Traffic Congestion Questions

Ok I'd like to know how much streets/roads/avenues etc. can hold before you really gotta upgrade em.

This is what I usually do:

- Upgrade streets to roads once they hit 150 commuters

- Upgrade roads to 1 ways at 1500

- Upgrade One Way Roads to avenues at 4000

- Upgrade avenues to extra avenue or highway at 6000

- Highways... i have no clue

Is that right? Or is there other methods?

And do you swap em when they hit dark red on the traffic charts?

Or am i completely wrong and they can all hold for double that amount, lol.

I made a 70,000 peep city yesterday I got about 5 main avenues to the industry and one way roads line everything else except the outer areas. That Ok?

Its got about 15 hirises, the tallest being O'hare Apartments.

Thanks when you answer!

i usually start watching when they hit yellow and start swapping when they hit orange. i usually have it planned what areas should need upgrades, so room is often left for a local road to become an avenue or if i think an avenue will eventually need to be a highway, i go ahead and leave right of way for the highway (i usually do this in the form of making the median of the avenue 4 tiles wide since i tend to use frontage roads...occasionally i'll miss calculate and have to acquire right of way...leads to a cool looking transit map, but it can ruin the look of a city. i try to avoid making avenues into highways except where planned though. if i start running into avenues turning red, i start using mass transit (the road top mod) so it doesnt change the look of the city. i also usually plan right of way for mass transit (mainly light rail in the form of GLR or elevated rail.)

kk thx. lol i guess i took it too far... heh, when theres 1500 cars going down a road it goes dark red O_o.

Still, I reckon it'd be hard to make a city changing the traffic when they hit orange... even when i wait til red my avenues are everywhere.

However, i should probabaly use 6x6 squares. I usually use 4x4 squares so when you avenue it it turns into 2x2 squares lol. also i can't use modds or any downloads because when i click download my PC refuses to do anything. thx for answering anyways.

I use one way roads a lot too...they work really well. Also, I like to lay one way roads alongside my avenues and only major roads intersect the inner lanes, that way you basically have a local/express configuration for your arterials.

    here's the basics,

    Roads-1000cars

    Streets-100

    Avenue-5000

Highway-8000 these are both ways combined

    I think that's right

Hello, i have a few traffic related questions too...

I have the NAM installed, is there a way that i can check the settings? I think I installed an "to easy" NAM because i have a 150k city now in a region of 500k and no traffic problems ( Only a few subways that are only orange.).  My region is based on traffic ( most income is on toll and traffic income, not taxes...).

I read that a lot of people say that subways are only for short distance traffic, but my experience is that it is even better than monorail. What is the bad thing with subways?

My main city has a lot of financial problems due to traffic volume fluctuations.  In month 1 my city has 100000 people using a car and in the next month there are only 10000! Most times it will get normal again in a few month\years, but what is it?

    (other question...)

I have a lot of black buildings, but they have allmost all services they could wish... What is the problem? How can i solve this? Do I have to bulldoze them? I did not had this with previous regions i played....

    thanks.

(great site! I really love it for years... 4.gif )

when in doubt of the nam just uninstall it and reinstall the nam and when installing check the settings

the other question there is nothing wrong with subways i use them all the time i don't know were u heard that but subways are pretty good at all traffic situations. i use them to back up my aveune when they get conjested

this one is harder to explain i think it is ur roads get conjested so the sims switch to public transit but that get conjested leaveing roads empty then the sims switch back to cars

last question qwery the black buldings see what they want though it is nost likely long commute times it happens way too much in simcity

I bulldozed all the road connections that connects the commercial area to the residental area to end the out of control road traffic, traffic noise and pollution, commute time, and to get the dumb sims to use the giant rarely used subway system. It did solve the problems but, I starved the commercial buildings of customers. As a result, some of the commercial buildings became black.

with me, i've had a lot of trouble controlling my traffic. i have the NAM. i just started making a new city. It's got about 31000 residents. I have about 3 avenues running entire lengths of the map. when i zone areas, i'll usually leave 3-4 spaces empty between the zoning and the nearest avenue. if u use one-ways strategically, you can use those to move traffic from your zoned areas to your avenues. I've noticed this makes a big difference on traffic congestion on avenues and highways. also, there's cool new ways to make onramps/offramps that you can adjust to meet your traffic needs. rather than the single lane onramps/offramps that come default on the game.

make sure you have plenty of schools.  there are a few other necessities that you need.  But no residents are going to move in without guaruntee of a good education, for all ages.  Also, you won't get any commercial demand if you don't have well-educated sims.  if anything, all you'll get are deadend $ jobs.  The more educated your sims are, the more $$ and $$$ business will want to move to your city.

wow am i the only one that BUILDS these roads in the first place with enough capacity. I would hate to have to go back and redo all my roads because I only made them one lane or something.. mostly everywhere in my city is an ave, highway, rh, or two lane oneway road.

wrt "what do I have" go to the NAM folder under the zPLUGINS folder.. you'll find that one of them has a very specific WPathfindingXcapacityYspeedZcommute.. that's what you installed

subways are never overloaded.. even if they turn red.. the STATIONS on the other hand can be

rebuilding never hurts anyone.. in many respects it can be beneficial
