Run a river around the west-northwest side of the downtown area. Also, add maybe 1-2 more skyscrapers and several midrises. Put a real highway running near the downtown that doesn't terminate, but continues to serve the other side of the city. Make it sunken and use some walls to beatify it. Place a highrise mall near downtown (yes they do exist, part of the building is a mall while the rest is reserved for other things such as office space).

    Vote:

There is currently a vote going on. Ending August 6th or 7th!

    here.

    Schedule:

I am going on vacation Aug. 1 - Aug. 6 so there will be no updates till then. I'm hoping to make the current poll final when I get back, so if you haven't voted already please do so. August will be a pretty busy month for me with my vacation, going back to school, and whatnot. As a consequence of this there may be only a few updates in August. Don't be upset though; this CJ will still be active with discussions of future planning and some major voting as well as a couple minor updates.

The next poll will be about the placement of the body of water (so far it looks like there will be a river or canal), so you don't want to miss that. When that poll is over then I hope to post a major update with the water and completed downtown and adjacent areas. Stay tuned.

    Replies:

Cobhris96: Your vote for a river has been counted. Please remember to come back when the new poll is started to officially vote on the placement of the river (or whatever kind of water). As for the highway I have received a couple requests to not use the Maxis highways, so I am currently using the Rural Highway Mod, but I will probably switch to one way roads in the future. I am also waiting for the water before I expand the highway and rail systems as well as some major downtown expansion. 9.gif This major update will probably come in a month or so.

cleaner475: The people have spoken! None of those needles will be added to the city! Thanks for your input.

i'd vote for a mixture. the river should follow the green line from north and the, after a curve, it should follow the yellow line to west

How about a river that goes around two sides of the downtown, it gives the city a bit more historical realism becasue rivers were used as defensive sites and often went around two sides.

    here.

I changed the picture and added counted votes. Hopefully the picture is clear and not too cluttered. If anyone wants to change their vote, just say so.

    Replies:

feliwi: I added an orange route, and your vote has been cast for it.

2nerdy4u: I added an orange route, and your vote has been cast for it.

jrhnemo: Your vote has been cast for the green route. This is just a rough approximation of the river's placement. It will look a lot better in game 1.gif.

Shingure: Two more options have been added.

cleaner475: Thanks for your vote. This is just a rough approximation of the river's placement. It will not be this straight in game.

GingerBlockey: Is the cyan route good?

Either the orange or the cyan.  They both look good, but I think the cyan looks a bit more realistic.

I don't know if this has already been suggested, but if it has I'm sorry for bringing it up again.  When the poll is finished and you create a river, I think you should use seawalls to give it a nice urban look.  For example "JS Seawalls" by JayStimson.  I use this and another set in my cities, but I can't seem to find the other set on STEX.  It was probably taken down when it was upgraded. If anyone knows the name of it or where to find it, it uses the same tiles as the sandstone pedestrian NAM tiles.  I think it was by Jeronij, but I didn't hapeen to find it.

*edit:  I figured out what it is.  It's the Marrast Emb Set.

slam465: I counted your vote as half for orange and half for cyan. The lines are just supposed to show the general direction of the rivers. The orange river, if it wins the vote, will not be perfectly curved like in the diagram. Also, thanks for the suggestion about the sea walls.

Ye, the orange is good. However, maybe you can increase the slope of that river a bit in the west side, so that the downtown would appear more concentrated and realistic.

sunrise: I counted your vote, but im not sure what you mean by increase the slope of the river on the west side. Do you think I should make it curve more to the north or curve less and head more to the south?

cleaner475: Here's a small update to tide you over 2.gif

    Update 8.5

I didn't have time to do a full update for today, so I started working on the river and I made a riverfront park between Downtown and the river. I think it's turning out well so far. What do you guys think?

Here is a picture of the increased parking for the baseball stadium. You can also see a construction site in this screen.

    Update 9

I know I promised a major update this month, but somethings keep coming up. So, I decided to split this one big update into a few average sized updates such as this one. In this update I have pretty much completed Downtown. All there is left to do is surround it with a mixture of midrise offices and apartments.

    Plans

Here is an overview of what has been completed in the city. In this picture I have outlined where different types of buildings should surround downtown. These are the areas that I plan to focus the next couple of updates. I am open to any and all suggestions. Sorry for the quality of the pic. Next time I put text on an image I will use the GIMP instead of MS Paint which seems to make all text in a JPEG blurry. Here's what the images says:

    Top left corner:

Also on the to do list for the next couple of updates:

    1. Extend the highway system

    2. Extend the river across the entire map (right now there is a river only near downtown)

    3. [you] Suggest something?

    Across the river from downtown:

    Deluxe apartments in the sky

    Between the highway and rail:

Midrises and one or two highrises.

    By the stadium:

Midrises and one or two highrises. [Also I have a *****in' American Football stadium which I'm thinking will look good here.]

I think you are going to need more than one or two highrises here and there  to complete the downtown.  Otherwise, it's like having a couple blocks of large buildings rather than a downtown.  ......Think NYC.
