Hey, maybe next year's class will ask to get Tasered! Bizarre.

Police Tear-Gas Crowd Near Michigan St.

By TIM MARTIN, AP

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Police used tear gas early Sunday to disperse a massive crowd partying near the Michigan State University campus after fights broke out and officers were pelted with bottles and cans.

Police said in a statement that 3,000 to 4,000 people had gathered for the Cedar Fest party late Saturday. They said 52 people were arrested and 48 others were ticketed for various offenses.

Nearly every officer at the scene reported being struck by a flying object, Police Chief Tom Wibert said at a news conference Sunday. Four small fires were reported, windows were smashed on two police vehicles and several officers and partygoers suffered injuries — mostly cuts and bruises.

"I don't see how we could have dispersed the crowd without tear gas," Wibert said. He said the gas was used as a last resort and officers showed restraint throughout the night.

Authorities said the crowd became increasingly unruly after 1 a.m., and about 80 officers from various jurisdictions worked to contain the crowd.

Wibert said police initially used only loud, smoking munitions rather than tear gas to try to get the crowd to leave, but only about half the people dispersed. Tear gas was fired around 2 a.m.

"I think that there were some who were there because they wanted to be tear-gassed as a rite of passage, so to speak," Wibert said. "After the initial munitions — the flash bangs and the smoke bombs — they were actually chanting for tear gas."

Michigan State student Vanessa Schultz of Macomb County's Clinton Township said she got a whiff of the gas through her apartment window.

"I think everyone's mentality was like, 'We want to get tear-gassed. This is fun,'" said Schultz. She said she stayed inside because it didn't look like fun to her.

"During the day it was all relaxed and fun," Schultz said. "It was kind of a shock when it turned weird. But we all kind of knew what was going to happen once it started."

Police said the majority of Michigan State's 45,000 students stayed away from the gathering and that many of the troublemakers weren't students. Of the 52 people arrested, 28 had been identified as university students.

They could face charges ranging from disorderly conduct to inciting a riot. More charges could be coming after police review videotape.

Students convicted of charges involving riotous behavior could face long-term suspension, as allowed by state law.

Who wakes up and thinks: "hmm, I hope I get teargassed today."? What a bunch of failures.

And that, my friends, is why Michigan State is the number one party school in the world. All others are just posers and amateurs.

Man, I was really hoping to be the first one to say, "DON'T GAS ME, BRO!"

Just because they were chanting for tear gas doesn't necessarily mean they were looking to be gassed. It's possible they were taunting the cops.

I'll remind you that the legendary Boston Massacre happened because the crowd was taunting the British soldiers to fire- and eventually they did, supposedly thinking that one of the voices yelling "fire!" was that of their commanding officer (which of course was not the case).

JanYpe that is completely ridiculous. We are by no means failures.

gas can be used as a verb, like, "the ants were gassed when we fumigated the house" or in a more notorious example, "hitler gassed the jews, gypsies, and gays" so Doxx is not using your language (although my friends and I say "ball me" all the time so you're not alone, maybe it's a northeast thing)

Being tear gassed is quite an experience. They started by throwing flashbangs and smoke bombs at us-but those don't do anything-and a lot of people thought it was tear gas...which we quickly found out it wasn't and so everyone went back to what they were doing. There were just a few people that were yelling that and most people just laughed at them...most of us didn't really want that gas.

That's the fun part about English- flexiblity. You can just take a noun and use it as a verb. And it can become common language. Like "google" meaning to search for something on the internet or "photoshop" meaning to digitally modify a picture. With most any other language you couldn't just do that due to verbs having standard endings. For instance, in Italian, to be a verb, it needs to end in -are, -ere, or -ire. You could conform it to that, but then the conjugations mess with it. A verb "googlere" conjugated regularly would become "googlo", "googli", "google", "googliamo", "googlete", and "googlono"- and that's just in the present tense. There'd be six more forms for past tense, six more for future tense, plus participles and the gerund. In English, "google", "googles", "googling", and "googled" cover any conjugation you could dream of. Our language is quite conducive to making up new words in that way.

All that said, I'm waiting for someone at a forum to say "Don't edit me, bro!" or "Don't ban me, bro!"

Re: language: It seems like I've always heard the phrase using one of the seven deadly words and 'me'. A few years back Brittany Spears sanitized this to "Do me, Baby" (one more time) for all of the world to hear.

Actually, it was "hit me baby, one more time", not "do me". The implied meaning is still the same, though.

Also, about "a few years"... that was nine years ago! 1999 that album came out.

I went to Northern Michigan University.  But for one semester I was at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in Shiga.  The school was run from Michigan State University and the classes were all MSU call numbers, so technically I was a Spartan for about 3 and a half months.

What incompetent fools. Hopefully none of them will ever get elected And if they all end up like that we can always have.... 82 year old Barrack Obama be president... if he doesn't win now, that is.

I laugh at how seriously everyone takes this, especially because I bet none of you know anything about MSU. The best part is that we can throw a 3000+ person party and still be successful grads and be recognized as one of the world's top 100 universities and top 30 public schools in the US. Please stop assuming that we're incompetent fools and failures based on what edited media you've seen.

The competence of a person has nothing to do with his stupidity. However, hiring one that is good on paper and an idiot too, is generally not approved of.

Well seeing as you weren't there and, at best, have only seen edited media, I'm going to have disagree with you. You don't seem to see that it's possible to be very competent, educated, and still go to a rowdy party. This "riot" has been made out to be this catastrophic event-perhaps some people haven't bothered to read the details, or just want to jump to conclusions. Like I said before, I laugh at this because this stuff goes on all the time and for the 95% of people who were there, we're going to go on to be successful grads who aren't idiots and this event will simply be something we laugh about.
