Goths to be banned from UK shopping Mall

I'm not afraid to say it. It's pretty obvious that this kind of thing is even worse in the US. Here a mall that gets a large number of poor minority shoppers loses business from white people and business drops. Malls like these get sick and die, meaning less sales tax revenue for muncipalities suffering from white flight. In the end what you get is suburban decay.

@Hamster - The centre didn't ban an ethnic minority, the overwhelming majority of Goths are white as well as being well educated and coming from middle-class white homes.

I think the UK Emo phase is over, my girlfriend tells me they've all become part of a 'Scene Kids' subculture now... worse hair, worse dress sense... all the kids are wearing odd socks, its a parents worst nightmare.

Still, no reason to ban them from shops for wearing mismatching attire.

Just since so much of this hinges on what is public and private space here's an interesting tidbit. I was just talking to my girl friend (law student) and this would be unlikely to hold up in Canada. Canadian law has concluded that you can't extend a general invite to the public and then selectively discriminate. If challenged this wouldn't hold up here. The mall would have to close its doors to walk-ins and extend specific invitations. Now what would happen in the UK where there isn't a constitutional charter I don't know.

You have to wonder what kind of research went into this decision, usually i take the prevalence of goths in an area to be indicative of a wealthy middle class and a generally safer and more pleasant area. This is really just a matter of someone not liking the way they look.

It may also be down to certain religious beliefs too... I mean, obviously Goth = Satanist in the eyes of the ignorant, they drink blood, write depressing poetry and glorify death... imo, only the stupid Goths rely on sterotyping to determine what they do and how they act... the majority of them are humourous, well educated and have vast aspirations as far as their life is concerned... they don't sit in a dark room, filled with black candles, crying along to Baroque classics...  thats a negative stereotype that totally warps how people view them in society.

Trust Canada to get it right!  That's exactly what I meant by the law defining public space by use rather than ownership.  If you inviite the public, you don't get to pick and choose!

In the UK someone would have to challenge them under the European Human Rights Act in order to clarify the conflicting laws governing property rights and human rights in this case.  

As they're victimising a bunch of teenagers that's not exactly likely to happen.

But yeah, this is, of course, an issue of attacking the concrete visible scapegoat as opposed to the abstract invisible problem. Because that's the easy way out, and it makes it look like you're doing something so it helps you get re-elected, even though in the end it solves nothing. People tend to be simple minded and look for obvious causes and solutions. The trouble, of course, is that reality is rarely that simple and actually doing something meaningful therefore means thinking outside the box and doing something which doesn't have a clear obvious effect, and thus seems to be doing nothing, even though it's doing more than any simpler obvious "solution" ever will.

But hey, if your engine was leaking funny stuff and discoloring your car would you solve it by giving the car a new coat of paint? Hopefully not, but societal issues unfortunately tend to get dealt with in a manner not unlike this.

Correct, Shopping Malls are deemed private spaces not public therefore I can see how they can pass such a policy - even though it is shameful.
