How can you make ploppable residential buildings?

About ploppable residential; I've noticed they work only and ONLY if, they're plopped in a residential zone. When I plop a residential building in a residential zone, commute time is always medium and everything's fine. Now, should I plop outside a residential zone, even if it's surrounded by tens upon thousands of commercial office skyscrapers, it will always say "abandoned due to commute time" and commute: "long".

Yoshiisland: umm thats really interesting, i think i did it one time and it worked, i must try it again.

You can make a plop residential the same way you would do to a commercial or residential. Check out how to make a functional landmark from the Omnibus.

Hi, all,

Yes, I have used the BuildingPlop cheat and plopped a residential.  I usually plop it over an existing one that has grown.  Some of them show a no car zot immediately, some never do.  On these, the query shows good stats, and doesn't say that the lot is abandoned.  But if I use the transit query, I've never had one show any commuters.  They don't ever seem to abandon, but with no commuters I assume the lot is just eye candy and doesn't add to tax revenue or population.  Therefore, I don't think a person would want a lot of these.  If I am wrong, please correct me.

Have fun.

PS, I have a question on making a functional landmark.  I know with commercial and industry you can add jobs, but for residential, how would you make it functional?

@Livin in Sim: You're right about the communter thingy - a ploppable residential doesn't generate commuters, and even if it might be able to generate revenues from taxes, it's more or less an eye-candy building that isn't really functional. And, to answer your question, a "functional landmark" is the same as a ploppable RCI building after all, so you can't make a residential one. Some people might refer to a "functional landmark" as one that provides civic jobs instead of C or I jobs, but obviously, there are no "civic residents".

They also add to your population. One thing I'd like to add though; I think you need the population to support these types of buildings. Much like their growable counterparts, ploppable high-density condos and apartments need a minimum of 30,000 people to funcition, form what I've seen in my last city.

Hi, again,

Thanks for your answers, Andreas and Yoshiisland.  Yes, that is good reasoning that even if plopped residentials don't have commuters, if they increase population, AFAIK, tax revenue is based on that, so they aren't completely useless.  I guess we could think of them as "retired" or "working from home" but still being functional members of the community.  3.gif  I have only tried it with low-density if I wanted a building that I couldn't get to grow after trying everything.  Oddly enough, I've had some grow then, like it woke them up or something.  It is a good point about high-density being more likely to abandon, just as grown buildings are prone to if they grow prematurely.

Bye for now.

Would you share it with me?  I am very interested in whether you actually got it working.  If you have it will mean an awesome change in the way we can play our game.  You will be praised by all the modding gods before you who have never figured it out and you will be vaulted into the stars.

I guess with the amount of experienced modders here and no visible solution, I guess it must be impossible to make a functioning Residential Plop.

But wondering... is there still official support from EA that they may consider fixing this problem? Or would they be too busy with their latest games?

*sigh* after downloading hundreds of lots, I realise it may all be in vain when the new game is released 15.gif
