Southwell East End:

    SouthwellEastEnd.jpg

Southwell North & Edge of the forest:

    Southwellnothendforest.jpg

    Focus on hotels...

Many of these hotels are also entertainment centres.  Some also feature as hotel casinos, though none are as loud as the ones in Las Vegas!  There are also many nighclubs, dancehalls, resteraunts and bars contained within the hotels.  Many of them are open to the non staying public.

Four of the most popular & higest priced internationals:

    Hotel5678.jpg

    A small resort:

2 other large hotels of medium wealth:

The unfinished building is an old version of one of mine.  I was going to replace it with a construction lot but forgot.  I'd already exited the gabe before I realised, sorry.

A lower wealth hotel.  The upper level suites are well renowned:

    A wooded retreat:

The AFDES September Summit: Southwell Island

The summit commences today.  Some of the issues to be discussed by the leaders of the ten member states include finalising the initial goals of the alliance, and more inaugaration business.  Outcomes will be posted in the public thread at a later date.  Here i'll foucus on the area of the summit, and its non AFDES functions.

    NGISC in relation to Southwell:

    AFDESSummit-Sitetown.jpg

The NGISC site viewed from the south: The site 3 main buildings are situated on a plateau above the coast and are surrounded by parkland on the lower level.  The park is populated by trees, and is threaded with formal trails.  Visitors are invited to melt into the trees during recesses of events.

Viewed from the East: The NGISC currently prepped for the September AFDES summit, featuring the alliance's flags (currently only New Gelderland and the Follomer Chancellry have flags)

The debating chambers - view 1: All of the main issues will be discussed in this open and transparent building.  The leaders will be able to end discussions with a view of the famous Southern New Gelderland Autumn sunsets.  This building is also used for key lectures and speeches when other events come to the NGISC.

The NGISC - Main Seminar building: This building houses 3 large lecture theatres and various smaller conference arenas and exhibition spaces.

    AFDESSummit-NGIntlSeminarCentre.jpg

The Museum of New Gelderland - International Exhibition spaces: This large building hosts international travelling exhibitions, promoting all sorts of cultural industries to culturally hungry New Gelderlanders.

    AFDESSummit-MNGInternationalExhibit.jpg

The NGISC has it's own capacity for arrivals: There is a small, infrequently used harbour that can, as you've already seen, handle large cruise liners.  A more common sight is the docking of medium sized cruisers and yachts.  Some of the leaders of the AFDES chose to arrive here by sea.

    Boatsinharbour.jpg

The Heliport: At large events, including the AFDES summits, the NGISC park has the capacity to accept helicopter arrivals.  The port has temporary housing for visitors' craft.  Most commonly, the heliport facilitates the arrival of short hops from Calder City and the city of Hamilton.  On rare occasions, international arrivals are directly received at this facility.

    chopperatheli.jpg

The main entrypoints for the island are by road and rail.   The island is connected by 2 roadbridges and 1 rail bridge.  Many New Gelderlanders arrive at the island this way. Many of the international visitors, and those from the further regions of New Gelderland also use these bridges, but first they arrive at.......

    Hamilton & Calder International Airport:

    airportzoomfurther.jpg

The not so eagle eyed of you will have noticed the airport already in the region view.  This is the "something extra" I asked you to stay tuned for!

The airport has 3 runways.  The smaller one, West, is for domestic & short haul jets only, and is used by terminal 3. It cannot handle the larger planes (BTW, I know nothing about planes and airports.  I'm blagging all this.  I know the airpot isn't realistically accurate, I merely wanted to create something that would look realistic to laymen like me!!).

The South runway can handle 747s, and flights depart and arive to and from locations all over the world.  The South runway is used by Terminals 2 & 3.

The North runway handles similar flighs to the South runway.  More jumbo jets use this runway however.  It is also able to handle planes larger that 747s such as the A380.  The North runway is used by Terminals 1 & 4.

    airportzoomfar.jpg

The airport is inspired by London Heathrow (although it looks nothing like it now!).  The runways and terminals surround the transport hubs.  The centre of the airport houses several large related office buildings. In this picture you can see; clockwise from top left; Terminals 4, 1 & 2.

    Runway intersections:

    South-Westrunwaycrossing.jpg

    North-Westrunwaycrossing.jpg

I plan a further update of the airport in the future when I complete the tile.  It will include transport maps and airport maps as well as more pictures and maybe some improvements, particularly to the developments in the centre.  The update should also feature the large container seaport that will be built across the bay.

PS: You'll see in the region view that I've moved the rail bridge south to improve the landing angle (from the south) to the West runway.

