This is a marvellous city journal... It's the mark of a good journal when it actually influences it's readers outside of itself, and this one has... I'm now starting to consider the beginnings of my city as important as it's development... Thankyou, lewellan...

And BTW... red AND BLUE lights?!?! Where did those come from?

Dirty Industry, Low-Income Residents, and Digby
A lot of readers have asked about the role of dirty industry and low-income housing in Digby, so I thought I'd say a few words on this.

Many players of SimCity4 prefer to erradicate dirty industry and the low-income residents who work there. Indeed, gameplay allows you to do this, and this is a goal that can be worked toward.

But in Digby, I am endevouring to create as realistic a region as I know how, so dirty industry and low-income residents are an important part of it.

In fact, I actually intentionally design low-income housing and less-than-ideal spots to live in. Think about your own real-world city or town; surely you can name several areas where there is low-income housing and not-so-pretty industries. Every city has these elements, and it's important for me to keep them in the region. Of course, there are lots of nice, high-end places to live in Digby, but not everyone can afford to live in a mansion.

Variety of housing and industry is not only realistic, it adds a contrast and flavour to the game that I think makes it quite enjoyable. Our world is not pristine, and although SC4 allows one to create a near-perfect world, I think it's more interesting if it is not!

Digby and the Building Architecture Tool
Now that the Building Architecture Tool (BAT) is out for SC4, things are going to be a little different here in the Region of Digby.

I'll start off by sayingthat  the BAT, with its ability to create custom structures for SimCity4, is the most influential thing to happen to the sim since Rush Hour, and perhaps even more so. I simply cannot contain my excitement at the aspect of hundreds, even thousands, of talented virtual architects around the world creating scrumptuous buildings to add to our miniature worlds!

Already, I can see some up-and-coming artists out there doing their part to bring variety and realism to SC4 with their fantastic creations. The possiblities are endless!

BAT Structures Appearing in Digby? - I've already said that Digby is a retail-only version of SC4, with no mods or cheats, and it will remain so. However, I fully intend to incorportate custom BAT creations into Digby, as they represent an entirely different aspect of the SC4 world.

I will carefully chose structures that I think match the detail and quality that Maxis has used in their own structures. A custom BAT building should blend seamlessly into the SC4 world, and that will be the criteria upon which structures are selected.

You'll know when a new BAT structure is being added to Digby when you see the following logo:

    /idealbb/files/BAT-Logo1.jpg

The logo will be followed by a newspaper article or other feature to introduce the structure. Structures that are too modern for the 1950's start point for Digby will be retained by me and held until the appropriate time.

I will contact the designers of selected structures and give them an opportunity to create some of the story for their building as it relates to Digby, and to provide a name (their own, or another) to be used as a new character in the Digby world. Even better, and headshot of the designer for a newspaper article would be ideal!

Will I Make My Own Structures? - I have to admit I have not yet a go at the BAT myself. Learning GMax, mastering texturing, and learning all of the details that make a SC4 structure a good one, are all things I will try to do in the future. For now, we have a growing selection of new structures to use, and I will start with those.

And so starts an exciting new chapter in the Region of Digby, with the help of our fellow Simtropolites!

My 3rd or 4th post here...I'm anxious to see when your villes become to huge cities! The realism of developing the villes slowly is very good. I hope you keep this CJ alive until you get big cities.

Oh for crying out loud! I just went to Xurros' journal, and it's fine! I don't mind at all. Goodness, I have thicker skin that that!

Leave it to lawyers to stick their nose into things!

Guess I'd better message poor Xurros and put his mind at ease...

    Alrighty then, take care of!

Below is  a copy of what I said to him. This should put those Digby lawyers' minds at ease, too.

(Xurros is from Brazil...seems like a good kid)

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

Xurros, I hope your not taking this seriously.

I am still trying to decide which law firm has the better legal issue.  I think the mad cow exhibit is the key to whole case though.

Entertaining journal.... but... Where are the cities?????

It's a very good journal, but we don't have enough pictures of your cities. I like the little stories. At least, it's not a dull and boring CJ....
