Sacramento v. San Francisco

Okay, Interchange and I have a little debate going, so I started this. I'll compare:

Sacramento:

-Largest almond shelling plant in the world.
-Tree capitol of the world (Tree City).
-It's the reason the West Coast was populated (Gold Rush)
-State Capitol, for pete's sake.
-Lots of nice, clean parks and beautiful neighborhoods.
-Bustling downtown.
-Setting for many Steinbeck novels (general area, at least).

San Francisco:

-Famous for cable cars.
-Second densest city in America.
-World class dining.
-Famous bridges.
-Economic center for NorCal.

What are your opinions? TopCliff

Oh boy, now you've asked for it.

Sacramento

-NOT the tree capitol (woodland takes that title)

-full of slums and ghettos (arden, the lovely place where I lived, marysville, south sac, folsom district, south natomas, etc

-crappy skyline

-overcongested and underpowered freeways

-TWO interstate 80's (you'd be amazed at how hard it was to get my brother on the right one)

-A river that floods each year

I'm sure I'll think of many more by the time this is over...

San Francisco

-Golden Gate Bridge (that alone wins)

-Bay Bridge

-GIANT parks

-baseball and football stadiums

-transamerica pyramid

-tall skyscrapers for a earthquake prone city

-low smog (oh I forgot to add the horrid smog to the sac list)

-better freeways (I think it's better for SF with no freeways at all though)

-the bay

-Mountainous terrain

-fog

-better areas, the only slum areas are Tenderloin, Bayview, Mission, and Hunters Point, that I can think of

-Ferries!

-Alcatraz

-Ghiradelli

-The Presidio

-Fort Mason

-Easy transitable (me and my dad walked from the Ferry Building to Chrissy Field in our attempt to get to the Golden Gate Bridge, but it was too windy and cold

-neat buildings, I mean look at the Financial District, it's full of them

-the EMBARCADERO CENTER.

It looks like a typical American skyline to me. Plus, look at all the trees! The Arbor Day Foundation even proved that it was the tree capitol! We have it plastered on freeway signs and a giant water tower. I'm going to calm down now. You didn't name anything good about Sacramento. I named plenty of good things about SanFran. Plus, the air quality is only bad on really hot summer days. It's beautiful, like today. TopCliff

Air quality was bad each day I lived there, but I really wouldn't know, I was stuck in my apartment.

Compared to SF, that skyline is dreary and dull, and it doesn't have the bay next to it with all the sailboats.

SF also has fisherman's wharf, I forgot to add that in in my last post.

Well, that's before all the cranes and construction started. Anyway, Sacramento has seasons. Winter where it rains a lot and hail storms are somewhat frequent, Spring where the temp and winds keep everything fresh and cool, Summer where it's hot and dry (suck up the heat, guys), and Fall where it's beautiful because all the trees in the tree capitol turn red and it's always the right temp. Bay Area, it's always somewhat nippy and a lot of fog. I'm not dissing the Bay Area. As a matter of fact, I like San Francisco quite a bit. I just think this is a good comparison. Plus, San Francisco really exists because Sacramento exists (Gold Rush, folks). Plus, we have the Big-City feel without the true downsides of said big-cityness. Plus, we have great freeways. Just saying, folks. Leonardo

Actually...it's the other way around...San Francisco existed before Sacramento...

...just a question...why did the capitol even move to Sacramento?

I live in Sacramento, I don't really care for it. Too suburban and boring for me.

topcliff...I think it is a known fact that SF is better...should we end this thread?

oh...and I forgot...wasn't Steinbeck's novel based upon the Salinas Valley?  From Monterey to the Gabilan mountains...

Since when is Folsom a "slum"? And since when in Marysville part of Sacramento? (also not a "slum", incidentally)

I prefer San Francisco, too. I dislike the summers in Sac, and I like being able to walk around and take trains everywhere in SF. I couldn't care less about skylines, but SF's dense development makes it very walkable and encourages the street life that keeps all the wonderful restaurants and and bars open and buzzing all the time.

The trees in midtown Sac are great though, keep the summers a lot more bearable than the burbs. (which aren't really part of the city anyway) I've lived in both cities, I'm about to move out of Sacramento to either NY or back to SF, where ever my job ends up taking me.  One thing I can say for Sacramento is that I'm renting a very nice 1bd top floor apartment in midtown for $775 a month. I'd have to have a roommate in SF and 12 in Manhattan to maintain that kind of rent. 4.gif

Topcliff-the gold rush may have started in sactown, but SF is more famous for the gold rush. hence the 49ers. which brings me to another point. no football in sactown! therefore SF wins.

If you want to compare two similar cities it should be sacramento and oakland not SF