There you go!  That was a big one!

deathtopumpkins: Thanks.  Our weather's picked up a bit of late.  It's still not warm  Summer is officially over (near enough), and wind is coming!  I hate wind, although you guys across the pond  have to deal with a bit more than a light gale every now and then!

edmonton_stinks: Thanks.  The update is here!  I hope you enjoyed this one too.

    jacqulina: Thanks.

fabsies55: Thank you!  I've always wanted to visit Portugal.  I'm a Manchester United fan, so I'm also a fan of certain Portuguese!

selles: Thanks.   I'm glad you think Calder City is well planned!  It's the first time i've tried to build this way.  I've also learned an incredible ammount about attention to detail whilst maintaining this CJ.   I don't think i can bring myself to look back on the cities I built before!

fabsies55: You again! lol. Sorry, I know I said I'd try to post here more often.  I've been really busy this week preparing the above update! I hope you like it.

Ntq$310: Hello and thanks!  I'm glad you liked this update.  The quantity of pictures feels like an update of Flint!  It's taken me all day to prepare this update! I don't know how you do it so often!  The summit can start now!

CraigKingOfIreland: Thanks!  I'm proud of my airport.  It was a long time coming.  It's the first time i've fully completed and been reletively happy with an international sized custom airport!

I almost contacted you in your logo service thread whilst I was making the AFDES logo above!  You're providing a great service there, and it might come prove useful in the future.  It's something i'm trying to learn myself.

jacqulina: Thanks again!  I'm happy you like the beaches.  I've never used them before now.  I've been making an effort to take more time on my coastal and forested areas lately.

WOW this is looking absolutely AMAZING!!! I am seriously envious of that region view, it looks so realistic. The AFDES & NGISC complex look really nice as well, thats an interesting little union you have there.

The airport looks really realistic, I can see some of the similarities. BTW where is New Gelderland located?

"a bit more than a light gale every now and then"   You have no idea...Just two days ago we got hit with the worst storm the area's seen in years, and it wasn't even tropical! It was just a nor'easter, but it had about a 4 foot storm surge up the river I live on, so the water barely missed my house, and I can't remember the last time I saw that much rain... 6.gif And just today the temperature keeps fluctuating by about 20 degrees F every couple minutes, as just 20 minutes ago it was chilly with dense fog, and now it's 83 degrees, sunny, and humid! It's the end of summer in Virginia!

I like storms though, so I'm fine as long as my house survives. And wind sounds cool in the chimney...

    About the update:

    • That was huge!
    • The island looks great, and those hotels look very inviting. I think I'd like a room in the center one in that shot of four.
    • And that beach by the single resort looks really nice... 44.gif
    • Ahhh... I can smell the cotton candy from here! Excellent theme park!
    • The little towns are cute too... I especially like the mansions out on that peninsula.
    • I love the resort complex too, and soon hopefully a Virgin Shores flag will join the Follomerian and Gelderlanian (sp?) flags.
    • Looks like you've got a broken mosaic there though...
    • Ahhh... there's my yacht!
    • The airport looks great too! I've tried building my own, but they always end up an utter failure, so I've given up and stuck to the Maxis airports.
Excellent update, and I am looking forward to tomorrow.

One last question though, would you mind if I photoshopped a logo out of that flag thing for us to put in out sig banners, like in the corner? I'll post in the private thread when I'm done.

Amerikaner: Thanks indeed!  I'm really glad you like the region view.  It's what I always intend to build towards, the perfect region view.  I still have lots to do there though.  I'm also pleased you like the airport, thanks.  New Gelderland is located aroung 500 miles off the Western coast of Australia.  There's some maps on page 5!

JJC12321: Thanks.  It's not used a great deal yet.  It's made functional by placing several airport tram tiles, but it's seeing use of only about 5%.  Once the region grows around it, particularly the city of Hamilton, that should go up a bit.  In fiction though, yes it's used a ton!

deathtopumpkins: My that's a long post.  It looks like one of mine!!  We normally get our weather from the east coast of North America, so it might be the tail end of the same storm!

Would that be the hotel on the beach, or the tall one with the rooftop plaza?

It would just be "...New Gelderland flags."

I fixed the mosaic, it was an invisible 'space' before the second picture.

Indeed, that was intended to be your yacht!  I had to make a specific lot, and the overhanging prop overhangs too much, so I couldn't get it to dock perfecly at the wharf.  Nobody's claimed the other ship, or the helicopter yet, and I couldn't feature any landing planes at the airport as I couldn't find the plane props! So it looks like you are the only one who has 'visibly arrived'!

You need lots of patience with custom airports, and lots of city funds.  I cheat.  The airport I've built costs upwards of 40,000 per month I think, and would not be sustainable with normal play.  I'd suggest starting very small if you wanted to make one for Virgin Shores.  Then let your ambitions grow with confidence.

Go ahead and photoshop the logo.  It's fine by me.  If you want any of the files (PSD, CorelDraw) just let me know.  If you need help making a flag too, i'd be happy to try.

