Okay, you only need to say it once. Thrice is too many times.

And judging from the fact that you went straight from Traveller to Dweller, I think it's safe to assume Local Yokel is gone, too.

Anyway, here's the list with approximate numbers in it:

1) Just Arrived (1) {added early 2005}

2) Stranger (2) {added 2004}

3) Passerby (10)

4) Squatter (25)

5) Sightseer (60) {was "Tourist" before March 2008)

6) Travelller (90) {was "Local Yokel" before March 2008}

7) Dweller (140)

8) Resident  (220)

9) Commoner (340)

10) Citizen (450)

11) Suburbanite (510) {added summer/fall 2003}

12) Urbanite (650)

13) City Slicker (790)

14) Statesman (940)

15) Mogul (1050) {added 2005}

16) Loyalist (1200)

17) Musketeer (1270) {added March 2008}

18) Patriot (1350)

19) Cavalier (1450) {added March 2008}

20) Veteran (1610)

21) Dignitary (1890)

22) Local Legend (2010) {added fall 2003}

23) Local Hero (2100) {added fall 2003}

24) Suburban Legend (2220) {added fall 2003}

25) Suburban Hero (2350) {added fall 2003}

26) Urban Legend (2400)

27) Hometown Hero (2800) {added fall 2003}

28) Celebrity (3000) {added spring 2004}

29) Simtropolis Geek (3200) {added spring 2004}

30) Simtrop Enthusiast (4000) {added 2004}

31) Simtrop Devotee (5000) {added ???}

32) Simtrop Fanatic (7000) {added ???}

33) Simtrop Addict (9000) {added ???}

34) Simtrop Aficionado (11000) {added ???}

35) Simtrop Zealot (13000) {added ???}

36) Simtrop Junkie (18000) {added ???}

37) Simtrop Connoisseur (25000) {added ???}

a) Some Random Label (random)  {added late 2005/early 2006}

b) Label Out to Lunch (random) {added March 2008}

Hmm, but if you look at the last post I made, I was a dignitary before I hit 1890.

By the way, this IS post 1890 for me.   Ironic, eh?

And that is why "approximate" is the important qualifier. Notice that I'm only reporting nice round numbers. Most of the transitions do not occur at nice round numbers. And the numbers that they do occur at shift slightly. So reporting precise values is impossible since they aren't static. Unless new ranks are added, however, the numbers do stay approximately the same.  Hence, approximate values are practical to report.

Anyways, when I hit 1888 posts, I became a dignitary. What's up with that?

-Why couldn't it be a nice round number like 2000?quote>

No that would be too obvious... if everyone knew their rank was going to change at a nice round number then that would deprive the ST Post Rank Fairy their greatest reward... fun.

BTW not many people may know this but the ST Post Rank Fairy is a distant relative of  Puck from Shakespare's  Mid Summernights Dream...  does this now explain the situation any better?

That depends on whether or not it's actually a label or just an error message. I went and checked, he's a Statesman now, but considering that image is 9 days old and he's made over 70 posts since then, if it was a random label it would be long gone anyway. So it's impossible to say either way at this point.

I do know, however, that it is possible for labels do display error messages like that, I've seen it happen before. For instance, a PM I once received included a copy/paste of the text that appears next to my posts, but instead of "Mega Fan" my label said "CML error 102". I suspect this occurred because something about sending a PM with it messed it up by changing the location in which the system searched for the label text to the incorrect one.

So it is plausible that some bug caused the system to fail to locate that guy's label when you viewed that page and thus displayed a 404 message in its stead. Of course, considering how common 404 errors are in internet pop culture, it's also very plausible that a label might be made to purposefully say that.

So, unless an admin can confirm it either way, we really can't be certain which it is.

DukeEdit: well, as luck would have it, we now have significant evidence suggesting that "Label error 404" is in fact a label and not an error message. Why? Well, I posted, and all of a sudden I had it:

(link to image)

I went and looked in a different thread... and I still had it.

I went and used a different browser... and I still had it.

I made another post.... and it went away.

While this doesn't eliminate the possibility of it being an error message (posting could be how the error is fixed), it is similar behavior to other random labels- so it does look to be that way.

I would suggest anyone else who sees it on themselves to do what I did- don't make any more posts just yet. Find another existing post of yours and see if it's there. Use a different browser and see if it's still there. If you can, use a different computer and/or a different internet connection and see if it's still there. If doing one of these things makes it go away, we know it's an error message. If posting is all that ever makes it go away... well, than it looks like it's a valid rank but we still can't conclusively say that. Meaning if it is a valid rank, we won't know for sure without admin confirmation... which I get the feeling we're unlikely to get.

You can also try this if you see it on someone else, but pay attention to their post count. If they post while you're looking around, the test gets messed up since that variable wasn't controlled.

Duke87 You know how you said that Tourist is retired. Well, I saw someone with Tourist, on a thread. STILL

How do you change from something retired to the new rank?

Take a screenshot next time, so we can actually see it.

You didn't do that, so... who was it and where was it? Because that's important. Ranks cannot update between posts, they can only change when you make a post. So someone who had Tourist and has not posted since it was replaced would still have it. A more extreme example if this issue is that anyone who has not posted since the upgrade to ST 5.0 (April 2006) has "Junior Member" as their rank. This is because the forum software was switched, and thus everyone ended up with the new software's default rank (Junior Member) when the info was transferred. ST's ranks were reinstated, but one needed to post before their proper rank would return.

Just answered that. Make a post. The rank won't update otherwise.

Okay, but who is "that person"? It doesn't help to just say "I saw this", that claim needs to be verified before it can be accepted.

    No fooling eh?  I'm still a statesmen and have exactly 1100 posts, although I suppose, that is about to go up *crosses fingers*

    Any new evidence on that Label Error 404 rank (?) for that matter?49.gif

    As has been said before, the admins like to mess with the settings for this. First, it keeps things interesting. Second, it helps prevent spam posting, which people generally don't like seeing.
