SWFC (Shanghai World Finance Center) in Shanghai (no surprise there) went in smoke yesterday afternoon:

The fire has broke our in the one of the elevator shafts located in the two massive concrete pillars at the corners of the building leading all the way to the top. According to officials in SH the fire started on 4oth floor with smoke pouring from the top (at about 90th floor).

During fire glazing of the shaft (panoramic elevators taking people to observation deck should be installed there) has been broken in places almost throughout the entire height of the shaft.

Construction works were suspended, but already today had resumed.
No deaths or injuries were caused by yesterday accident (caused by welding works). It took about 1 hour to subdue the flames…

And here is a link to video showing the fire:

Actually if that would be steel structure it would have been much more dangerous! The safety here is due to the fact that those massive corner columns housing elevators are made from very heavilly reinforced concrete of more than a meter thick!

Wow, thats Crazy. That just adds one more thing to China's recent problems, also including the bridge collapse in Nanjing (Similar to the one in Minneapolis, except, like the SWFC, was under construction), the massive toy recall, falling stock markets, and speculations that Beijing's poor air quality could impact the athletes during the 2008 Summer games. I really do hope they recover from all of this soon!

    LOLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ha ha ha.

The WTC completely would've stayed standing...there was something more going on.

ANYWAY!!! (AVOIDING ANY FURTHER TALK OF CONSPIRACY!!!!!!!)41.gif

When the SWFC is completed it's going to be so kick ass looking.

I remember first reading something about that like...seems like 8 years ago.

Yea, I know, the core should've stayed standing from the impact zones down though. But yea. I understand all the engineering behind it but I just personally believe that those buildings wouldn't have collapsed, especially after being in them, and seeing just how big they really are. I guess maybe is that I still can't believe they are gone.

I love the Jin Mao building. It's so freaking cool. The way it was designed. It just looks, so cool.

lol... I want to know how the fire started. That would suck if that building fell though. How come the building next to it looks taller, isnt this suppose to be the worlds new tallest building?

tohokingdom: The reason why the WTC planes collapsed is because they had a lot of fuel in the planes. Had they drained the fire out, they would be standing.

I guess I just have a hard time realizing that they are gone, because they were so massive. I know that they would have collapsed, a structure to have stood up to all that damage and still stand, that would be amazing.

Hopefully something like that never happens again, and hopefully building fires are never as deadly again.
