The DeLorean is making a comeback in 2008

Good news for wealthy, impractical Back to the Future fans: the DeLorean is making a comeback. With manufacturing beginning at the end of this year, the DeLorean should be for sale in the first quarter of next year for a projected price of $57,500.

As cool as this is, you've gotta wonder if there's any way buying a new DeLorean could not be disappointing. After all, there's no flux capacitor, no Mr. Fusion, and no ability to fly. It's just a car from a sweet movie that's just as impractical as it was 25 years ago. But hey, you can't help loving some things, can you? We'll see if we suddenly see an influx of DeLoreans on the road come next summer. — Adam Frucci

This is awesome! I've always wanted a DeLorean, and now I can get one! I can't believe they're bringing these back. Being such a die-hard BTTF fan I watch all three movies at least once a month, this is big news for me. Anyone else think these cars deserve this almighty comeback? Yes, no, maybe so?

Ooh, awesome! I heard they were considering making the DeLorean come back, but didn't know it was confirmed. I'd love to have one, but I wonder how many they're going to be producing for 2008. I don't think these will be as big of a hit as the "originals", because the originals were built/sold when the movie came out.

I remember seeing on craigslist a few months ago that someone wanted to trade their DeLorean for a boat (either a speedboat or a small yacht), so that tells you how much these things cost.

^ Actually, the last DeLorean was built in 1982, three years before BttF came out, so there was no chance to capitalize on the unintentional marketing from the movie. So these new DeLoreans might do okay, if purely for the nostalgia factor, and if they don't make too many of them.

I could have sworn that some company had bought all of the unused parts back in the 80's early 90's and has been building and repairing them for awhile. But still It would be sweet to have been old enough to only pay 12,000 for one when they were new!

Yeah, I though there was already a DeLorean factory in Houston? I think I heard it on a G4 show showcasing the evolution of technology (game systems, telephones, automobiles, etc.)...it might've been Discovery Channel. If I'm not mistaken, you could order a new DeLorean built from refurbished parts for around $25,000, and a brand new DeLorean from brand new parts for $40,000. I remember it because I was shocked that the factory was in Houston (which at the time was the closest large city to me)...thought that was awesome!

Actually, under $60k is far cheaper than what I thought they would sell for if they ever were re-introduced. Are they still gonna be made of stainless steel? And I, too, thought that all of the existing parts were bought up by someone awhile back.

I always thought they were kinda cool cars. They definitely have a unique striking look that I never really fully appreciated until I saw them on the road as opposed to in pictures. Like the Avanti, it's a one of a kind car that wouldn't be mistaken for anything else.

According to what was in my newspaper, they will be making two brand new vehicles a year. Thta's why the price is so high.

There is no De Lorean factory anywhere in the world, they were always built in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I'm not sure where these new ones will be manufactured though.

If I understand the articles I've read about this correctly, they are basically original DeLoreans. Somebody bought all the remaining, unused parts and is assembling them.

They're being made from leftover parts from the manufacturing facility by a group in Houston, Texas.

My dad heard about this guy who runs a DeLorean exclusive repair shop in Houston, Texas. He bought all of their old parts after the company went under. He now realized he had enough parts to make about 5000-6000 DeLoreans. 4.gif
