    Railyards in Your Cities
Although SimCity4 is not Railroad Tycoon, we can still do a lot to make our industrial areas look a lot more realistic by ensuring there is lots of rail near them. Sometimes realistic-looking building in SimCity means ignoring the transportation algorithms in SC4 and just building what looks good!

Railyards as depicted below in Digby's Wentworth, are about the best we can do in SC4. The double-only track and spacing isn't ideal, but it still fits the bill. You will undoubtedly have a lot of places like this in your realworld city. Railyards can take up many square miles in a real city, especially if it is a transportation hub.

    Spur Lines
If you have a drive along your industrial areas of your realworld city, you will also find lots of spur lines, which run alongside many industries. These are stub lines, and stop at a dead end. Goods are loaded here, and they serve as small railyards themselves.

Below, you will see a couple of spurs in Harford.

    In Granton
I have done some railroad building in Granton, also. Below you'll find that town's current rail configuration. Note also that I have added a seaport. Finances in Granton are now only slightly in the black with this new seaport, so I'll have to do some building soon to increase the tax base.

    /idealbb/files/Railyard-Granton01.jpg

In the picture below, you'll see more clearly the rail near the seaport. Note also that I try to keep railroads as level as possible. It was a little harder here, because the seaport is at a fixed level and getting too close to it with the level tool will demolish it!

WOW! i cant believe how much work you put into this, especially your own areil views of the region and all. This one stands out to me cause its not a huge metropolitan like many others have....its more like a nice rivery kansas that will be great to retire to lol. Keep up the great work.

You may have already mentioned this, but do you separate your commuter and freight rail lines? Correct me if I'm wrong, but when rail first came into existence both types of transportation used the same tracks.

Ok, to make it short and simple: best city journal ever, in my opinion.

The region is also great, I love the attention to detail, realism and countryside feel of the whole thing. How come I've never seen this before? Congratulations!

I like how you describe each town and it's qualities, and the view of the region is spectacular! It's so great I can't describe it!9.gif9.gif9.gif9.gif

This region's layout and initial development marks you out as someone who has a sound knowledge of urban development (along with all your tips and tidbits), and even at this stage I think you'd be strong competition to many taking part in the Most Beautiful City competition. You're to be commended on the fact that although we are now on the third page of this CJ, almost NO building has taken place since the original post, and yet everyone is still rapt with its development.

And finally, it's presentation. This must have taken almost as long as the city-building itself, and because this is your first foray into SC4, as long as you don't spoil it for yourself by playing another region on the side, I think that you will continue to maintain the high level of dedication to your region that you've delivered so far.

This is a model CJ, and I shower you with bunnies!!!!!

    Our First City Development Update!
Now that we've been acquainted with the main cities of Digby Region, and some of the smaller towns, it's time to start building. There is a lot to build (and there are only so many hours in a day) so we'll start slowly.

Our first update will take us to Grande Forkes, nestled along the beautiful Dananagua and Lewis Rivers. Development updates will all be formatted like the one below:

Newly developed areas are shown in bright red. New roads, streets, and avenues are shown in dark red. The legend on the right of the graphic will help you to understand the maps.

The new development projects are numbered, and will be detailed by these numbers in the posts following the main development post.

    New Development Detail
    Grande Forkes - Area 1

New development is usually shown in three stages (A, B, and C) so you can see the effect of development. Breakdown is as follows:

    A - Prior to construction
B - Construction and new zoning underway
C - Completed area shown after the area has settled in

Refer to the map above if you lose your orientation!

    /idealbb/files/Area1a.jpg

    /idealbb/files/Area1b.jpg

    /idealbb/files/Area1c.jpg

After a time, this area will be sure to develop nicely. Property values are sure to increase. And, hopefully, the newly-planted trees will grow, too!

This is an awesome region. I really like the effect of the farmland on the appearance of the region. Look forward to seeing where the development is going to lead.

    New Development Detail
    Grande Forkes - Area 2

The following development takes places on the west end of Grande Forkes just north of Forkes Rd, close to one of the city's three main industrial areas. Note that I don't keep industry away from cities such that they are not in the same city area in the sim. There is always some industry fairly close by, as there usually is in the realworld.

Notice how the city has made a concession with the private developer and has removed an offensive dirty plant that would have been near the proposed neighbourhood (Cdn spelling!). They have put a park in its place. A new street was added, Sherk Street. And, of course, the city has not forgotten to plant trees!

Don't forget to check the New Development map a few posts above to orient yourself for Area 2 on the Grande Forkes map.

Low-wealth light-residential housing doesn't look that good in a region that deserves more beauty. Try setting the taxes so that medium wealth can come in. They also help raising the demand for more desireable industries. Other than that, I hope to see more updates on the rest of the region!

How Do I Make All These Goofy Graphics?
Quite a few people have been asking me about the graphics used in this journal. So I'll let give a brief overview on how they are created.

    Short Version: Adobe PhotoShop!

Long Version: I make screen captures using the in-game snapshot feature, and where this won't work, a great little screen capture program called HyperSnap.

Once I have the capture, I immediately move the graphics into PhotoShop. Adobe PhotoShop is one of the most powerful programs on the market, arguably the best paint program, and certainly the industry standard for professionals. Few people, myself included, have really mastered it (I would bet I know about 60% of what the program can really do).

Once inside PhotoShop, the graphics are cropped, sized, and the layers for text bubbles and other things are added. There is far too much to do in PhotoShop to explain here, but if you're serious about graphic design, you must learn this program. It is also the program you will use to create new and realistic textures for the BAT!

The graphic must be no larger than 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels tall (72 dpi), but as a courtesy to Simtropolis it is greedy to make them all this big, and thus many are smaller.

The last step is to use the PhotoShop's Save for Web feature to save the graphics as a JPEG and keep the file size under 150KB. I cut it pretty close with some graphics at 146KB, but again, I try to keep the graphics as small as I can without losing to much detail.

And that's it. No HTML. No magic. Just a little manipulation with help from my friends at Adobe!
