We're forgetting that the original seven wonders of the world were so named to increase tourism to them way back in the day. We humans aren't that different now than we were then.

And about the Great Wall being seen from space...that was propaganda made by the Chinese government. There isn't a single building that can be seen from space.

As for me, the list probably won't change how I feel about those monuments. I still really want to see Machu Pichu, The Great Wall, the Taj Mahal, and the Pyramids, couldn't care less about Christ the Redeemer, and I've already been to the Coluseum (which is spectacular).

The funny thing about Petra is that people were mentioning it as a city build into a cliff. I know Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade depicts it as an endless cave, but it's actually just a small room. One small room. It's impressive and beautiful, but carving a room out of a cliff is a wonder? I think people were under the impression that it's an immense sprawling complex when they voted for it.

Well, that's actually a misconception, the Great Wall can't be seen from space, not by the naked eye at least. It's not wide enough for that.

I agree with the Pyramids in Mexico, they are ornate and gorgeous, as for the great wall, it is able to be seen from space, it is not biased things made up by the chinese government, as for Petra, I LOVED IT, I saw an exhibition at the Musée des Civilizations in Hull, best money spent.

The Colloseum, hey what can i say, I love it, love it to bits, I am kinda saddened about the fact that they did not include natural wonders, like Victoria Falls South Africa, Niagra Falls in Canada or any of the beautiful mountain ranges... I prefer the beauty that was instilled by mother nature herself over those that were created by man/woman

Well see I am sorry I just was reading more of the comments, the Jesus Redeemer Statue in Brazil, it just goes down to the thing that it is a hidden aganda in the War against Iraq, in my eyes, yes Jesus may be my saviour, but I mean the statue is cement, I mean why isn't the statue of liberty there?

In the same respect, in Ottawa we have the Rideau Canal, that is a wonder, it is amazing the fact that in the 18/19th centuries, men and women worked their tails off to build this canal, and is still being used to this day... the interlocking locks system that was created was something that was amazing, I am sorry but a statue is just that... return it to the original statue that was there...

Regarding the Great Wall of China:

Astronaut William Pogue thought he had seen it from Skylab but discovered he was actually looking at the Grand Canal of China near Beijing. He spotted the Great Wall with binoculars, but said that "it wasn't visible to the unaided eye." US Senator Jake Garn claimed to be able to see the Great Wall with the naked eye from a space shuttle orbit in the early 1980s, but his claim has been disputed by several US astronauts. Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei said he could not see it at all.

Veteran US astronaut Gene Cernan has stated: "At Earth orbit of 160 kilometers (99 mi) to 320 kilometers (199 mi) high, the Great Wall of China is, indeed, visible to the naked eye." Ed Lu, Expedition 7 Science Officer aboard the International Space Station, adds that, "it's less visible than a lot of other objects. And you have to know where to look."

Neil Armstrong stated about the view from Apollo 11: "I do not believe that, at least with my eyes, there would be any man-made object that I could see. I have not yet found somebody who has told me they've seen the Wall of China from Earth orbit. ... I've asked various people, particularly Shuttle guys, that have been many orbits around China in the daytime, and the ones I've talked to didn't see it." [1]

Leroy Chiao, a Chinese-American astronaut, took a photograph from the International Space Station that shows the wall. It was so indistinct that the photographer was not certain he had actually captured it. Based on the photograph, the state-run China Daily newspaper concluded that the Great Wall can be seen from space with the naked eye, under favorable viewing conditions, if one knows exactly where to look.quote>

A photo tells all. Regardless of how distinct it is, or is not, it can be seen. It doesn't matter what propaganda China releases. My source is Wikipedia, not the best, but good for some things.

To be honest, The Original Seven World Wonders never had a list, they became famous through their own popularity and in hindsight they were refered to as the seven world wonders. It's just a number, but if anyone REALLY wants to know what the true modern seven world wonders are today, you only have to shortlist the top seven most landmarks worldwide.

THAT will give you the most accurate result, than a website poll that can and will allow for some biased voting.

I'm not American, but dare I say that the Statue of Liberty IS the Colossus of Rhodes of today (and am 100% that tourist figures would certainly reflect its position in the top 7).

Petra, nice and all, wonder? Not if you consider tourism (and tourims matters here). It wouldn't make it into the 7

The great wall proabably would make it into the to seven, as would the Colosseum.

I'm only commenting about landmarks that HAVE been listed (not the ones that haven't, such as the Pantheon). So just to reiterate, if anyone has access to landmark tourist data, the top most visited would be the 7 wonders of today.

Lets face it, if a landmark is capable of attracting millions it is a wonder. 2.gif

I think the Pyramids of Giza and Stonhenge should definatly be in there, and take out Christ the Redeemer and the Colloseum. And possibly replace Petra with the Easter Island statues.

They should've kept the old ones though. As the old saying goes, "why fix something that's not broken"

The rest of the old seven wonders?

Apart from The great pyramid, they've long gone.

Now that i think about it

The Empire State Building should be included.

Think about when it was built, 1931 with not a whole lot of modern building tecniques and was pretty much the very 1st Skyscraper

and its still the tallest building in NYC. ( do to that occurance on 9/11/01).

im thinking The Gorges didnt make it since its still not finished

Wonder if they will have a 7 Natural Wonders. GO Grand Canyon ! ! !
