Welcome to page three.

I'm only 14. But if I was 21, I would definitely vote for Colbert. It would be awesome if he ran with John Stewart. Colbert/Stewert If he ends up not running, I would vote for Obama. They are both honest guys and have no ties to oil. They also aren't the stupidest, most insulting, most pitiful candidates ever! Unfortunatley, Barrack won't win because he is black, and Steve won't win because no one will take him seriously. I wouldn't mind a woman for president, but the only woman running is Hillary Clinton. :-( :-(

Colbert is very liberal - he is essentially playing a character he originated on The Daily Show which mirrors his own life (number of brothers and sisters, where he grew up, etc.) - but has an almost completely opposite political ideology.

Colbert has gone on record saying he has nothing against Republicans - just many Republican agendas.

The way he has been able to play the character for so long and make many (MANY!) people ask this very question is a huge testament to his abilities.

Just one more point on whether to vote or not:

In the United States do you have the option to formally refuse a ballot?  We do, and you have to make a statutory declaration to that effect at the polling station if you do.  In fact, you must say "I refuse this ballot" as the opening round in the protocol.

I reckon the US doesn't do this because I've never heard of it.

Would you mind letting us all know what that means and what the purpose of it is?

It is a little known item in the Elections Act.  In fact, I am not sure it is there anymore, but I haven't heard anything to the contrary.  When you refuse a ballot, you complete an affidavit stating your objections to it.  It is the only way I know of voting for "None of the Above".  In the case of a Referendum, it would be saying that the proposition was senseless to you.

I have an uneasy feeling that the republicans are going to pull this one off. Has anyone heard the old saying that trying to get democrats to agree with each other is like trying to herd cats? I think if the democrats don't get rid of either hillary or obama, we'll have a another 1912 bull-mose/republican ticket split... and another republican will win. Maybe I'm just pessimistic. I think those who want change will vote democratic, but I don't think that number is large enough to overcome those who've been die-hard hawks all these years. I think anyone with a fair amount of logic sees Iraq is a long term committment.

As for Colbert becoming president... I don't think people who believe in that happening are looking deeply enough into what it takes to win a presiential election. I've read a lot of posts on this thread about how "smart" he is. If that were the only qualification, (which it obviously isn't... look at Bush II) I think there are at least 10,000 university professors who would make you a better president. Do you really want a presidency run like Colbert runs his television show? honestly. We only know Colbert the satirist. I am not saying that an alternative to two parties is a negative thing. Often third parties are formed on a platform of one issue. What would Colbert's issue be? Other than being an alternative for its own sake, but that certainly isn't strong enough. If it is Iraq, pulling out now, in my opinion is a mistake. Colbert will not anything.

Interesting concept, N_O_Body. I've never heard of it either, so I'd say we don't have it here in the states. Exactly what is the point of it? Basically, would you be saying "I came to vote, but all of the candidates stank, so even though I wanted to vote, there wasn't anybody I wanted to vote for?" That's the only way I could think of as how to interpret it.

Does anybody here really think that the U.S. could ever elect someone who didn't have access to huge amounts of money and who wasn't a member of one of the two major parties? I ask this in all seriousness. I suppose that if by some miracle the majority (or even a large minority) of the registered voters actually got up off their asses and voted that might actually skew the results from the predictions, but I still don't think it would matter. Sadly, I think we're doomed to having to put up with one puppet or another from the two parties, at least during my lifetime.

That is why it is known that politicion are liars... its not necessarily their fault.. its human nature. Let's say Joe Shmoe had enough, and went with the "if you want something done right, do it yourself". so he runs for congressman. He wins, and now suddenly he had publicity, he has attention, and he has money, nad realizes that he doesn't want to lost that, so what happens? He go with his "fello congressmen" and forgets about his original platform.

That is why as much as I want him to win, its not like Steven Colbert will actually become president. It's more simple that you all make it out to be: Steven is running in the state of SOUTH CAROLINA! Which is only 1/50 of the United States. It wouldn't matter if he won by 51% or 99%, he will not make much of an impact if he stays in South Carolina. He needs, if anything, the top 11 states, California, Florida, Ohio, Texas, New York, Pennyslvania, etc.. the states that actually dictate who is going to become president.

Who was the republican who said that he would bomb Mecca if there was an attack on US soil? I can see a republican winning. I'm sure that Britain and America's 'special relationship' will deteriorate faster if a republican who has a thirst for war with Iran wins.

US News is reporting that Colbert is now filing to run as a Democrat, not Republican (due to the Republican party demanding a $35,000 fee to join the registra).

It looks like he really is serious on this. Unfortunately, his capaign could backfire, and might draw votes away from the 'real' Democrat canditates.

Well, whoever he is, he must like the idea of World War III.  An attack on the Holy of Holies would be about equivalent to a full scale nuclear strike on Washington, D.C.  If he is in the presidential race, he sure wouldn't get the vote of any of the American people who are against war, I hope.

well, you guys, the democratic committee of whatever decided Colbert isn't serious, hence, he is not going to be on the ballot.
