What do you think about Germany?

I think, that germans are very proud of their nation. Personally I am a patriotic german, too. It wasn't our generation, which did these bad things from 1933 to 1945. After the aweful 68er generation which was against every kind of patriotism, it is now time for younger generations to change the german image.

I hink, that german cities are very interessting. Although here aren't any real big cities, we have many different styles. Cities like Frankfurt have a good infrastructure and modern buildings because of the bombing during wwII. Everything had to be built up, so that it was a chance to develop am modern city which is just build for modern life.

I am a German-American with several relatives from Germany.

My aunt for instance (Helga) was born in BERLIN in the 30's and her family lost their company because of Hitler's censoring (They owned a print-n-press)

I loved Germany when I was there. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. and I love Frankfurt!!!

I don't get why so many people just instantly refer to Germany as a Nazi state. No one there is actually like that. Infact its Illgeal. There are more Nazis in the US.

Hi,

first off, I would propose that this should be transferred to Simtropolis related.

Regarding the generation of '68 : honestly, I don't think that it was soo bad, as there were reflections about the past, political situations and regimes, new creative attempts concerning society, art, etc. (I was born in '78 , so I am not part of the '68 movement lol). Movements like this are vital for every society IMO

Sure, it's always up to young people to change their countries image, moreover it's absolutely important to be open for any cultural exchange, thus also dealing with different stereotypes.

Well, yes, I do think that Germany has some big cities, e.g. Berlin. Not only populationwise, but also art-wise.

I am writing this in English, although I am Austrian and there's at least a common language we share, because I don't want to do a translation (honestly) and would like to keep it open for other readers and commenters.

So, neighbor, take care,

lucky7

oh yea the german language... the most-spoken language in europe with about 130million, and still not at all involved in the official european languages (french and english that is)

a shame...

EDIT: but what do you expect from a union that was, initally, formed to keep the post-ww2 germany on its knees

Germany is of course a great country! It's history is perhaps what makes it so great, even though there has been some "dark" times like mentioned here before.. Deutschland, wooohoo! 4.gif

If I think of Germany it always reminds me of something like this:

Southern Germany

This are the built-up areas of southwestern Germany and although quite abstract, this is the kind of image that crosses my mind... probably too much SC 4.gif

Funny, the threads that crop up here. Since I was born there (although I am the first & last German in the clan), I guess I have an opinion. It is not a very favourable one, hence I live in Brussels, a mere two hours by hi-speed rail.
Still, I owe it my education, perchance the most thourough outside of Japan and Korea. Since I am part of the earlier quote 68 generation, I did not face the problems of German students today; our only problem was - if you actually wanted to study in West Berlin - that the radicals tried everything to keep you from it.
But while nowadays it is a largely placid country, its post-war history is pockmarked by the likes of Baader-Meinhof and the Red Army faction. It is tainted by the election of one Joshka Fisher to Foreign Minister, and by a Green Party that at one time featured several Paris 68 would-be revolutionaries leading the Green Party. And it now can claim the "proud" fact that it has the largest grouping of neo-nazis ruining the eastern streets of the country.
I for one don't subscribe to the idea that a country should only be judged by its past - what happened before 1945 could have happened with equal speed and results in any other European - and did happen, albeit to a lesser degree, in Russia.
But the present and the possible future give me pause to think. And I am glad that other nations in Europe are barring Germany from taking too much of the lead in Europe - I for one would rather not see history repeat itself - in any shape or form.
In the meantime - I am staying out.

thats exactly what a GI did a couple of weeks ago, a mere 2 or 3 days after his arrival in germany. cuz, you know, germany is the country without speed limits on the highway.

the result: car accident -> death

his fellow friends suggested he didn't know that the "no speed limit on german highways" is more a fairytale than a fact, taken that only a small percentage of the entire net has no speed limit and most of the net has limits between 50 and 75 mph

I mean, I was driving far beyond 160mph as well on the autobahn here, on a sunday morning with like 2 cars on the road, me and someone going the other direction.

apart from that, I kick it on the racetrack, there's plenty of them in germany, I live about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the green hell and the hockenheimring, and thats about the average time one could live away from a racetrack in germany, so there's enough possiblity to play pedal to the metal without seriously harming anyone.

because, to be honest, the main problem on german highways are on the one hand the slow-driving ones that occupy the middle and/or left lane without realising that they block the other, faster traffic, and on the other hand those who dont give a sign when changing lanes or change them without checking for other traffic first,  what many researches have proven already. I mean, 100mph or more on the highway wouldn't be that much of a problem if there wasnt a granny or another scared-to-hell-from-driving-on-the-highway-fool that takes it to unbelievable 40mph on the leftmost lane of a 3lane highway (actually, on a 3lane highway, you must do at least 55mph to drive on the leftmost lane in most cases, definitely when there's no speed limit) without realizing cars beyond her hood and trunk. and then a vw passat sw or an audi s8 appear in their rearview mirror and they wipe out because they're spooked from realizing that there's more cars than their own on the road

I honestly hate the idea where they place germany into different sides, e.g East west. It shouldn't happen.

funny to read what u all know about Germany

Poverty ? we are the richest country in Europe and we are on top of the world ( member of G8 ), we are the best americanized country outside US :-)

(i hate that fact)

proud of our nation ?, yes there are some people living somewhere in the past mostly we are europeans and we think european and we think that the EU is the future as well we founded it with france.

we are only proud if we win the succer world or Eu championchip ( last we lost), on other hand we are open to the world and the time of we are GERMANS is over . We have no oil we can live from so we live from our work and with that we are the world leader in export ( cars and so on )

We are so i think that a real free country where u can really say and think what ever u want, free religion and so on.

If u like visit Germany from west to east from north to south and see WE ARE NORMAL NOTHING SPECIAL

History WILL repeat itself, because people think Communism and fabian socialism are somehow not as bad as fascism. And because most people don't know socialism is a product of globalism (google it).

cmon buddy, start thinking. the highlighted part is exactly what supported Hitler in taking over the lead in Germany (although to a different extent nowadays)

Post WW1 Germany was kept on it's knees by France&Co and after some time the German were sick of it.

And then an austrian that severed as a low-end communications guy that received a promotion to private in WW1came and promissed to lead Germany out of the oppression... exactly what the people wanted...

Well, a lot about what pissed Hitler off, as well as the German people, was what happened after WWI. They were devastated... even if rightfully so. And then, oh hello, Poland... you say you don't have any ports? Here is some land that used to be German... its yours... take it. Germany doesn't need it anymore. Germany was pissed off, that's why they built up such a big army and invaded Poland... but the whole holocaust thing though... totally the work of a madman...

actually, that's an urban legend. the US doesn't have an official language, and just uses english as a de facto one. and in fact it was just a petition petition to have some laws translated into german.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhlenberg_legend

hmmm ? to a lesser degree? How so? 20+ million dead Russians and numerous gulag concentration camps, how is that lesser?quote>

well, the second world war in europe killed 30-40 million people. and while the collective farm system killed millions - at least in part due to gross incompetence - the soviets never actually had factories for killing people 3.gif

oh yea the german language... the most-spoken language in europe with about 130million, and still not at all involved in the official european languages quote>

actually, i'll think you'll find that there are twenty official EU languages, and that germany is among them. english makes sense, since it's the most widely understood language, while the locations of all the EU 'capitals' are in french-speaking areas.

btw, i'm 1/4 german 4.gif
