Tabloid "Journalism"

After seeing the thread which referred back to an article in "The Sun" I felt a sudden, massive rush of anger rise up in me that made me want to clobber the "journalist" who wrote th piece.

I hate the Tabloid Press in the United Kingdom. Why do we need it? We have the amazing BBC/C4 News, the fantastic quality papers, the brilliant Radio 4 and the most average Sky News.

I just want to prove my point here with a few headlines from my least favourite papers the ultra-right-wing Daily Mail and Daily Express.

The Daily Hate Mail is read by the "middle class" and was the only newspaper in the United Kingdom to support Hitler and Oswald Mosely before WWII. It is bordering on facist in many of it's views and yet it is considered mainstream when the more socialist (but equally trashy) Morning Star has an incredibly low readership?

3,115,444 digest this rubbish every day.

What Daily Mail/Express readers care about:

These aren't rare occurences, these headlines have all been since mid-January.

An excessive use of the question mark in headlines so the paper is never wrong

American tabloids tend to just be hilariously dumb and rarely touch on real stories... Now you can argue that FOX news fits this bill ( I certainly would). But tabloids, in the strictest sense, in America are exclusively entertainment based or highly satirical.

FOX news is an interesting case as, just like the Daily Mail, Daily Express, and whatever portray themselves as legitimate news source, its hard to say they are completely without merit. If you read the above headlines as objectively as possible, you might not see the inherent bigotry and racism that many others can see. Although tabloid in nature, they are trying to expose alternate point of views. As much as the BBC is viewed as unbiased, no such thing exists. All journalism and research is analyzed through different paradigms and approaches and these tabloids may be the only venue of alternative points of view. Millions of readers might read that "trash" because they don't share the exact view point of "traditional" news sources.

The immigrant stuff is right. The first thing i did when i came into Britain (i was about four at the time) was immedeitly claim tax benefits. After leading a petion to change Englands name to Arabpolishsomalistan, I attempted to erase Britains culture when i watch a foreign film (American, to be more precise). Due to the fact that all 100 million of us are living on the body of the great British people, we have a lot of time on our hands.

Disclaimer, DO NOT believe the above. I don't wanna cause a flame fight!

Well not all of the British middle-class read the Daily Mail. I certainly don't. Not to sound snobbish but neither due the majority of educated and more informed people.

I also detest and find tabloids vile and incredibly narrow minded and inaccurate. We do have some world class media sources here and those should have much greater prevalence. They exist because some in society want easy dumbed down news they can understand or read articles they believe to be correct. British press has always been geared toward specific groups in society and as long as we have quality media such as the BBC, The Times, The Guardian, The Economist and various others then we shall continue have proper journalism in British society.

What annoys me that people think that the Daily Mail and Express are 'real' newspapers. At least people who 'read' the Sun know they are reading crap.

Britain has some of the best news sources in the world, its such a shame a large number of people choose to get their news from the tabloids.

Just to bring over the list from the Presidential thread on British newspapers:

The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country;

The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country;

The Times is read by people who actually do run the country;

The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country;

The Financial Times is read by people who own the country;

The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country;

And the Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits.

And the Financial Times? "Can't understand it, full of economic theory. Just a part of the uniform"

I'm personally fond of the financial papers, like FT or the WSJ. They're usually more sober in their content, and with the type of readers they have they can't afford headlines like "So-and-so many Poles crossed our borders last year (and we're not even counting those on short-term contracts)", because they know the the causes and effects of the immigration more than the average Sun, Mail or Express reader. Take the "After Manic Monday" headline--do you think the paper are thinking of the well being of the FTSE corporations, or the appealing to the pockets of their readers when they "demand" a .5% interest cut in the UK?

Oh yes, the financial papers are able to cut the celebrity/entertainment crap without losing editorial content to ads too. Quite a feat, right?

Yeah, typical idiot Americans don't give a damn about politics or anything like that. Tabloids here tend to focus on what celebrity is having an affair with who, what they said, what some anonymous person claims to know, etc. This is the staple for things like the National Enquirer or Star Magazine.

And then you have Cosmopolitan, to whom there are only three things in life which mean anything- sex, losing weight, and sex.

