I'm too scared to go to Melbourne after watching some of that underbelly show... hehe... 3.gifquote>

That show Underbelly was broadcast on WIN in Tasmania and on some days the weather conditions made the channel available in some suburbs on the Bellarine Peninsula in Geelong. I never saw it though. And most people in Victoria have downloaded the series anyway.

I believe that all that crazy mafia business is very quiet in the city and you wouldn't notice anything happening when you are in Melbourne. I reckon the CBD of Melbourne is pretty safe compared to some of the south-eastern suburbs, mainly the Noble Park area.

If you ask anyone in Australia which city is their favourite, more than likely they are going to say their own.

Mine is Geelong!

It's not exactly the biggest city in the world, but I know that it is the best city in the world.

People on here probably haven't heard of the place, I think it's the 12th largest city here in Aus.

Here are some pics to fill you in on what it looks like. I took these myself.

Cunningham Pier, it has a tacky all-you-can-eat restaurant on the end!

DSC00093-1.jpg

You could call this our "skyline".

And one more for good measure. I found this on Wikipedia, so I didn't take it.

This shows our growing suburbs.

Adelaide! Everyone who has ever been here and seen our suburbs and hills just adore the place.

While the CBD itself is obviously not as striking and interesting as the other bigger cities, living in Adelaide has to be the best thing thats ever happened to me.

Just google "Stirling" or "Hahndorf" and you will see what I am talking about. The whole eastern side of the city is just beautiful. None of those horrible dodgy suburbs that exist in outer melbourne and sydney.

It might just be cos I live there but I think it is the best city 3.gif

Beautiful Beaches, Largest Inner City park in the world (bigger than central park in NYC), Beautiful Skyline, Relaxed Lifestyle and Beautiful Weather almost all year.

I agree. Brisbane IS the best city in Australia! I live in Logan, south of Brisbane and absolutely LOVE going into the city, especially at night. Although the river is polluted, the sky is pristine and the skyline is so amazing. I reckon Perth is second and Adelaide is third.

Correction. Perth has the largest single park. The Adelaide Parklands are actually about 3 times bigger than central park combined. It is a sort of "Ring" Of parks around the entire CBD. It seperate the CBD from the suburbs.

The only reason they are counted as being seperate is because they are split up by roads going to the CBD.

I love the riverside parklands! I'm not too fond of Southbank anymore. It's become over-commercialised. I enjoy walking around the valley and the city botanical gardens. The old government house is BEAUTIFUL!

OK, I live in Wollongong - born and bred - but my heart belongs to Sydney. I have seen many of the other cities, and though I may love them for one reason or another, Sydney is the only all-rounder out of them. Melbourne may 'look nice', from a distance, but it is so awkwardly laid out and planned, and it doesn't take advantage of its place on the bay at all. Brisbane is clean, I guess, but it doesn't feel 'lived in'. And what is the go with the branding of 'Brisvegas'??? The city lacks originality and direction. Perth may have the climate and skyline, but it is too far away from everywhere else and remains fairly cemented in the past. Adelaide is beautiful and I could walk around it for a couple of hours. Which I have. But that's about it - I had nowhere else to go after that as I'd already been to the surrounding villages of Hahndorf etc. Darwin is like a tropical version of Wollongong and so it doesn't rate at all. Hobart - well, cute little town, but hey, on the city stakes it doesn't cut it. I won't mention the capital for obvious reasons. So Sydney it is. Skyline, harbour, life, vitality, and most of all, personality.

We get the BrisVegas from the city's awesome club-style/pub-style nightlife. People here LOVE to socialise where ever possible. Plus the Casino is in the heart of the city in the old Treasury building (GREAT BUILDING FOR YOU BAT SPECIALISTS).

Ugh I love the Aussie V8's! I just wish they'd show them more often on the SPEED channel in America. They have way too much NASCAR and amateur drag racing (Pinks). Was much better when it was Speedvision before FOX bought it.

It has the simplest layout of all Australian cities (bar maybe Canberra): Ever heard of the Hoddle Grid? And just about every road is aligned to either a north-south or east-west axis. This means it was the easiest city to retain their tram system. Sydney's was all over the place, those inner suburbs are, well, just wacko.

