<Ultraviolet123> I have a question

13:08

<WolfgangB> ok

13:10

<Ultraviolet123> Would it be appropriate for a person to grab LinCity's code, modify it to their will, and then release it as their own game?

13:11

<WolfgangB> absolutely not.

<Ultraviolet123> Ok

<Ultraviolet123> What if they gave credit to the authors (berliOS)

13:12

<WolfgangB> no.

<WolfgangB> btw berlios is not the author but the hoster

<Ultraviolet123> oh

13:13

<Ultraviolet123> Who made it

<Ultraviolet123> ?

13:14

<WolfgangB> mainly the people listed in credits

13:15

<Ultraviolet123> ok, thanks

<Ultraviolet123> cheers

Who is WolfgangB and why is he telling him modifying the code of LinCity is illegal? I'm sure Lincity is released under the GPL, giving us the right to freely remake and redistribute the game as we please. 30.gifquote>

He was a channel op in there, and according to the BerliOS site he is a project administrator of Lincity.

Lincity is released under GPL. Here is part of the license:

You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion

of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and

distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1

above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

    a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices

stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.

    b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in

whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any

part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third

parties under the terms of this License.

    c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively

when run, you must cause it, when started running for such

interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an

announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a

notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide

a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under

these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this

License.  (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but

does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on

the Program is not required to print an announcement.)

quote>

Bear in mind I put that portion of the license there just for reference, not to back up any "claim" I may have made. Actually it seems WolfgangB's thoughts on the matter conflict with the license a little bit.quote>

The license states we may edit the code and redistribute it as we please as long as we state we changed the files, we store a log of all edits made to the program (all of them), it is distributed free of charge, we provide the source code, it carries major edits, provide a notice there is no warranty when running, and that we tell the user how to obtain a copy of the GPL. There is one exception... if our program is interactive but doesn't normally provide an announcement about warranties (which this program wouldn't normally provide that announcement), we don't need to print such an announcement. Yes, I read lawyer. XD

EDIT: oh noes! Dreaded page flip bug!

TV-VCR: Thank you for that information. Our rights to re-jig the source code and graphics is maintained with the GPL, so that shouldn't be a problem.

simmaster07: Thank you for your offer. I would be delighted to have you take charge of the site. I could give you a hand, as I am rather experienced with Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. Please post a link as soon as you have it online.

Some of these issues are being ironed out, so it shouldn't be long before we really get started.

I like it, maybe it should use a big city picture from SC4, and I'll be willing to give hosting if needed.

Oh, I double posted since it wasn't showing, and good luck. The only thing I could help with was with hosting and very little with the site.

Well, I've got everything set up. CFFC: You could help me set up and administer the boards. Also, the post wasn't showing up because of the dreaded "page flip bug," when a post spawning a new page causes the new page to dissapear. The bug can be fixed with a new post or editing the post at the top of the new page.

    Current Website Information

Everything is almost done. 9.gif Just a few things:

    * Unless we get permission from dirk to use the Simtropolis name, the project's title will be "ProjectCB (Project CityBuilder)"

    * The forums are empty. Boards are being added.

    * The blog needs an initial post to be made.

    * The bug tracker needs setup.

So far, all the software and all the databases are in place.

simmaster07: Thanks for getting it all set up! Please post the address as soon as it's ready, and I'll modify the original post to add the address. If you want, then I'll write the first blog entry, and if you are looking for administrators for the forum then I'll volunteer.

I've PM'd dirk to see if using the Simtropolis name is OK. I haven't got a reply yet, but fingers-crossed we shouldn't have a problem. If we aren't allowed to use the ST name then I will be open to all suggestions for a new name.

Sounds very interesting. With all the SIM building games out there and of course SC4 being the monopoly, and CITIES XL on the rise of interest. The first thing I would do is make sure yours stands out from the rest. Doesn't simtropolis.com have that name already? "simtropolis? If they support ya...so do I. 4.gif

    Good luck friends. 4.gif

Well, there have been some problems with the site while I was setting it up, but I did it! 4.gif Here are some features I added and some stuff I wasn't able to add:

    What the site has

    • A forum (the only thing not on SourceForge 3.gif)

    • A download area hosted on SourceForge
    • A wiki hosted on SourceForge
    • A repository for developers to upload patched files to hosted on SourceForge
    • A bug tracker hosted on SourceForge
    • An RSS feed hosted on SourceForge
    Stuff I couldn't add

    • A blog (it just wouldn't work 22.gif)
    Anyways, here are the links:

I have just registered on the new forum as "SmartRoss". From here on in the main development centre will be at the new site. I will post back updates here every so often, but, to get the most recent information, you will need to look at the forum.

If you sign up on SourceForge, remember... my screen name there is "ggenius." And when you sign up at SourceForge, you must, MUST, MUST give me your screen name if you want to be a developer. Also note that developers must be registered on the forums.

I don't know much about coding, but I can do graphics. I registered on both ProjectCB and Sourceforge (Both as Adnoxaei), but ProjectCB says:

    "An Error Has Occurred!

The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you. "

http://projectcb.oxyhost.com/forum/index.php?topic=5.0 "Becoming a Developer" is where I'm attempting to get to while logged in. I can see everything just fine when I'm not logged in 15.gif

Since that error is preventing me from posting, I guess I will post my application here on ST.

(Application removed from Simtropolis and placed on projectCB)

    Thank you very much! 9.gif
