Um...Ok? Tell me of a decent TV that's make in North America.

Edit: looking at Belfastuniguy's post I agree that it's a waste of bandwidth...

Wow you guys are seirously screwed up, I'm not telling you to buy a TV i'm telling you to pay off a debt or buy something made in America because of our economy doing very bad the only thing it would do is maybe get you something nice and you just helped our economy in a small way.

sharp has/had a plant in NJ and texas instruments makes DLP chips for HDTVs in the Dallas area I think. ...Of course actually these plants probably just make the parts, which are assembled into TVs down in Mexico in factories that literally are right next to the border.

just wanted to say that. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Actually, I'm going to leave this thread open for discussion about what people plan to do when they get their tax rebate. The other thread is more about the global economy.

My mom is already deciding what to spend the money on. So far, it appears to pay off bills and tuition

I plan to spend mine when hell freezes over... 22.gif

    ...

And if even if I did get a rebate, I'd put it towards a PS3. You can't expect the majority to spend it the way the Gov wants you to... people will either put it away for a rainy day or treat themselves to that Japanese HDTV. Its like putting a band aid on a Lepper...

Consdiering how few things are actually made in America these days its hard to do that, not that it matters, if you buy anything from an American store the money will help the economy.  It'll be money that'll go into peoples paychecks, it'll pay ulitily bills for the store, and the store can even buy other products to help resupply, which in turn will hopefully bring in the next person with their tax rebate to start the process again.4.gif

So I plan on buying a big screen TV, well, I had planned on it, but we can't get dish network here, or any tv network anymore, so I'm probably going to put it away for college, which would not help the economy, until after it's already been helped.  (If I get a tax rebate)

I'm spending my tax return on...X-box 360...which may requrie the use of a hi-def TV.4.gif

Is this a rebate or another advance?  Back in 2001, they called it a rebate but we had to pay it back the next April, which made it an advance, not a rebate.

As to what I did with it back then, I stomped out of the office picnic (no way did I want to have a picnic on Sept 13, 2001) and went to spend my "rebate" on relief supplies for the Pentagon rescue workers.

As to what I'll do with it this time . . . I'm thinking of getting a new kitchen floor.  I don't want to spend forever doing it myself so I'll put the money towards hiring some nice people to do it for me.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

what's wrong with helping out another countires economy, and why was there an anti-china movement?  China produces many great goods (which a few of happened to have big problems with) but is that a reason to hate china?  A car can crash and kill people, is that a reason to hate a car?  No.  It's completely illogical and ludicrous.

Buying in America does help out our economy.  You're buying, doing a financial transaction.  Is that not helping out our economy?

It's good to pay off a mortgage and stuff like that, it's good to pay off debts, but it's good to also have pleasure in life.   A perfect man is like a robot.  The robot will choose the best choice that ensures it's ability to work and it won't choose the choice that will give pleasure for something that it deserved.  That's a perfect machine and we're not perfect machines, we're human.

So it' good to pay debts, but it's also good to enjoy life as well.

In short, I completely disagree with your statement.

(and this argument is not a waste of bandwidth, saying that it's a waste of bandwidth is a tiny waste of bandwidth... as is this statement)

but of course if I did get tax rebates I would use it to pay off debts, then I would use it buy a hd tv built and shipped from china that was them sold by a vendor in America, helping otu both economies.

Not that we have much choice where our goods come from.

There are basically three types of national economies. And of course, most national economies have combinations of these three.

    1) Development economies: These economies develop and innovate new goods and services. (Like Japan and the US)

    2) Raw-materials producers: These economies produce the raw materials by which goods are made. (Like Canada)

    3) Manufacturers: These economies take the innovations and raw materials and make goods out of them. (China and India)

Again, most countries aren't just one. The US produces a lot of raw materials and manufactures products as well.

So, you buy a new HDTV from an American store, designed in Japan, produced in China, with raw materials from Canada. There ya go, four economies supported.

"Buy American" is a massive oversimplification of the globalized world.

Well, even China is becoming like America in the innovative sector. I've seen projections on several websites (one called, nextbigfuture.com aka advanced nanotechnology in my sig) where China surpasses America in the technological innovation area by 2015 or even sooner.

Most people don't like the competition there is between China, India, America, etc., but I actually think it's excellent. Competition has proven to be a great economic and technological stimulis.

As for the actual topic, my dad says he's going to use the tax rebate (or "advance" as Meg said) on college for me. Nice. 9.gif

I couldn't agree more. Also,  put your money into an Roth IRA! If you're about 20 years old and start saving now, you'll be a millionaire about time you'll retire. 2.gif
