My Sims won't take highway!

Hey guys, I have built a highway for my sims and most of them are not taking it. Instead they are taking the most direct route. For example, my sims will take the road to the next city even when the highway is right beside it! I have NAM installed and working, but it doesn't seem to help....

Destroy a small section of the road. They will then take the freeway.

You can use this trick as well to channel other traffic:
I had a smallish city with only road connections (4 of them) to the neighboring industrial city, and somehow only one of them was always "red", despite being the longer way for half the city - so I cut the most used cross connections to this road, and afterwards 3 of the 4 roads were down to yellowish-green, one still completely green... It affected employment only for a brief period. The road use stayed that way even after I re-built some of the bulldozed cross connections.

You sometimes have to train your Sims to look for new ways!

i use tollbooths to try to redirect some traffic onto alternate routes, it seems to work.

Ok, I took your advice and built a highway with ramp leading to road and residential zone facing the road. I put the time on cheetah and let close to a year pass by and no residential buildings were popping up, meaning the game thinks there is no connection, or whatever the problem may be. What am i doing wrong or what could be the problem?

As you can see i had road connections and even water and the demand was there but it still didn't zone it...maybe there is something i am doing wrong...

From what I can see, you are missing either an on-ramp or an off-ramp (in other words, you've got one of these already, but you're missing the other).

You have no way for them to return from their jobs. You need an off-ramp on the other side of the highway & connect it to the otherside via an overpass.
