Has anyone played those two games? I saw them on wikipedia. I found them intriguing, any good? I would like to find out more before downloading.

I have Simutrans it is a Transport Network Game, you do not build cities with it, the aim is to transport goods and services from existing cities to cities.

Lincity was an attempt to build something that would work the same as SC4, but for Linux Operating Systems, its slowly getting better, but is not a patch on SC4 as yet

It -can- be... The problem is, it's far more difficult to profit in game than you could expect, especially if you know games like Locomotion or Transport Tycoon. However, that being said, Simutrans is really easy to modd, and the realism is fun, even if the graphics are quite old school. Really, just give it a try and see if you like it. The only reccomendation I have is to use an older version called pak128; then the graphics are bigger and more lush.

Simutrans is lotsa fun, the cool thing is that the game constantly evolves and you can share your input on forums.simutrans.com - and chances are, your wishes might get included!

It is by no means an SC-like game, it is more of a much better TTD (Transport Tycoon Deluxe). The passenger routing mechanism is simply great, and you can have trams - standard! Go for pak96comic for absolutely great graphics on a nickel!

There are new objects constantly being added, so the level of eye candy is increasing. Moreover, the game is extra-light, it could perhaps even run on your calculator if it had a colour display!

@Cathy: What do you mean about an SC4 patch for Lincity?quote>

"its slowly getting better, but is not a patch on SC4 as yet"

its a saying, in other words Lincity is not as good as SC4 yet, but its getting better with each new version 4.gif

Regarding the lame comparison of Sim City 4 to Simutrans:

"Bootlegged? not even close. Looks like we're comparing Apples and Oranges,...again."

from the Simutrans website (where development is ongoing):

"Your goal is to establish a successful transport company. Transport passengers, mail and goods by rail, road, ship and air. Interconnect cities, districts, public buildings, industries and tourist attractions by buiding a transport network you always dreamed of."quote>

In Sim City the goal is to build a successful city.

In Simtrans you choose the vehicles that run on your transport networks,...In Sim City, you do not.

In Simutrans you make money by transporting goods, mail, and passengers,...In Sim City, you do not.

While graphically, Simutrans is a bit more simplistic than Sim City, it can be quite challenging. Also note that there are currently two different versions: Simutrans:Standard and Simutrans:Experimental. Each version has different financial and operational parameters. (see links below for more information)

Simutrans will also look and act different depending on which "pak" set you are using.

Current List of Paksets for Simutrans:Standard (note that some are not finished yet. A detailed list with screenshots and links can be found here ):

Pak64 is the main and a base set for Simutrans developed along with Simutrans executable.

PakGerman evolved from pak64, when original images were replaced by typical German versions.

PakJapan evolved from pak64, after original images were replaced by Japanese versions.

PakHAJO gives the appearance and play-feeling of the long term stable 84.xx versions, which are still around in some distributions. Its appearance is somehow similar to pak64, since historically it shares many buildings. However, certain aspects still tell the 8 Bit heritage.

Abo Set (pakABO) is a 64px tile set inspired by the countries on the Baltic coast.

Pak Contrast is a minimalistic pak set. Its features concentrate on massive passenger networks and urban planning.

PakHD is an art of its own kind - It is completely drawn by hand using pencil and paper.

Pak128-During development people wanted larger graphics. From this the 128x128 set was born. Also it first featured a complex economy and has a really very wide variety of vehicles, buildings or industries. (It contains roughly 7 time more graphics data than pak64 and thus requires by far the largest amounth of RAM and processing power of all Simutrans sets.Currently development is slower on this set, although many people find this their favorite set.)

pak128.Japan-The japanese community has built many great trains for Simutrans. However, it was felt, that the scale of pak128 did not meet the desired level of detail. Thus pak128-Japan was designed. Here the trains are enhanced as compared to the standard size. Also this pak is made more consistently, since it did not incorporated any pak128 objects.

Pak128.Britain was developed to give a specifically British theme to Simutrans, this pakset features a wide range of vehicles (with emphasis on rail vehicles), new and highly detailed stations, as well as more accurate looking track for junctions, and a somewhat more subdued graphical appearance than the brightly coloured Pak128 from which it was originally derived. Still presently in beta (but playable all the same), Pak128.Britain brings a familiar setting to Simutrans for United Kingdom residents.

pak32.comic-Born from some wierd idea to make some comic-style buildings, pak32.comic was concieved. It is there, if there will be ever done a simutrans version for PDAs...

pak96.comic-This pak was inspired by pak32 comic. Its clean and simple style reminds people of model railroading and also keeps the focus more on playing. This pak is under heavy development, although it is already playable.

pak192.comic-This pak is in development. There is only a beta-version, but you are able to play with this graphic set.

PakTTD was created by conversion of Transport Tycoon graphics to Simutrans format. It is nice demonstration of Simutrans possibilities, and it looks sweet. This set is currently not playable. New versions use OpenTT graphics.

pak64Winter-Winter is here! This is a truly winter version of pak64, all pak64 objects are covered by snow. However, since new versions have the season change already incorporated, it is not needed any more.

pakMars-Go where no man has gone before. Bright future and new profits await on Mars. Unfortunately, you must wait, as there is no known playable version.

Simutron-Do you still have a tear in your eye when you hear the word Atari? Well, we have a little remedy for you. SimuTron is designed to remind good old days. This set is more of a demonstration, as there is no known playable version.

Overview of Simutrans-Experimental features: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1959.0

Simutrans-Experimental downloads and links: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1894.0

Simutrans-Experimental can use all of the normal Simutrans-Standard paksets (such as Pak64 and Pak128) without any modification. However, to take advantage of some of some of Simutrans-Experimental's unique features, a pakset made for Simutrans-Experimental is required.quote>

Links to Simutrans-Experimental compatible paksets can be found here: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=2313.0

Still think it's a bootleg of Sim City?

Surprisingly, simutrans can be played on an iPod Touch, though it is very difficult with such small buttons. Anyway, it sounds awesome, I might try it when I can spare the time.

I've got both. Lincity is allright... about as enjoyable to play as Mobility... in that it's nowhere near as good as Simcity. I downloaded it to see what other city simulators were like as Simcity is about the only one i've bought

Simutrans is a good game. I like the style of the music and graphics, and the gameplay has a lot of detail and realism in lots of variables... a bit like Mobility but even more focused on transport. Makes me think they ought to make a city sim (i.e focused like simcity on city management) with a similar style and level of control... i.e for government operated systems etc

I like Simutrans and I use pak128 for my LCD screen. The newest version of LinCity is too difficult for me so I stopped playing it.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I definitely love Simutrans.  Pak128 player here too.

And if it's too hard, that's why you can play as the AI and plop towns and factories, or turn off the budget and play sandbox all from the game menu. It's not so much "cheating" as it is enjoying the game your way.

Never got hooked on LinCity but I'm certain its a fantastic game.