    CraigKingOfIreland: I agree completely.

SimHoTToDy: Thanks!  I'd be happy to see you back.  I'm glad you like the NGISC.  It took a while to plan!

SirUnger: Thanks a lot!  More should be coming soon'ish.  I have a little more time on my hands now this update is out of the way.  The next one should be smaller and easier to prepare!

    jacqulina: thanks.

heeheehee... payback for all your long replies! 3.gif

I doubt it, as it came at us from the northeast.

Ah, that would probably be right.

It looks fine! So what if it's not exactly on the dock? Aren't there lots in some of the airport packs on the STEX that have plane props?

Heh, cheating's not a problem--I use "Moolah" quite a lot. Though VS is still running just fine off of that 500,000, which has actually grown to 800,000! I make a lot of money. 2.gif

Well, I tried cropping and shrinking it to fit on a 300x50 banner, and couldn't get it to still be readable.. What do you think it would look like with the AFDES superimposed over the planet? I think that would look best, at least for the sig version, but I don't have the capabilities to really do that... as I'm working with Paint and a few other standard windows programs, though I'm in the process of figuring photoshop out at my school in my GIS class, and might eventually see if I can bring some stuff in there after class to work on...

And I'd love to see what you could come up with for a flag

Update 8 - The Calderfields Redevelopment Project

It's been a while, but here it is; update 8.  I don't want to fill this post with excuses, but needless to say i've been working on other things to do with New Gelderland.  Now, on with it....

Anyone remember Calderfields? It was the first developed area of Calder City.  You can see more of the old Calderfields in the first post of the first page, but for the sake of flow, here's a refresher pic:

    Constructiontown-update.jpg

This area was created mainly for the construction workers who laid the first foundations of the city.  Now, Calder City has matured enough to find the need to redevelop some of these first settled areas.   Calderfields has in fact, always been scheduled for re-development at this stage.  Homes and businesses in the area have always been on a temporary lease.  Displaced occupants were contractually entitled to a generous 5% above the would be market value in return for guaranteed vacancy.

The area was promptly cleared, new infrastructure laid, and zones plotted awaiting independent development:

    Calderfields-Predevelopmenttop.jpg

    Calderfields-Predevelopmentbottom.jpg

The main improvements were to transit and density.  The rail line was sunken, and new overpasses made.  Roads were re-laid in a more efficient way in readiness for higher density living, and new schools, parks and health facilities were built.

18 months later, and a refreshed district was established:

    Calderfieldsoverviews2.jpg

The Calderfields district extends to the main rail lines out of the city to the north, and the highway to the East.

    Calderfieldsoverviews1.jpg

    Calderfields District Park:

    Calderfieldspark.jpg

And finally, a nice, big, juicy mosaic of the area featuring: Dunhill Road Shopping, Arthur Dunhill High School and its playing fields, Calderfields station and Zamora University Clinic:

    Calderfieldsmosaicatop.jpg

    Calderfieldsmosaicmid1.jpg

    Calderfieldsmosaicmid2.jpg

    Calderfieldsmosaicmid3.jpg

    Calderfieldsmosaicmid4.jpg

    Calderfieldsmosaiczbot.jpg

And that concludes the update!  The good news is; I already have the pictures taken for update 9!  I simply need to edit them.  There are a couple more juicy mosaics and night shots of the latest buildings in the CBD, and brand new overviews of the city.  That update should be up in a few days.  I don't want to hit you with two updates in quick succession after a long period of waiting.  It feels good to be ahead!

One last thing;  I would like a bit of help.  You've probably already noticed by now, but I have a road texture problem:

    roadtextures1.jpg

    roadtextures2.jpg

I have a conflict somewhere I guess, but I haven't been able to find the culprit.  Anyone who recognises this and can give me a solution gets a prize in a future update!

I could just remove the Euro textures mod, and revert to american textures, but I like the Euro ones too much.

to Tyler26101: Welcome!  I hope you like the update.  The airports require a lot of downloads and a lot of practice.  They add (i've not counted) around a hundred icons to your airport menu.  Maybe more.  Search: RMIP in the stex, and download all of the files named RMIP.  When you search RMIP you also get ACB VLT Terminals and Jets Series, which you'll need.  There are a few other things that will be on that list which you might want too.  Be sure to read all the readmes for links to extra files and dependencies that I might have forgotten about.

    Thanks for the Welcome Party!!!

And thanks, but I found the pieces about an hour after I posted that.

Calderfield: Reborn should be the title of this update. And very nice mosaic! And I guess Arthur Dunhill is important...

on the problems. The texture conflict on turn lanes i think is impossible to fix i believe, but with the other problems in the second pic i have no idea, it could be left turn lane plugin.
