You must have a 32 Bit version of Windows XP. It's the 64 Bit version that it won't work with.

The original 1993 release was on floppies. Basically everything was back then. CD-ROMs were still fairly new-fangled technology and many computers still didn't have a CD drive.

The 1995 re-release, "SimCity 2000 Special Edition", was on CD-ROM. Also, it was designed to run in Windows rather than in DOS.

...you know, the original floppies may still be sitting in the basement at my house somewhere. No way I'm finding them at this hour, though, since it's my mom who'd know where they are if they're even still there and she's asleep now....

Nevertheless, a picture of them is on its way tomorrow or maybe Friday if they're still there and we can find them.

Haha, MS-DOS, now that's old school!

I still remember it, and i suppose i am one of those "youngins" from the early 90's(91 to be exact)quote>

You'd be on the very end of the generation that would remember it. Windows 95 eliminated it, after all. No "exit to DOS" or Program manager, just Windows (and the leftover command prompt). Also, Windows 95 was the first version of windows to have a start button.

It was confusing, it really was, it did take some time to learn, but eventually i got it, can' you still use MS-DOS in XP?quote>

Well, that particular screenshot was taken using DOSBox.

And then there's always the command prompt (C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe), which is similar in appearance though not entirely in function to DOS.

For one thing, DOS never allowed any file or folder names longer than 8 characters, nor did it allow spaces in those names ("C:\My Documents"  would show up as "C:\MYDOCU~1>" at a DOS prompt). It also didn't allow file extenstions of more than 3 letters (which is why some really old web pages ended in ".htm" inseat of ".html").

But when SC 4 came out i bought it Illigal and played it for more than a year build city's of 500.000 inhabitats, but that was it. On a verry beautiful day I came across a Free record shop and saw the expention Rush Hour. Bought it right away. My first game I bought Legal. Played it for a long time, but hated those commute times. And THEN i found Simtropolis, since then i play it everyday. Fhank your Simtropolis and nowadays sc4devotion.

I'm with Gary Colligan, started playing Simcity Classic on an Amiga at a friends house, then Civilization I.

First game of Simcity Classic with my friend, we put Firestations nearly everywhere, put one down everytime there was a fire. First game of Civilization I just kept moving the settler around, didn't understand that I had to build a city. When I got cities from goody huts, I put Warriors AROUND the city, not on the same tile...lol..

Moved on to SimTower and SC2000 and Arco's....what good times.....like many good games, they're now lost on some disk somewhere, and I'd probably not be able to play them in Vista anyway....

well sense its been mentioned twice....

Civilization is where i started when it game to the gaming world. which like the sim cities series, is another series i follow closely. for example, had i not got Civ II on release day [which wasn't easy in 1996], i doubt i would of later got SC3K on release day either...

and do we really want nostalgia pictures on the floppy disks?

I started play SimCity 3000 unlimited in 2004 (lol, I didn't know SimCity 4 deluxe came out at the time). Then after three happy years of playing SC3000 unlimited, I discovered about SC4 deluxe. When I first played SC4, it was horrible, I had the updates, but I never knew about any SC4 fan sites. As a result, after deleting over 10 screwed up cities, a person on the SC4 offcial site introduced me to ST. After a few months of happy playing on SC4 deluxe with about 600 MB of plugins, a disaster struck. My laptop's hard drive failed, and I lost all of the SC4 files since I forgot to make back up files.

Now, with my laptop that been upgraded from a 5200 rpm hard drive, to a 7200 rpm, and from a Intel Core duo processor to Intel Core duo 2 T7200 processor; SC4 loads and runs faster now. However SC4 is still slow in two of my largest cities.

I started on Simcity 4. I remember when I was at Walmart, I saw SC3K and SC4 on a shelf. I wasn't sure which one to get. SC4 was more appealing than SC3K so I took it home. I installed it, played for a while and got bored. I found the simcity.com on the URL and typed it into the browser. The first thing I downloaded was the two updates and the BAT (I tought it was required to install custom content), boy what a headache, it took more than two hours to download because I was on Dial Up. The first lot I downloaded was BrendasXne's station. Well anyways, that's a little of my history.

I started with sc3k, played it until sc4 came out, and got that. Then I got bored and stopped for about a year or so, took on lots and lots of running. Then I got 3ds max, and a whole new world opened up... :-p

I started in grade 3 with Sim City 3000 Unlimited, big huge box and all. I spent over $50 on it I know that for sure, but it was worth it. I still think it can be more fun than Sim City 4, plus it's a lot easier as well.

That wasn't about nostalgia, it was about proving to Explodingsims and anyone else who might doubt that yes, SC2K was in fact on floppies originally.

I started way back in Kindergarten or first grade or so on a Mac SE in my school like DanWalker. Man that was pretty old school haha my nuclear power plants always blew up months after I built them...

Then when I was 6 I got SC2K SE for Christmas (1996) and from then on I was a SC fan. It took me a while to understand how to play the game since I was so young, so I just blew up the cities that came with the game. Then I got SC3KU for one of my birthdays... I think it was my 11th in 2001. That one never really had my addicted. Then I was browsing the site sometime in 2003 I think, reading up about SC4, and it was psyching me out it looked so awesome. And so since my... 15th birthday I think, I've been playing Deluxe and it's by far the best SC game out there.

I played SC on a friend's SNES.  But the first version of SimCity I played was for P.C. in my grade school's computer lab in 1990.  Us nerds fought to use one of the school's three or four licenses.  The copy protection code sheet was up on a bulletin board.  For my twelfth birthday, I got a copy, about five months after my first computer.  Eventually got both expansion packs, too.  I loved Ancient Asia and Future Europe.

I remember writing a letter to Maxis, asking if they were going to do a version with 256-color graphics.

My introduction to the gaming world was SimCity on my cousin's SNES. We got our SNES and of course the only game I played was SimCity. I begged and begged my parents to get a computer to play SC2000, but we didn't get a computer until SC3k came out (which I promptly bought). I was able to play SC2K on my friend's computer, so it evened out. I now split my time between Civ4 and SC4, with the occasional NCAA Football game thrown in for variety. I feel old with all these kids who are like, "I started with SimCity 3000 when I was 5!"
