Okay, I have to make a model of Omaha Beach (one of the areas that Allied troops came ashore on D-Day) for a school project.  I have ideas on everything except how to make the cliffs.

I need the cliff to looks realistic but be made of easily obtained material. There are no rocks in my area to use, and because of recent weather, all the ground is muddy, so that means no dirt.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a realistic cliff?

I have used to thermocol/styrene to create realistic terrains when making architectural models.

The thermocol sheets vary in thickness from 1/4" to 2". You can stick them together to increase the width. Than use sandpaper to give them the shape/form you require. After you've given them the form, you can stick real dust/dirt/sand on them with a standard water based glue.

Or if you really want super realism you can also make the base from gypsum powder or plaster.

If your on a tight budget try foam... it's easy to sculpt, with the right tools...

if you have some spare change i'd recommend going to a model train store, people take that stuff VERY SERIOUSLY! They have great landscape materials
