Jeddah1.jpg

Costing 13.3 billion dollars, Jeddah is being proposed by Prince Al-Waleed of Saudi Arabia. If built, it will indeed be the tallest with the Burj Dubai hidden in its shadows (Figuratively). This is literally a mile high proposed skyscraper.

Is it real? I say that it's just a vision, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Here's the link from where I found it.

reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright's mile high tower proposed in the midst of Chicago's early days of skyscrapers. That too is still a vision, no one is going to build something like that, it makes no sense, unless he wants it for his burial place or tomb or something. 3.gif

You mean this: http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=5138

Interesting, though I can't believe it will ever get built. I wonder if it's even actually possible to build something like this at the moment.

Why on Earth? I mean, they could build more smaller houses to fellow Saudi people and the current reign will overthorwn in some point and this will be left unready or demolished as symbol of western capitalism.

toxicpiano:yes that tower, The Illinois. No one can possibly build that tall in this era of skyscrapers. Very close to it though, but no mile high buildings yet, not until science comes out with another superstrong steel, and new technologies for building buildings like that, mankind just isnt ready for mile high buildings yet, not right now at least 3.gif

If anyone takes a serious look at The Illinois, a mile high skyscraper proposed by Frank Lloyd Wright, they'll see he had a huge number of obstacles to overcome.  This tower CAN be built, but would be massively expensive.  The foundations of The Illinois went down for a half mile, in Saudia Arabia, on the coast, on an island as this tower is depicted, the water table would be so high, the foundation would have to be like a silo to keep water out.  Also, The Illinois had 55 double decker elevators and 33 high capacity express elevators that used a LOT of the total space, probably close to 30 or 40 per cent.  If you consider that after that another 10 to 20% of the building area is for unproductive things like people circulation, mechanical, storage area, etc...  that leaves around 40% usable space.  The building would be so inefficient at 40% usable capacity that it would never turn a profit.  The only reason why Burj Dubai was ever realised was because it was part of a massive development that covered its overhead costs.  As a single endeavour, this tower would be forever in debt.

Ifthis was new york, i would understand. in new york, there is no where to build but up. but they have a ton of room to develop. completely uncessary Why would you want to build somthing so tall? my guess is dukes guess. they are trying to compensate for somthing else 3.gif

The thing would need so many elevators, there either wouldnt be much room for anything else, or itd not only be extremely tall, but extremely wide.

It reminds me of the Millenium Tower planned for Tokyo. I'm not sure if it's really going to be built, but it looked better than this one when I saw a cgi of it on tv.

I think what is even more shocking is not the height, but the fact that the estimated price tag is still lower than the big dig in boston 3.gif

It's not unfeasible to build this. It's just uneconomical. I heard somewhere on skyscrapercity that THE ILLINOIS maybe built in 2056, 100 years after it was proposed.

OMG everyone tries to build the biggest building exept the Europeans. Why should I build a 1600 m high tower when I can built 30 100 m towers for the same price. I mean honestly its stupid we could build cheaper buildings with more squaremeters and spend the money we save for third world contries. I

Ohhh boo-hoo hooo third world countries need our money.

I'd rather have more and more supertall building instead, its much more impressive and, as previously said, a symbol of power and success or whatever. You get it.

Europeans in general are wayyyy too left-leaning, of course they don't want tall buildings.

Too left leaning ?

Look at the biggest Companies in the World no one of them have got a giant skyscraper Microsoft,Wal-mart,Nokia,Mercedes Benz,Google e.t.c.

Why do they dont build so high buildings because it is more effective and they save money.

I'm not against Skyscraper in general but it has to fit in the Skyline. And if you have one mile high tower and around this tower only small building it looks weird.

.............google...tower...you say. what in Gods great name would google need a tower, the internet is big enough! But if any place, i think needs to build tall, its Tokyo. Why didnt i say New York, or Hong kong??Well we all know that New york and Hong Kong have there places in hieght and yes are always booming with people. But Tokyo's huge population needs bigger things. It lacks air and big space, they have barely built passed 1000 ft. You would think that they would have the tallest in the world already. But all they do is propose and propose and propose and propose! One X-SEED after another! Just build it already!! As for the Middle-East! They get on my nerves with this new wanting to build up, they havent even built out yet3.gif! They are new to this and [..and nothing 2.gif ] and to the people of the Middle-East, im glad that they are taking this approach, but they are taking it way way way too quickly!

Toyko is really limited to building up manman99. It's buildings are at very high risks for earthquakes. It is extremely costly to build earth quake proof builds that are over 1000 feet. Which is kinda ironic because it has the highest population and needs to grow up the most.

Yeah, Tokyo is a Mid-rise built up city. Kinda like Buenos Aires.