Not to say I don't like Sydney, I really do. But come and live down here for a year and see how come it is the best city to live in. Sydney is starting to crumble on its foundations...

A lot of what you said I do agree with, bar Adelaide; They don't give a crap whether they're a big city or not, they just relax and live in a beautiful place.

Haha, you can't beat that good old Sydney-Melbourne rivalry... Have a look at this page: It's bananas!

I have to say Melbourne. But (and I may be biased) but in 10-15 years Brisbane will be for sure. It was the fastestt growing city in Australia until Perth took over, but SE Queensland (Gold Coast included) is the fastest growing region in Australia. Brisbane has some air pollution at times (I cant remember what the effect is called) but the great dividing range traps a lot of the pollution during some whether conditions. Brisbane is changing so rapidly, even compared to what it was like 10 years ago it has come along way. Because Brisbane is growing so rapidly many say it will become bigger than Melbourne I think by 2020. The culture of Brisbane is also rapidly changing.

BTW who is in favour of making more Australian BATS and LOTS? I requested a guy make an aussie police car but I would like to see more!

Brisbane won't overtake Melbourne in population even at its current rate.

Melbourne's already 2 million people in front of Brisbane and we're forecast to add almost another 2 million by 2030, overtaking Sydney 4.gif as the biggest city in Australia.

However, I'm almost certain Queensland will overtake Victoria in population. With the big Sunshine Coast/Brisbane/Gold Coast conurbation (plus other places 2.gif), Queensland will grow very, very rapidly.

Personally I really really like Darwin. The rural areas supply the best fruit, no water problems and there is heaps to see.

I prefer Sydney's culture to be honest. I won't say its better or worse, but I always felt more at home, even as a 5th Generation Irish Aussie, in Sydney's middle eastern/meditarranean community as well as the local Pacific Islanders and Indigenous. Not so much Northern Suburbians though.

I've been to Sydney, Gold Coast and Brisbane. I'm also going to be a resident of the Central Coast, NSW in a few weeks, which is a very nice region as well, with a balance of rural/small and medium urban areas. Of those visited Sydney by far was my favourite, it had the most character and you could feel the history of the place, can't forget the views of the harbour and great beaches at Manly, Bondi etc......

I thought quite a few of Brisbane suburbs looked run down, particularly out East until you get to Wynnum, but its CBD is ace and their is plenty to do. Gold Coast looks class and feels like a vibrant, outgoing city but i don't think it is somewhere i would live. Looking forward to going the other capitals as well in time.

Most people say Melbourne is a better city to live in for infastructure etc.... but i think if the state government can sort out Sydneys roads and rail then it could be by far the better city

Australia has some amazing cities! I am a Queensland born and bred but live in England now. I think Sydney used to be the best city in Australia, but until a few years ago Melbourne has just shot up to another extreme. So much new development and also being sporting city of Australia it will become more recognised. Brisbane is a great city near where I used to live. I believe it does have some issues in some areas and looking at Perth now Brisbane needs to spend some money because Perth is becoming the place to live in Australia just look at how many Brits move there a year. I love all Aussie cities and hands on heart they are all better than English cities. Also don't forget places like Cairns, Townsville etc which are some gems of Qld. My rank order for Australian cities then:

1. Sydney; yes still Sydney it still has to be the most visited place in Australia and has such a vibe about like the Sydney Opera house, Bondi Beach get all the celebs

2. Melbourne; The sporting city in Australia also the best place to live in Australia I'd say

3. Brisbane; The capital of Qld I still think should be 3rd and probably in the future Brisbane and Gold Coast will turn into one big city

4. Perth

5. Adelaide

But most of them cities were in the best cities to live in the world in 2010 survey.

So go Aussie cities!

I live in the Dandenong Ranges of Melbourne.

I'd have to say Melbourne's the best!

I hated Sydney, urban nightmare and not all that much to do.

Canberra was nice though. Interesting.

Oakleigh in Melbourne's quite nice, plenty of Greek influence there!