I don't know why, but for some reason my dad once brought an issue of Cosmo home from his office waiting room (my mom probably wanted to see something in it), and I flipped though it out of curiosity- and let me tell you, it's absolutely insane some of the stuff that was in there. An article on how to improve your leg health by lying on the floor with your legs raised up against a wall for five minutes a day. Flirting tips. Tips on how to rejuvenate your sex life. This particular issue also had a special feature of some pretty racy pictures of "Joe Millionaire" (remember that stupid show?). Horoscopes and people's "ouch" relationship stories are apparently regular features.

That's some grade A prime tabloid crap right there.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

From the looks of it, it looks like your tabloids actually try and get people to beleive what they write, where as our tabloids are intended to entertain us in the grocery store line.

* The Toronto Sun in Canada modeled itself on the newspaper, including a sunshine girl (who has never been topless). The "Sun" masthead has since spread to many other cities in Canada.

So yes it is 9.gif

We do have Tabloid newspapers here in Norway too, but never in these recent years have i ever seen them bashing immigrants like TDEX and TDM does( that's just ridicolous)... And the more conservative newspapers here aren't exactly that usual either, most of the newspapers here try to avoid being biased against certain groups of people, ages, etc... They do of course have articles of that youth drink more and and smoke more than ever. But i have also seen articles where they also say that we're starting to drink less,and smoke less, so it's not like they are devoted to just find bad things about certain groups.

Most so-called Tabloid papers here only seem to use the Tabloid-layout, but not necesarily the typical Tabloid right-wing mumbo jumbo...

Some of the major newspapers here used to be a bit right wing, but they slowly got rid of that in the 80's.

Here's some of Norway's largest newspapers( some are only in Norwegian)

Tabloid is all the journalism Britain really has... BBC do give quality news so that is an exception.

Confused is right, American news rarely touches on real stories ( i am talking about Fox News basically)

Tabloid journalism is here to stay, it's the Murdoch Empire, he isn't going to be defeated, and i should know, my local newspaper is where he started his Empire.

aaahhhhhhh no it doesn't.

Lets see...

Well we have

The Times, The Independent, The Economist, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Regional and local newspapers, specialist publications as well as Channel Four news, the BBC in addition to a host of others. Some of which are the oldest print media in the world and highly respected. It would seem you need to become more informed on such issues.

Yeah i wasn't stating a fact, it was just a joke. I didn't mean that there is nothing whatsoever that isn't a tabloid.

I thought there were a few subtle signs of it in my post. Unless you have autism, i would have thought you would understand my post.quote>

How incredibly offensive. Do you even know what Autism is, such a display of immature ignorance.

I do not have autism for that matter and no your previous post did not have subtle signs whatsoever as to the 'joke' you were attempting to make.....

American Tabloids actually do not make any sort of claime they are true... They actually make the opposite.. The small print in the rag makes it clear. LOL

If anybody actually believes any of these rags are true stories before a respectible news organization receives the info?  Then, there are bigger problems than what the rags report.

oh and by the way.. I had to comment on the IDIOT American statement >>>>>  HOW NICE

even sadder I saw a bunch of six grade girls talking about the sex tips they read in cosmo yesterday when i was waiting in the lift lines at nashoba (ski mountain).

but honestly, i would spend 20 bucks on tabloids just to get a good laugh. "Jesus Tells US Troops to Nuke Isreal Or Hitler Will Come Back in the Form of A US President" is just too funny to pass up

I only read Clarksons column in the Sun... I don't even buy the Sun tbh, I usually just pick it up when i'm at my in-laws... bored. Rest of the time, I get the Independent... much more satisfying and less braincell frying to read thats for sure.

There is a good reason why The Guardian is such a good newspaper. The Guardian Media Group is controlled by an organization called the Scott Trust. The Scott Trust is a non-profit organization which was set up to ensure that The Guardian would continue to be independent.

The Trust was created in 1936 to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of the Guardian. Its core purpose is to preserve the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity, while its subsidiary aims are to champion its principles and to promote freedom of the press in the UK and abroad.quote>

From the Guardian Media Group website.

This means The Guardian isn't controlled by share holders and is not at risk from a takeover by Murdoch, or any other large Media company.

The only reason why I like tabloids is that they are nice and small and compact and can be easily managed and read. Unlike broadsheets newspapers, which I have to have a boxing match with to get it to behave and be nice and flat and small and easy to read. The Guardian is nice because its in berlinier format, which is sorta inbetween the two.
