EA divides divisions, The Sims seperate, SC5 unlikely

According to Kotaku, EA has split into four divisions: EA Games, EA Sports, EA Casual Entertainment, and The Sims. So, The Sims is a completely different division. Spore is part of EA Games.

So what is this mean, and why is it here. It means that since The Sims is now another division, they will be only piping out more The Sims titles and spinoffs. ("God only knows what horrors they'll concoct with so much autonomy and power.") Meanwhile, the other part of Maxis we once knew and once loved will be in EA Games. Given that The Sims division will not be making non-The Sims titles, and EA would not put out a Sim title without some sort of integration with The Sims, and the fact that the ashes of Maxis are now firmly cemented in two different parts of EA means that our chances of seeing a Maxis-made SimCity 5 is....

...absolutely zero! Sorry guys.

You have made several leaps in logic there.

However, I will remain on the fence as to weather a "SC5" comes out until SCS is released and sales figures are relized.

Living your logic is beyond seriously flawed. I won't even begin to pick it apart.

Seriously, some of you need to give it a rest.

This will not affect the future of SimCity in any way. Actually, seeing The Sims have its own division is pretty good, I believe. They'll do their thing while the rest of the divisions will work on their own projects. I'm still a Sims fan and having them work only on that one series is probably good for SimCity since there will hopefully be some separation between the franchises.

And SimCity is not going anywhere until Will Wright says so... something EA doesn't have control of... maybe?

What does having the Sims group splitting off from the Spore group have to do with whether a more traditional SimCity eventually arrives? Personally this news thrills me, since the technology from Will Wright and Spore could be used to massive good effect in a SimCity game. Procedurally generated unique buildings and lots? A crew with huge amounts of experience in evolutionary modelling? This is NOT bad news.

From a business stand point, this makes SENSE and I actually do applaud EA for doing this (I don't like EA, but this is one of their smarter decisions I think).

Everyone at EA will still be working together, this just streamlines a process that is bogged down by the 'efficiencies' of EA at the moment. Maybe this will bring about better games (don't hold your breath).

Sports game are approved by the Sports division, makes perfect sense. SimCity 5 will probably come out of EA Games, if it ever comes. My guess is a competitor will come out with a game that would be the replacement for SC5 before EA comes out with one.

I know little of corporate buisness. But the only thing that would kill a SC5, to me, is a rousing success of Societies. If it fails, maybe EA decides to go back to SC's roots. If the response is so-so, maybe EA thinks the city simulation is dead.

This is exactly how I feel.  It's why I wanted to seperate the Simcity name from Societies so EA would get it there is still a Simcity community out there waiting for Simcity 5.

The more I think about it, the more I think SC4 is the last of the Simcities I've been playing for 18 years.  I'm torn between hoping Societies fails miserably and wishing success for Titled Mills.

I suppose the only dencent way to hope is that I'm wrong and Societies will turn out to be everything Simcity wasn't and I'll kick myself for having doubted.

So here's to hoping they get it right, like A+, 100%, 10/10, bullseye, two thumbs up kind of right on Societies so I might find it an acceptable replacement for Simcity.

baertooth, there's a lot of optimism going in your post. LOL. Just to point. Community here, to a reason known only by them, hates SC:S. Oh, well.

I would have to say he cares a great deal about SimCity, seeing as how it was the game that truly launched his name into international fame, and was the first (i think..) truly successful franchise of his. Will Wright had in fact said himself that he saw SimCity 4 hitting a wall with the franchise, and was looking to move things back to its roots. Whether this is what he meant is a question for another day, but I think it's safe to say he still cares about his baby (so to speak 3.gif)

Societies cannot fail, it has a marketing machine behind it. It figures will be in very high and there will be expansion packs and sequels galore.

About EA corporate divisions, who cares? I don't see the connection and aside from SC4 I don't I even play any other EA games.

This could actually be a good thing. Now that sims has been cut off and thrown out, what's left of maxis may be able to focus more on things like simcity, that is if EA doesn't pour all their money into spore. Oh well.

Except they also announced SimCity Societies is to come under this new "The Sims" label/umbrella/division: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070618/20070618006347.html?.v=1

"The Sims - Led by Label President Nancy Smith. This team created the model on which the new organization is built. Upcoming releases include: MySims for the Wii and Nintendo DS, SimCity Societies, and The Sims Castaway Stories and many more."

So I don't see why SimCity 5 (if there will be one) will be part of EA Games and not The Sims.

The point that is really being made here is: No more Maxis. Which means no more Maxis-made simcities. Which, judging by SCS, means no more good simcities. Personally I hope SCS is a Windows ME-scale flop. *Insert expletive-filled sentance aimed at Electronic bleepholes here*
