It's in the town of Chernobyl, near the plant. It's a monument to the firemen who gave their lives. Here's a better shot:

Here's the one at Mitino:

Yes, i've seen that before. Even up to the mid 1990's the Scientests who worked at Chernobyl wore nothing but a jump suit and a cotton wool face mask and a gieger counter... no hazmat suits, no Gas masks, nothing. The most hazardous place after the Chernobyl explosion was the roof where alot of the debris lay, so they employed guys known as 'Roof Runners' to go out for 20 seconds at a time and shovel as much radioactive debris they could back into the core before running back to be decontaminated. It was certainly a mess.

I heard a massive lump of the Sarcophogus fell into the reactor just a few days ago.. not that it makes any difference... Chernobyl's Core is so scantily clad its basically doing a striptease. Not that that matters either since most of the radioactive material is underneath the core in neat glassy stalactite formations.

I think they plan to seal up the thing in some kind of dome? Its also interesting that they operated the other reactors there until the late 90s....idiots I say.

Yeah actually. After reading pnorrell's post I spent all of drafting class reading about the disaster. You're right El Burro, it is weak, but a collapsing shelter is very dangerous. It has already filled with rain water which is now some of the most highly radioactive waste on the planet, and a collapsed shelter also is prone to raising another dust cloud laced with radioactive particles to be scattered across Europe. Since this is actually such a threat, Yoman3 is right; a french firm has been hired to create a massive metal dome to enclose the entire dying shelter.

Not really, there would have been massive power outages in Ukraine otherwise.

    Also

On 17 September 2007 it was announced that a new steel containment structure would be built to replace the aging and hastily built sarcophagus that currently protects reactor core #4. The project, financed by an international fund managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, will be designed and built by the French-led consortium Novarka, which includes the companies Bouygues and Vinci. Novarka will build a giant arch-shaped structure out of steel, 190 m wide and 200 m long to cover the old crumbling concrete dome that is currently in use.

It is expected to take a year to design the new building and another two years to build it. The steel casing project is expected to cost $1.4 bn (£700 m). A separate deal has also been made with the U.S. firm Holtec to build a storage facility within the exclusion zone for nuclear waste which has been produced by Chernobyl.

    Looking good so far.

It seems like your rails on the top are too big overall.  Because of the natural thickness of the walls, and the general planeness of the facade, it is hard to get a good sense of scale from it, but a good sense of scale can be given through the railings.  The sizing of the other rails looks good.

Also, you could probably give all of your textures a sharpen filter in Photoshop.

I made the rails smaller but I wasn't sure how much sharpening I should be doing on the textures so I left them as is. I also resized the stairs on both the Reactor and the outer-wall and added a bunch of other stuff -

Also... too far, or not far enough? 3.gif I'll probably render a few versions in the end to add some diversity -

Its just straight render colour... I didn't texture it although I should really. I might darken down one of my crumbly paint textures.

Hmm... it would probably lose about 95% of its detail but I could give it a shot 3.gif

btw... better, or do I need to turn down the volume on the crumbliness? -

Lenin vechna zhivoy! Atlichna, tovarish! Looks very realistic. Why would anyone want a new-looking version? Where's the fun in that?

Looking great here burro! Just one thing, maybe add 1-2 more levels on the Steam Tower? Seems a bit short, it might just be the fact that we're looking at it from the air, and I'm so used to seeing it from the ground.

    Thanks guys

@ Mightygoose - Yes, i'm going to render one without the Lenin Mural. Also going to render one without the steam tower

@Yoman - I'll see what I can do. Also, i'm being demanded by Glenni to fix the window textures so it appears i'm not totally finished yet.

I'm also planning on a little bit of ground clutter around the plant... some planters near the front door with dead stuff in it, pipes, bits of masonary etc.

    nice.  Propoganda. 5.gif

I've heard many stories about russian propoganda, especially in the stalin time period.  It was tot he point where they had in a year many many kilograms of newspaper and only a few rools of toilet paper in the stores.  Often people used the newspaper instead, but if it had a picture of stalin it was the end for you. 31.gif

I've rendered 3 versions today, i'm in the midst of looking at them in Lot Editor to see if their looking alright.

So far... 2 of the Models didn't render properly which is severely annoying 45.gif

Annoyances aside, after this I'm going to the stuff here thats outlines in red -

    pahpahpah.jpg

No. 3 is a water inlet pump house by the looks of things, the other 2 however, i'm not entirely sure what they do. I'm going to do those 3 buildings before I release it.

Hey El Burro, what happened to all the BATS you made in the first page? They look real good!

And about that Chernobyl power plant, it looks great!

I never released them... either because they were un-finished or not up to my standards... if i'm not going to use something because its terrible then I highly doubt others will use them. 2.gif

Although, there are things i'm willing to go back to and fix for an upload like the Library.

I just remembered the TV tower I did however not that long ago, i'd totally forgot about it (since when I rendered it last time it was alot smaller than I'd envisioned). I may render that again... an upload however, hmm... we'll see.

Speaking of a structure that has to be unbuilt in a communist country, how about the undisputed king of the failures of design-on-the-cheap? The infamous Ryungayng Hotel (probably spelled it wrong) in Pyongyang, North Korea! At least Chernobyl wasn't some high-rise monstrosity smack dab in the middle of the capital that people had to look at every day. 3.gif

The Ryugyong would have been nice had it been finished... many people believe that what you see right now is it basically finished, all it needs is windows. Not the case however, it was to be encased in Sapphire blue glass... i've been tempted to BAT it but i've been told Paulvmontfort has beaten me to it (which is a good job because would have made a mess of it 3.gif ) and its practically done. If it makes the game is another question but the renders are amazing... I would post them but I don't know if Paul would like his unfinished models being gawped at without prior consent 2.gif

If it isn't released though, you can guarentee that i'll give it a shot.

What's your point? 3.gif  Adding glass to a building doesn't save its skin.  Even with blue glass it would still be a monstrosity.  Just the shape is unbearably ugly.  It looks like a big cartoon mountain.
