I really like your progress on this building, that new roof texture really looks good.

The only concern I have about the nitelights is how this:

    scottysnitelightstt0.jpg

will actually look on a lot, as it seems as if it will be abruptly cutting off the light effect you've used here where it can't carry over onto the ground.  Nothing major, just something to look at.

Everything else about the nitelights looks great.

Wow, the day render looks absolutely superb now!

However, I'm not sure about the night lights. Office towers are not hotel towers, where you have lots of individual rooms with single windows that are either lit or not. In office towers, you have larger office spaces spanning multiple window panes, hence the lit areas would tend to be horizontal bars of adjacent windows instead of randomly scattered individual window panes, as would be the case with a hotel tower. How exactly is this building used? Even if it is a hotel, though, I think the rooms would be wide enough to span 2 window panes.

The same goes for the lobby, only in vertical terms as well: I can imagine that the lobby has higher ceilings and hardly any dividing walls or floors in it so that its light could probably be seen through the lowest 2 or 3 rows of windows. Of course I don't know the real-life building, so I can only speculate.

The following pic is probably not from that building, but it illustrates what I mean:

    http://home.flash.net/~ral1/starbucks/bigimages/DSCN2884.htm

Anyway, superb progress on that building - and it would look great as CO$$, which would be perfect, because that category is sorely underrepresented. Good luck finishing this beauty! 4.gif

I am going to give you some advice....the same I gave CDI you might try it. But you want to save as a new version before doing this.

Since you are making an office building, they do not have separate rooms like this residential does. Ungroup all the windows. So instead of randomly assign nightwindows instead I would collapse a window into a mesh and attach either the entire floor or half of the floor of windows.

    like thus

    CCCCCCCDDDDDDD

    EEEEEEEEEGGGGGGG

    HHHHHHHHUUUUUUUU

    YYYYYYYYYRRRRRRRR

    OOOOOOONNNNNNNN

I made a crappy ascii schematic above to show you what I mean. Be sure when collapsing to select keep IDs, you may want to save before you do this. This way it will keep the current texture and not change all the textures on that floor. After all your floors are done apply the random night window tool - or simple assign them yourself with the proper prefix.

    hope that makes sense!

Another trick that helps is a night map with some variation in brightness in it. The night maps used by the NDEX teams are a good example. They help to create a look that simulates some offices being completely lit, while others only have some elementary lighting left on for the night - maybe the cleaning team is working there overnight? 2.gif

Colour (or brightness) variations over one set of windows can look as if one or two places were fully lit and the light would shine into the rest of the open office floor, which is not fully lit itself... that kind of stuff.

I'm glad to hear you're on the job already, and given the skills you've shown so far, I don't have the slightest doubt that this will end up as a ~95% rated BAT on the STEX. 4.gif

the lights look better but i feel like there isnt enough glow of the lights illuminating the walls; it seems like there is just white squares where there is light.

    everything else rocks 4.gif

i think you need to ask yourself whether you want lots of nightlights which could make them look overdone or less nightlights which would make it look average but not stand out compared to other BATs

its a great tower though well done and it does look cool at night!

I think you got the window textures about right with your final attempt. You could only make the pattern a tad less repetitive. Having strips of several windows lit at a time to simulate office use doesn't mean these strips can't overlap.

You made the pattern a bit like this (O=dark, X=lit):

    OOOXXXOOO

    XXXOOOXXX

    XXXXXXOOO

    OOOXXXOOO

Why don't you try something like this:

    OOOOXXXXO

    XXXXXXXOO
    OOXXXOOOO

    OOOOOOXXX

I hope I managed to explain what I mean...

As for the spots, the effect itself is rather cool, but the way it is put into practice now, it just doesn't look logical, especially in the angle between that X-shape on the roof and the rooftop itself. The roof is pitch black, and those walls are glaring white. In order to make this effect work better, I think it would be worth a shot tuning it down considerably to make it very subtle. That might sound paradoxical at first, but I can imagine that it might help.

All in all, it's great to see how much effort you put into this and how you don't just say "Bleh, I've had enough" and upload something that's only 80% of what you can do. Thanks for your patience and dedication, and all the best of luck adding the final touches and adjustments to this one! 4.gif I'll be sticking around... 2.gif

Ohhhh!!! That looks really good...hrmmm in fact could you... Well its definetly releasable at this point. If this was my BAT I would release this now, but I am very very very impatient.

One thing you can do, the target lights you are using to light up the building, take the light and move it to z-70 and y-50, and the north light z-70 y50..and then the east light z-70 x50....etc. Also change the color from white to a creme color, to give it that street ambience thing. But this is definetly ready for release imho.

Well, sam_lawrence has made the Auckland Skytower, and there was also a modern library by him that might have been BATted based on a real one in NZ. But yeah, other than that, NZ is not really well represented so far.
